Title: Disk Defragment
Post by: Sark79 on July 27, 2006, 11:41:20 AM
What does it actually do?   Is it good for me?   How often should I take it?   ( my laptop asked me this morning )

Hi Sark, Think of your hard disc as something like a file cabinet, and all the files on your PC are scattered amongst many draws. Some pieces of a certain file are together in the top draw, but other bits of that file are scattered randomly around the other draws. A bit here a few bits there, it gets pretty untidy!

What defrag does is sort of tidy up your file cabinet, it takes out the empty spaces (and returns a nice chunk of empty space back at the end-hopefully) and tries to put things in a nice neat order so your computer can find things easier and quicker. If it has ASKED you to do it, then it's long overdue and it may take longer to do this time than a PC that has it done regularly.

Some people say that everytime you install software you should defrag (way O.T.T if you ask me) but I'll check to see if mine needs doing once a month. It can take anywhere between 5-10 mins to over an hour (I have known FAR longer!)

Sark,

download 'diskeeper' premier edition 10 , from mininova.

By far the best defragment software

Thanks Jane.  I understand that explanation.   Earlier I tried to read through a few examples on a computer website, it had me reaching for the vodka and I don't even drink  :D.

Cheers I appreciate it  :)up
