Title: Local area connection down
Post by: redimp on July 27, 2006, 01:08:51 AM
I keep getting disconnected and a pop up comes up with ..

Local area connetion 2 down

I have a reasonable PC I am with AOL,someone has said to me it because my PC is on an extension lead to my phone line??

Is this true??
If so,if i move my PC would this help this problem??

Thanks in advance

The more connections/distance you have between your PC and phone socket, the more chance you have of problems, but tbh unless you have a really bad quality cable it SHOULDN'T make too much of a difference.

Try not to have a cable longer than you need, as the signal degrades the longer it has to travel (again, in a standard house it really shouldn't apply) also try not to have it all coiled up in loops as this can also cause problems (hence not having longer than you need)

So, in answer to your question, Yes, moving the PC and not using the extension should in theory solve your problems.

Unless your extension covers a ground of say, more than 10 metres and/or goes past a large source of electrical interference then it shouldnt be the cause of your disconnections.

Does your router produce any sort of error statistics? Losses etc.... try moving the PC and removing the extention and see what happens.

Is your router wireless or wired?

The local area connection going down normally means that the connection between your PC and your router has been broken - not your router's connection to the net.

Get rid of AOL. Problem solved!

*T&C:
This post does not in anyway insinuate that AOL are crap...they just normally are!

Thanks for the replies

Bongo it is wired

I have moved my PC,removed the extention lead, rang AOL (again) and still no different.

I am at a total loss with it,The only thing I have worked out is that it gets worse and dissco,s more in bad weather.

Thanks again for the help, think its going to have to be a case of binning aol, when the contract runs out.

this problem has got nothing to do with AOL - the problem lies in one of three places -

- the patch cable connecting your pc to the router

- the rj45 socket on your pc

- the rj45 socket on your router

the easiest thing to change is the cable. try a different one of them first.

i once had cable phone problems. the connection kept going on and off. i went to bed one night and heard crackling sounds. i was coming from the connection box on my window frame. turns the hole they drilled through the window frame was leaking rain into the connection box. i had to get my rubber gloves and wooden spoon and pull the wires out after i opened it up. what a sight :)

maybe you got a loose connection somewhere? check all down the wire all the way outside?
