Title: I remember when .....
Post by: redimp on July 22, 2006, 12:34:29 AM

Just for a minute, forget everything stressful and read this...............

Close your eyes and go back in time...

Before the Internet..

Before semi-automatics, joyriders and crack....

Before SEGA or Super Nintendo...

Way back........

I'm talking about Hide and Seek in the park.

The corner shop.

Hopscotch

Butterscotch.

Skipping.

Handstands.

Football with an old can.

Fingerbob.

Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the Menace.

Roly Poly.

Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams.

The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass.

Bazooka Joe bubble gum.

An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays tune.

Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe Neapolitan or perhaps a screwball.

Watching Saturday morning cartoons, short commercials or the flicks.

Children's Film Foundation, The Double Deckers, Red Hand Gang,

Tomorrow People, Tiswas or Swapshop?, and 'Why Don't You'? - or staying up for Doctor Who.

When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.

Earwigs, wasps, stinging nettles and bee stings.

Sticky fingers.

Playing Marbles. Ball bearings. Big 'uns and Little 'uns. Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, and Zorro. Climbing trees.

Making igloos out of snow banks.

Walking to school, no matter what the weather.

Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.

Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.

Spinning around on roundabouts, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.

Being tired from playing....remember that?

The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.

Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.

Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.

Choppers and Grifters.

Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops. Vimto and Jubbly lollies

Remember when...

There were two types of trainers - girls and boys, and Dunlop Green Flash
The only time you wore them at School was for P.E.
And they were called gym shoes or if you are older - plimsoles

You knew everyone in your street - and so did your parents.
It wasn't odd to have two or three 'best'friends.

You didn't sleep a wink on Christmas Eve.

When nobody owned a pure-bred dog.

When 25p was decent pocket money

Curly Whirlys. Space Dust. Toffo's.

Top Trumps.

When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.

When nearly everyone's mum was at home when the kids got there. When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.

When being sent to the head's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving pupil at home.

Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc.
Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat and some of us are still afraid of them.

Remember when....
Decisions were made by going "Ip, Dip, Dog Sh   t"

"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in Monopoly

The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.

It was unbelievable that 'British Bulldog 123' wasn't an Olympic event.

Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a catapult.

Nobody was prettier than Mum.

Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.

Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin.

Ice cream was considered a basic food group.

Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.

Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you must be as OLD as me

This made me smile I hope it does for a few of you too!!

Shelly xxxx

'It was unbelievable that 'British Bulldog 123' wasn't an Olympic event.'

It was my best chance at olympic glory.

I would have made Great Britain's 'Hot Rice' team as well but Carlos Pannel would have been the star...

I wonder why it was called 'Hot rice?' we used to play it with gravel in a sock (I still have the scars)

I remember a few of the local teenage girls calling round our house & asking if they can take my baby brother (he was 1 or 2 at the time) out round the park, & my mum saying sure keep him for the rest of the day. Trusting times.

Gravel in a sock! We used an old tennis ball.

I remember when we got our very first home phone ... it was red and we shared a line with someone else ..I think it was called a "party line"   i used to love picking it up and listening to the other peoples convo's :)

I still remember the phone number too

 33839

I also remember my dad getting a new car ... well it was new to us ..probably about third hand... A vauxhall Viva.

Running battles with other schools is a memory for me too... Wardown park in Luton was the scene for many a multi school battle... it was like the warriors with everyone meeting up and making their way there.... these were the days when a punch up was just that...  in those days you might come home with a fat lip or a black eye... these days you might just not come home at all...  scary.

A lovely thread, thanks Shelly.

Someone said "remember record players". My Nan had a gramaphone, then we had a "music centre", bloody great thing. Three speeds, 33, 45 & 78. I think "LP's" were played at 33.

Dad had a Motorbike & Sidecar, ex AA.

My first car was a "sit up & beg" Ford Prefect, 97E engine. Cost £45. It got stolen the first day I had it - or so I thought. In fact, I'd parked it on a hill, & forgot to put the handbrake on, & it rolled down a hill & hit another parked car. I reported it stolen to the Police, & they accepted that..... My insurance was £22, Third Party, Fire & Theft.

Happy days.

I didn't have a car until I had been driving for years, but my first motor was an ex gas boad single wheel Transit van. one of the really early ones (1968) It had had more hits than the beatles, you couldn't find a panel without half a dozen dents, but it had a 2ltr V4 engine and it went like shit of a shovel.

My bro Tracy and I bought a Morris 1000 van (ex GPO) as a passion waggon. Who ever pulled first got to use the van. we brush painted it bright yellow. The head gasket was gone and the coolant used to leak through into the exaust ports. at top speed (about 50mph) the cylinder head used to get so hot you could see it glowing in the dark, it used to melt the plug leads. One of the sides had rotted away from the sill at the bottom and used to flap up and down as we drove along. It looked like a giant wounded canary.

Bagpuss....big fat furry catpuss.

The shopkeeper from Mr Benn who must be the most unpopular cartoon character ever as everytime he appeared you knew it was the end.

Bod choosing which milkshake to have.

Floella Benjamin

Brian Cant.

A refresher on the way home from school and if you were lucky an ice pop in the summer.

Jumpers for goalposts and playing til your mum shouted'Tea'

Sitting in the beer garden with all your family and swigging dads beer.

and when flopping the nuts meant you had a a hole in your speedos.

Well here's a few :

1) Getting £1 dinner money - enough for 10 bensons, a box of matches, bag of crisps and a pack of polo's

2) Pipkins - now was tortoise called "Tortoise"?? I can not for the life of me remember!! (The rest are no problem)

3) Sitting with my mum trying to guess the 1 o clock news reader.

4) That spinning horse thing on Anglia TV

5) Being scared of adults

6) Action men

7) Playing soldiers (little plastic soldiers) in the summer, using dry grass for walls etc... and using matches as bombs - great fun!!

8) Bussing to the sea side with £20 and playing Track and Field all day (The ones with the joystick NOT the buttons,, OUCH the blisters!!!!)

9) Christmas as Pontins , year after year!!

10) And that picture of a doll with lots of coloured lines, and an annoying continuous "beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep" when the TV FINISHED!!! lol

Having to get up and press a heavy duty button to turn the TV channel over and there were only 3 to choose from.

Getting a remote control.

Trying to get home from school before my sister to take charge of the remote for the afternoon kids TV.

Commodore 64.  Daly Thompson's Decathon and Football Manager.

Trying to race cars down our street on foot or bike.

Going out when it was hot, because it was hot.  Drinking because we were thirsty, not because the government told us to because it was hot.

27 a side football in the park.

Rugby on gravel tennis courts.

... the one I miss most, Channel 4 racing at my Grans house on Saturday afternoon.

Now that reminds me,,, staying at my nans during the w/e and grandad coming home saturday afternoon from the pub (pissed) sitting in the "front room" and watching Wrestling - Big Daddy, Mick McManners, Giant Haystacks etc....
Then playing "NAP" in the evening for pennies - Now THATS who to blame for my poker addiction?!?! lol

Also, nicking crates of bottles (coke and others) form outside the local pub, the ones with 5p return on them. Then taking them back to the pub the next day to collect the returns money :)

when  Huffy bike was the coolest BMX to be seen on

If you had a motorbike at 8 everyone wanted to be your friend

HI Tec trainers were the shoes to be wearing, particularly if they had a clear bubble in the heel.

You would be confused by the word paedophile

a neighbourhood was just that

Tinkering with the phone and not realising you just cost your Gran a fortune.

Watching the original King Kong with your grandad whilst dunking digestives in to your tea, followed by the James cagney movie that was on that sunday.

Lothing weekend world on a Sunday!!

LOL at weekend world .... I used to love sunday evenings when i was a kid .... nice bath, then downstairs warmly wrapped up in a big towelling dressing gown to enjoy the sunday tea ritual of boiled eggs and soldiers......... it was heaven.   But joy was always cut short because My dad used to insist on watching "The Onedin line" every bloody sunday... I used to think it was a magic programme ... you start watching it on the sofa, then you wake up the next morning in bed ??   It took me ages to work out that i always fell asleep during it and dad used to carry me up to bed :)

Happy days ...
