Title: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Jim-D on July 18, 2006, 11:09:37 PM I have AOL as my broadband provider but was wondering if it was possible to get on the net using IE without having to sign on via my AOL?
I remember someone saying that they do this a while back but cant recall them saying how. I currently have 2meg wireless broadband (Belkin router) Thanks Jim. Post by: RED-DOG on July 18, 2006, 11:37:16 PM Dunno. I have AOL and I can just use IE without opening AOL or signing in.
My work here is done! Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Lee on July 18, 2006, 11:38:00 PM Jim, i'm sure AOL can be set to use IE. If i remember correctly, its a choice at the start of the installation.
Anyway take a read of this, it is possible: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=165474 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=165474) Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Bongo on July 18, 2006, 11:38:17 PM You probably have to set the internet explorer connection settings up properly - it might not be looking to connect via the router.
Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: mikkyT on July 18, 2006, 11:43:13 PM Your router is not logging in correctly via AOL.
Configure a full access AOL screen name (different from your own). Then set the router to login using that screenname. Voila, internet always on. Theres instructions on the AOL site somewhere. First check what it says under "Tools > Internet Options > Connection settings" in IE. The set up wizard should guide you through - just say you want to connect by LAN Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: mikkyT on July 18, 2006, 11:51:02 PM No no no, AOL has special login protocols!

Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Jim-D on July 18, 2006, 11:58:25 PM It works fine thru AOL,
Im sure that when i set up the router i entered a screen name and password that we dont use. Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: mikkyT on July 19, 2006, 12:02:55 AM One presumes his router is already connected to the net though, hence it working through his AOL browser. No, thats not true. The router makes the physical connection via the ADSL into BT Wholesale. Then is where AOL differs from every other ISP in the country. They have a different protocol which means it is not just sufficient that you specify the VPI, username and password, but the router must comply with the protocol. If it doesnt, then your own PC is responsible for the final connection - hence having to sign in VIA the AOL screenname before surfing will work. yes the physical connection is there, but the connection to the AOL DCHP server and thus the internet, is not. The Router will not have an IP address unless the full aol screenname and password is provided and it has the AOL protocol in it. Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Jim-D on July 19, 2006, 12:06:15 AM Can you load a poker site without logging on to AOL? Not sure mate, Aint tried Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: mikkyT on July 19, 2006, 12:07:49 AM It works fine thru AOL, Im sure that when i set up the router i entered a screen name and password that we dont use. Well if you've done that and the router is compatible then one would presume the connection is being made.... do what RED suggests and test something otehr than a browser... I do wish I had the brain for these things Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: CelticGeezeer on July 19, 2006, 12:21:28 AM My TIP is dont use AOL, they always cause problems.

The Router will not have an IP address unless the full aol screenname and password is provided and it has the AOL protocol in it.So then if he opens AOL and gets on the net fine he should be able to open IE (with AOL still open) and it should work? If not then there would be a problem with the IE settings (bare in mind that most other apps will use the IE settings...) Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: ifm on July 19, 2006, 12:32:39 AM No, anyone with aol can connect thru it and minimise it and use any browser they like
Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: KeithyB on July 19, 2006, 12:43:42 AM Have to agree with Bongo....if you're connected via AOL and open IE which tells you it can't make the connection it sounds like IE settings need to be changed.
The connection IE is looking for is probably the method that you used to use to connect to internet before you had router ( ie dial up or broadband modem connection) Try ......Tools - Internet Options - then "connection" tab. I'd advise having the "never dial a connection" option selected if it isn't already. Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: mikkyT on July 19, 2006, 09:26:42 AM Hes not connected via AOL when hes trying to get the browser to connect. What hes trying to do is get it so that he doesnt have to have the stupid AOL software running on his PC.
If he fires up AOL on the PC, connects, then minimises it, all is fine. But, if he tries to get the router to login to AOL and bypass having the software on the PC, its not working. IE works in the first instance, but not the second (can you confirm this please Jim?). Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: henrik777 on July 19, 2006, 12:29:10 PM Close the aol software.
Right click the aol icon beside your pc clock (bottom right) and select start aol dialler or connect depending on which of the 2 aol icons you use. Once connected use internet explorer. You need to open the software as normal to get the aol content though. Sandy Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Nem on July 19, 2006, 02:57:07 PM Jim,

Post by: matt674 on July 19, 2006, 03:02:34 PM I have an AOL broadband box and a wireless router. I can use Internet Explorer without being connected to AOL and i can open Pokerstars without being connected to either IE or AOL.
To be honest i get disconnected from AOL so many times now that i very rarely use it when browsing internet. Dont know how it all happened, everything just seemed to work when i connected the wireless router! Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: matt674 on July 19, 2006, 04:23:26 PM Throw a banana at it, it will just work :D You will have to explain this concept to me!! If i take the english meaning literally this would involve me having to release my grip on a banana once i have it in my possession? This is something i have never attempted and to be honest have no desire to try. Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Heid on July 19, 2006, 06:07:45 PM OK, what you need to do is this:
In your system tray - bottom right hand side, with the click in it.. there should be a small AOL icon, right click on that. it will bring up some options - one of them should be "Start AOL Dialler" click on this. Type in your screenname and pw in the correct boxes and click connect. Now you SHOULD be connected to the internet VIA AOL without having to log onto the AOL client. PM if you have problems :) Heid Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web? Post by: Jim-D on July 19, 2006, 06:24:11 PM Hes not connected via AOL when hes trying to get the browser to connect. This is exactley what happened. But i managed to get into my router settings and used the advice of setting up another AOL screen name/password, And it is now working great. didnt need to ring support either) :D Again thankyou all very much for your help, You're all stars :)up Title: Re: Using Internet Explorer To Browse Web?
