Title: Scottish Travellers Post by: lazaroonie on July 12, 2006, 12:34:29 AM Inspired by the arrival of Mad Marty's crew at Cincinnati's in a old beatup minibus, I am just wanting to gauge public opinion on those of us travelling from the West of Scotland , about hiring a similar mode of transport.
i havent a clue on costs at the moment, but if you are interested, post on this thread so we can get an idea of numbers. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 12, 2006, 12:35:06 AM Im in

Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 12, 2006, 12:38:43 AM Me? Your having a girraffe! Nowt wrong with my driving but it would be wrong for me to drive
BTW, approx 300 quid for a 3 day hire of a minibus - could be cheaper, thats just the first place Ive looked at online. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: thetank on July 12, 2006, 12:39:45 AM I hear you make good time on the motorway. ;goodvevil;
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 12, 2006, 12:50:49 AM Pfft that one wanted a min age of 30!

Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Ironside on July 12, 2006, 01:01:58 AM only problem with minibus is 2 people will have to remain sober
i think train would be best option imagine takening over a whole carriage playing the first ever MTT on virgin trains Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 12, 2006, 01:02:55 AM Hey.... theres an idea LOL... go over a bump and watch your stack fall into the person opposites lap :D
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: BigTomatoes on July 12, 2006, 05:03:25 AM im up for the train. i think it would be a better atmosphere if we all had a piss up and a laugh on the way down and it would build up the anticipation of releasing the Scottish beast on Walsall, ( as the Southerners done to us at BB2 ). also the mini bus might be a bit of a pain in the ass to arrange ( more hassle than its worth. ) train for me. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Rod Paradise on July 12, 2006, 11:27:46 AM Minibus is fine with me as well - but I reckon we should leave Friday after work. Friday night in Blackpool anyone? ;goodvevil;
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Eck on July 12, 2006, 11:50:39 AM Can't take it anymore i am off to the acceptance thread to post!!
quite like the train option meself. Now, how do I break the news to her? Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: lazaroonie on July 12, 2006, 03:03:18 PM Minibus is fine with me as well - but I reckon we should leave Friday after work. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Rod Paradise on July 12, 2006, 03:09:17 PM Only thinking about the guys wanting to get a game of football in on Sat am. ;goodvevil;
I'd rather not have as early a start this time. Last time I was knackered and didn't last too well on the Saturday 8) Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: matt674 on July 12, 2006, 03:13:25 PM Last time I was knackered and didn't last too well on the Saturday 8) Nothing to do with the 18 pints of lager and 14 whiskeys whilst playing poker til 4am............... ;goodvevil; Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Rod Paradise on July 12, 2006, 03:16:27 PM Last time I was knackered and didn't last too well on the Saturday 8) Nothing to do with the 18 pints of lager and 14 whiskeys whilst playing poker til 4am............... ;goodvevil; Don't drink whisky (or that foreign stuff whiskey). I was knackered though - had to go to bed after we had breakfast in the Hilton & charged it to Ironside's room before doing a runner in a taxi to our hotel :D Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: BigTomatoes on July 12, 2006, 03:27:31 PM ill be heading down on the friday, either after work or during the day. that way i can make the football on the saturday morning, and go out for a few on the friday night. easier than going down early on the saturday and trying to cram football, poker, drinking in all on the one day. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Newmanseye on July 12, 2006, 06:07:57 PM Train sounds like a grand idea to me, Mind you, I'm up forany mode of transport that allows you to have a laugh.
The only problem I see with the train Idea is my fellow countrymen would have lost their bankrolls to me on the journey down. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: johnlarsson on July 12, 2006, 06:20:34 PM i think train is best option...
leaving Friday or sat is fine by me.... Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 12, 2006, 06:47:29 PM trains a stoopid idea! Means I gotta go up to come down :p
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 12, 2006, 06:57:30 PM Cost of train:
APEX RETURN 46.00 (book 7 days in advance... fixed return date) SUPER ADVANCE RETURN 57.00 SAVER RETURN 88.70 (what you get from the window of the station - return within 1 month) Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 12, 2006, 06:59:29 PM Why the hell is this SOOOO confusing... Ok, returns are normally cheaper BUT when travelling on virgin trains and booking 1 day in advance, you can get a super value single for 18 quid which works out much cheaper.

My plan of action was to head down Friday - Monday! I like Rod's idea of Blackpool on the Friday sounds like a plan. I have checked out train tickets and you can get a single down and a single back up works out a total of £35 thats Glasgow to Brum. May be an idea to maybe appoint a convener for the Scottish blondes and then that way its done and dusted with as little fuss as possible. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: johnlarsson on July 13, 2006, 06:46:26 PM i vote billy or thomas as they are both retired
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on July 13, 2006, 06:48:05 PM You'll need to book those tickets well in advance to take advantage of the reduced prize.
A ticket to brum will be about 70 quid otherwise (each way lol) Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: happybhoy on July 14, 2006, 01:55:18 PM I'm all for a train journey, (bagsy a window seat) have we got an arranger or has it yet to be decided?
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: GlasgowBandit on July 14, 2006, 05:22:11 PM Yet to be decided, I reckon we should get all Scottish acceptances into the CinCin sometime enxt week and discuss best options see what everyone wants to do.
No doubt there will be osme folk wanting to go down Friday, Saturday & Sunday and a few peeps justw anting to go Down Sat up on Sunday! Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: madasahatstand on July 15, 2006, 01:15:10 PM i like the idea of the train with a tourny on the way. blackpool also sounds good but dont know if i have the constitution to go drinking 2 or 3 nights in a row. what time do we need to be at walsall for and ho far away from blackpool is it? maybe a night in birmingham would be more sensible ???
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: johnlarsson on July 15, 2006, 02:00:36 PM ure right.
try and get us all in the club one night that suits the majoruty of us. just for an hour. to discuss anyone u cant make it post there comments here and they will be read out Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: thetank on July 15, 2006, 02:17:50 PM As well as the minutes from the last meeting, the appointment of a Boxmaster General, Deacon Convenor and Master of Trades Hospitals presumably.
I won't be in the congregation, but someone feel free to read this out... "Just buy a bloody ticket, someone call the ball for Chrissakes" ;goodvevil; Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Eck on July 20, 2006, 03:36:49 PM Any updates on methods of travel and when people are intending to depart/return. Want to get something booked fairly soon and would be sound to travel down with some company.
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: madasahatstand on August 17, 2006, 06:15:55 PM eck
i was about to ask the same thing. now the tourny is starting at 4pm, im thinking of going down either the friday night or early sat morning. the train would be best most likely. i think we are going home sunday evening. whats everyone else doing so i know about any hook ups before i book? cheers mad Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Canuck on August 17, 2006, 07:25:32 PM I would like to go but I cant go till Saturday morning or after 5 on the Friday.

Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Karabiner on August 17, 2006, 08:54:52 PM If the Scottish travellers are coming in horse-drawn waggons then I would suggest allowing three weeks.
Just to be on the safe side..... Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on August 17, 2006, 09:09:57 PM Kara you're really not funny ;)
Mad I'm up for minibus idea but I don't want to be a designated driver ;goodvevil; I can leave either on the Friday or the Saturday, I'm easy. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: madasahatstand on August 18, 2006, 07:32:42 PM thats 6
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: madasahatstand on August 18, 2006, 07:43:57 PM if we can get 15 the minibus would be £300 from sat am til monday am. you cant take the bus back after 5.30 so it needs to be mon am. the petrol could be split 15 ways. so maybe at most £40-50 per person return. i dont mind driving there and might consider coming back but i might have a hangover. anyone else want to drive?
so any takers over the 6? Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Ironside on August 19, 2006, 06:26:53 AM surely a train will be cheaper than 40-50 return its only about 60 from here return
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Jinky04 on August 19, 2006, 10:44:26 AM I could do that providing I can sleep in the minibus.
Who says the Scots are tight? :D :D :D Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: madasahatstand on August 25, 2006, 05:25:15 PM thats 7 for the minibus and i dont mind you sleeping in it as long as you clean up after yourself:) maybe my costing of the return trip is wrong. how much u reckon for petrol there and back? id only be driving to glasgow. you can make your own way back from one point.
i looked at trains, which id prefer and couldnt see one less than 78 quid. mad Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Ironside on August 26, 2006, 02:24:22 AM www.travelline.com
you can get a return using apex from £48 or 2 singles from £25 each Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Ironside on August 26, 2006, 02:30:51 AM you can fly to birmingham on the last flight on friday and return midday on monday for £75.98 return including taxes

I'm planning on driving down on Saturday morning from Glasgow. I've space in the car if anyone wants a lift. I've not arranged accommodation either - so if anyone has discovered a good place with rooms still left please let me know. Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: mikkyT on September 06, 2006, 02:44:06 PM Id be grateful of a lift! I aint booked accomodation but I wasnt plannin on sleepin lol
Title: Re: Scottish Travellers Post by: Swordpoker on September 06, 2006, 06:44:08 PM OK Mikky, I'll pm you my phone number.
Yeah, I wondered about not booking a room 'coz we'll be playing poker all night anyway. I'll definitely need a cat nap at least before driving back though. Maybe getting drunk and passing out in a random location is the answer. |
