Title: Do You Know Where This Is? #3 Post by: Tonji on July 25, 2006, 12:28:12 PM More help needed again guys & gals. I've recently bought (another) large collection of photograph albums. All from the 1890s to early 20th century. I think I know where this is, but I need some confirmation so I can catalogue them with at least 99% certainty.
Your thoughts please. I've a few more I need help with, I'll post them later in the week. Thanks for looking, your help is always greatly appreciated. [attachment deleted by admin] Title: Re: Do You Know Where This Is? #3 Post by: Robert HM on July 25, 2006, 12:29:58 PM Whitby?
Title: Re: Do You Know Where This Is? #3 Post by: Claw75 on July 25, 2006, 12:35:53 PM based on no knowledge at all, i'm going to have a guess at somewhere in Wales (Tenby perhaps?). Don't know why as I've never even been to the Welsh coast, but just got a feeling from those pictures that that is where they are. Probably completely wrong.

First thing I thought when I saw the pics was Whitby, I was last there age 12 on a school trip *_*. Title: Re: Do You Know Where This Is? #3 Post by: Robert HM on July 25, 2006, 01:18:53 PM Well thanks for the congratulations but I don't think it is Whitby now, that pic brings Robin Hood's Bay back to me now. It is along a run of such bays with Runswick Bay the prettiest of them all, and I think the most Northerly.

The first pic I've posted is Robin Hood's bay c1890 - the link is to a picture of Robin Hood's bay today. Or do you mean the top picture? not sure where that is. I cross posted with you, so my last message was in reply to Robert's last message and now I'm getting lost!!!! Certainly the same place, nice find! I can't seem to find anywhere to fit the top piccie yet, could very possibly be the same area. http://www.robin-hoods-bay.co.uk/html/photo_gallery/gallery2ad.htm It is in the same area as Whitby, the same Local Authority I believe, but not part of Whitby. Title: Re: Do You Know Where This Is? #3 Post by: Tonji on July 25, 2006, 02:53:28 PM Thanks all,
your all along my line of thinking, Whitby & Robin Hoods Bay. The reason I need some confirmation is that another photograph in the same album was annotated as Staithes (photo below) this is also in the same area as Whitby. The similarity in geography & architecture makes it difficult to pin down exactly. [attachment deleted by admin] Title: Re: Do You Know Where This Is? #3 Post by: Robert HM on July 25, 2006, 02:55:56 PM I think Staithes is in between Whitby and RHB and has a very deep ravine running down to the harbour.

Think I'll go with Whitby. Here's another showing the fishermen working, this is great photo, in the style of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, also of Whitby. http://www.nmpft.org.uk/insight/collectiononline_selection.asp?exid=40 I've got some more I'm not really sure about, they are from the South Coast, I'll post them tomorrow (can't over work you all :D, i'm sure you have your own work to do) Thanks again all.
