You have asked the question with the re-raise and got an answer, unless he is a known lunatic I'd be passing, best you can realistically hope for is to be racing with AK

There'd been a lot of loose play on the table beforehand; I think it must have affected my judgement.

Bang on, Royal, and needless to say I didn't hit my two outs.

I felt like a fool and was pretty sure I'd make a wrong move; just checking the experts' views :) Thanks.

It's an akward situation, you have nearly 40bb's, too much to get in pre flop. However you dont want to lose chips as the blind will catch up with you. I would still donk them off if i got an overpair on the flop, i am just avoiding losing them to AK/AQ!

That's the thing; rising blinds and antes were starting to concern me a little. I've had a tendency when in these positions in MTTs previously to get blinded away till my M is <7 and then get involved in crap shoots. I was trying to correct that - chose the wrong hand though!  :(

M<7 doesnt mean a whole lot too me! Diffrent comps require diffrent situations, i cant see how a formula can dictate the correct play!

Still 40 BB is plenty enough, if i had 20 BB i would be looking to get it in.
