Title: What Materazzi really said.
Post by: Nem on July 10, 2006, 10:36:19 PM
After yesterdays incident, a couple of comments have really got me annoyed - Zidane's a mug, Zidane is a thug etc...

This is what really happened:

Zidane's Mother is seriously ill and was taken to hospital last week. Materazzi said to Zidane "I hope your mother dies of a painful death". This was 20 seconds after he grabbed Zidanes nipple and twisted it.

I feel Zidane's actions were justified, and I, like most people, would have done exactly the same as Zidane did to Materazzi.

edit: I'm quoting a BBC lip reader.

I would have done the same, but you can never justify it! especially as its the world cup final with millions watching, he's mean't to be a pro footballer, you got to deal with things like that!

Appauling by materazzi,  I would of knocked the bastards head off!!

But to defend my comment "Zidane..what a mug"  there was no way I thought someone would say something so spitefull as this,  new he had said something but At the time never had that info so I retract and change to "Zidane..why didnt he break his neck!!!!"

How do you know this?
What did the saudi arabian chap say to him during the 1998 world cup?
Or the guy from Hamburg he nutted during the champions league in 2001?

footballers get abuse like that all the time on the pitch, you got to be professional about it...... as difficult as it may be.

Why you would never be a proffesional footballer!

Its disgracefull if true, i cant see it as true given the Italian team was isolated from evreyon outside due to the scandal so they would have had no knowledge about Zidane's mother.

Even so, he is a pro, and supposed to be a grownup. Hitting someone is just plain wrong.

Just wondering where you heard this?  From all reports I've heard it was definitely a comment about his mum but rather along the lines of shes a whore or something racial and that the Italians did not know she was ill.  Therefore the reaction was understandable to us now but not to him at the time.

Although I'm not condoning any abuse there's a big difference between shouting "I had your mum last night" like a teenage school boy would and "I hope your mother dies of a painful death" when he knows shes in hospital.

I really hope that isn't true, if it is it is one of the most disgusting things I've ever heard.

This is the version i believe.....

Zidane: Oi, pack it in!
Materazzi: Shut it you bald twat.
Zidane: Please be quiet.
Materazzi: Grow some hair you frog.
[Zidane turns around and headbutts Materazzi in the chest]

What a great role model, resolving situations with violence.

I thought the event was a very poor advert for sport. It was played with a complete lack of sportsmanship with players acting, diving and looking for fouls at every opportunity. I have lost count how many times I have seen players beat an opponent and then look for contact to earn a free kick. These actions are now seen as part of the game which is sad. The refs were so unpredictable and seemed scared to do anything wrong that everytime a player went to ground they gave a free kick.

As for the final, I think the comp got what it deserved, a goal from a penalty earned by a dive and the player that should be the most disgraced player in the comp was actually named player of the tournament. I know the vote was reached before the final but for me the irony summed up my disappointment.

I think Graham Taylor summed it up brilliantly:

"how can they name the player of the tournament before the final?, you couldn't make it up!"

exactly!!!!!

some things are bigger than football.

I knew this would happen, thered be a knee jerk reaction to zidanes actions, then once materazzis words were identified he'd be the one correctly vilified and zidane would go on to cement his place in footballing history as one of the best players in the modern game.

hes departure an unfortunate side affect of the scum element thats taken over the game.

theres no bigger occasion in football and for a veteran of the game to act like that in those circumstances it was obvious that what was said could only be something very very naughty.

I was just happy to see a continental footballer act like a man on the pitch for once, shame it was only on the chest.
