Title: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 03:59:33 PM
We are up at Sheffield, with the Poker 425 TV Crew, so we thought we may as well try and do a little Mini-Live Update. No Jen, I'm  afraid, so you will  have to make do with the 'ol Fella.

Big thanks to Craig, & all the team at Napoleons in Sheffield, they have been most helpfiul, considering they are Yorkshire folk......

Thick & fast.

Simon "Kasbah" Zach busts out to Fraser Bellamy. His Q-7 was dominated by Q-J, and the QJ flopped the straight. Simon was down to the felt folowing an earlier accident, & had no choice but to "move"......

11 left, and it's a 10 man Final......

Maureen, the nice guy to whom you refer (I assume you do not mean me....) was Simon "Kasbah" Zach, and YES, he is a terrific guy. Sadly, you have just bokked him, he has just exited.....

Prize Money next.....

Also I'm supporting my dad to win it. John CT Law :)

It's lovely & peaceful here, as always on a Day Two afternoon start, except for the non-stop talking of Paul Parker, who talks more than James browning. No, that's unfair - half as much as James......

Hi "unknown", is it Anthony or Daniel?

The buy-in was £750. Your Dad is going just great, he has 180k. I am a big fan of his, he is a perfect gentleman. You can be very proud of your Dad.

Dave Colvclough moves in with the monster K-6 suited, & Alan McLean makes a brave, brave call with AA. But this was after the K-6-x flop...... Dave doubles up to 50k, & looks suitably embarrased, whlist Alan is sitting tight-lipped.....

Daniel - WRONG. We interviewed John (C T Law) in Blackpool, & he gave us a GREAT interview. It's how you ask the questions that matters, & he's just fine.

James (Royal Flush), yes, the payour structures are getting better.

Karabiner - Yes, at Walsall, Greg had K-6  & Dave had K-7 as I recall, & the board paired or something?

Ariston - I guess Paul can't get a word in edgeways when you are at the table. Imagine you & him Heads-Up!

Layne Newport - yes, he exited 17th or 18th I think.

I dont take offence to Jokey comments made on the forum dewi , thats what we are about on here. I will be rooting for Keith myself in this, nothing against any of the others I just like his game if he gets a stack.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 06:00:23 PM

DRAMA! Dave Colclough clashes with L Kerrigan, Kerrigan Raises on the Button - a steal? & Dave in the SB moves all-in, & after a huge dwell, Kerigan calls, on their backs.

Kerrigan must have feared AK or AQ, as he had Dave well covered, & he shows AJ suited, Dave has T-T, & it's a standard "race".

A board of 9-9-K-J-3 sends Dave down the road, with £1,050 but NO Ranking points!

Then John Conroy busts out, all action stuff.

And THEN......

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 06:04:33 PM
And then a HUGE pot, as Keth Hawkins, Hassan Mohammed and John Lawrence ALL get it on. John, has JJ, Hassan QQ, & Camel AK - a perfect Race.

Board is A-8-3-A-9, & Keith takes down a whopper. John survives, but Hassan is history.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 06:21:00 PM
But John Lawrence, weakened after the JJ v QQ v AK affair, thinks John Law is weak & moves in with 8-8, only to run into Kerrigan's, QQ behind him, John CT Law calls too, & John Lawrence was RIGHT, C T Law "only" had 7-7, and a lovely pot is oushed Kerrigan's way, & John Lawrence is OUT in 7th, £2,625.

Some approx chip counts shortly.....

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 06:24:55 PM
Sounds like Julian has ANOTHER successful % swap going for him.......

John C T Law 120k

Alan McLean 40k

Jim Reid 140k

Fraser 70k

Kerrigan 220k

Camel 130k

Then ANOTHER exit.....

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 06:26:09 PM

Fraser reckons his 9-9 is good, & Kerrigan thinks ditto with his AK. But the AK makes a full house, & that's Fraser out, great effort mate, unlucky!

So, 5 left here, & I might yet make the Walsall £300 Freezeout, due to start at 9pm, 90 minutes drive away.....

Go on boys, get them chips in!

We just interviewed Fraser for 425, he was  very gracious, & he's had a great week, picked up £8k earlier in the week, & £3,150 today, so not too bad.....

......and then there were Four!

Alan McLean thought he was im good shape with QQ against Jim Reid's 9-9. but what about THIS for a board...

9-7-7-9-T....!

Alan McLean OUT 5th.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 06:57:23 PM
John Law takes a lovely pot against Kerrigan in a strange hand. Kerrigan raises  with 9-9, John calls with 7-10 spades, no spades come, no 7 or T either, but a board of 6-9-J-Q-K gives no escape for Kerigan, & John takes a nice pot, & is up to maybe 230k.

5 minute break now, so lets get some chip counts......

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 06:59:36 PM
Craig has got me the counts, & Mr Kerrigan's moniker is "Lesley" (or is that Leslie?).

John Law 238k

Jim Reid 132k

Camel 143k

Lesley Kerrigan 199k

Blinds are 3k - 6k - lovely structure, eh? Average is 175,000.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: Karabiner on August 20, 2005, 07:19:58 PM
Leslie is the male form !

 ;)

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 07:26:01 PM

The guys are "fencing" now, Camel jutr RR'd John Law, Jim Reid put his 9-9 down, & John Law passed after a long dwell.

What a great final 4, I don't know L Kerrigan, but the other 3 are all "players" in the widest sense of the word. Wide, too......

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 07:27:42 PM
Jim Reid OUT!

He had A-9, Leslie had QQ, & a flop of AAQ made it "no escape" for both olf them.

Jim takes home £3,825.

Three left.....

hi muirspud, yep, you were a little unlucky in that coup.
tikay had one of those 'unpleasant' drives home last night, one that we all take from time to time - he's made some adjustments to his play, got big chips early & whilst not being reckless, as the night wore on he always seemed to have the second best hand....such is poker.
chin up to you both, there's always another game, always something to be learnt.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 07:40:48 PM

Hi Muir,

Likewise, it was a real pleasure to play against you, I enjoyed it, & the luck was really with me the first half of the comp, I did the trick I did to you 4 or 5 times. But then I paid the bill later, & hand after hand went wrong for me, & then, I just fell to pieces, & played like a complete muppet. A lovely evening though, & I hope you & i meet again.

Julian - thanks mate. It stil pinches, but hey, worse things happen. Phil Quayle is here, we are having fun, & all is well with the world. Gutted for Dave too, 10th & no Euro Points, pah!.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 20, 2005, 07:54:36 PM
"nice play on your exit hand...."

Interestingly, Willie Tann told Jim Reid that it was a bad call by him, I could well have been protecting a set or two pair against a flush draw.

Me? I just think it was an awesome call by Jim, & that's not tongue in cheek. A great read by Reid indeed........

Just goes to show no matter how long you have played this game (and Tikay has been playing longer than all the forum combined) there is always room for improvement. You can learn something new every time you play.

"creative play" Russ. Yeah, I thought "how can I dump all these chips & make myself look really stupid". I managed it with a table to spare.....But at least I did not fall into my old habit of "freezing".

".....two particularly bad plays at Luton". Yeah, against the boy Thewy, who was well at it, I trapped him a treat both times, & he walked right into my subtle trap. I got his number now. Board came 4 diamonds & he tried to represent the flush, the fool. I moved in on him with my AK spades, he passes in a flash.  Men against boys.

"tutulage" eh, wow, posh words from a northern boy.

Now, we've had a bit of an accident here, The Camel moves in & John Law has the KK, so Keith, with TT, & Julian's %, are as good as dead. Until the T flops.....

John C T Law OUT, & very unlucky.

Julian still has his %, & he's lucky, as always.....

If that description of the hand is correct I understand you have now morphed into a latif/bradley hybred without Ians timing. The bet has to win sometimes man, even from Julian.

Russ. The play against Golden Boy? It's all about knowing your players. Thewy is 80% likely to be at it. He can't help it, he an atitmaniac.

Whenever I play Julian he seems to be quite a solid player with no sophisticated moves or anything, maybe I should watch him more carefully  ;)

It's over!

Keith overwhelms Leslie Heads-Up, and oir outright, "no business" winner is Keith The Camel Hawkins.

Congrats to Leslie for a great performance, & to Camel for yet another win, which maybe takes him to the top of the Euro Rankings. And to Golden Boy Thewy for another %....

I honestly believe that some players become addicted to bluffing, they try it once and it works because the table see them as a rock (and rightly so) all of a sudden there trying it all the time.  In the early days Tikay has another nickname - they called him 'the connector' because everytime he limped into a pot he seemed to have connected with it by announcing those immortal words 'i bet the pot' as soon as it passed around to him.  These players then find the slippery slope to 'atitdem' and end up hooked on bluffing.  We must name and shame them: I'll start

Tony 'the connector' Kendall
Ian 'atit' Bradley (mostly preflop atitness from this one- beware!
Julian Thew
Camel

I prefer to play a patient, slow and grinding game.  My mantra is 'bet with the best and fold the rest'

Beware there are atit merchants amongst us!

I cant believe people have me down as a verbals expert and Julian down as an atit merchant. We are a couple of quiet basic players who bet when we have the best hand. Why does nobody believe me?

ariston,

Which Julian is THAT?

And which Junior, whilst reinventing the English Language, with "atitdem"  and "atidness", is claiming to get it in with the best? - kettle & pot springs to mind here. Junior - King of the attidnessful school of poker.

"and tikay". Grr........

And before we say goodnight, and talking of improper English (Ariston, Junior), how about this from Lady of the Moment Jen, who boasts a First Class Degree from Oxford in Classical Languages.

Talking about this or that, she referred to something I had done as "unsensible". Women, eh?

OK, that's it from Super Saturday in Sheffield. Good Night all.

Punk Floyd - thaty's JOHN Conroy - thanks. I am getting terrible with names, sorry.

Daniel ("unknown"), or more correctly, Daniel Law, John C T Law's Son - your Dad gave us a great interview, really. Watch it on Poker 425 from Wednesday night onwards, 11pm. And yes, he was well unlucky to lose with KK to Camel's TT, but as you say, that's Poker.

great stuff tikay... ul in the comp! i'm having the same problem at the mo, building big stacks/good starts then not finalling!

well have to learn i suppose and the hard way i guess lol!

very pleased with how i played at sheffield ul in the main to a john law special! but i did well the 200 only to come 12th but had some nice comments on my play thankyou lord of leeds  ;)

i used to look forward to tikay on my table one extra passive player! now he's moving and shaking like his grandson... who claims to be tight, i nearly spat out my water when he said that lol! some people hav the wrong idea, although i saw his call allin after a raise and a reraise with 64... suited sorry! was the last hand and the dealer did have to drag my 74off out of my hand lol

tikay "....moving & shaking...."  (we will ignore the grandson bit for now).

Yup, I turned my game inside out, & the confidence wsas growing by the day. But Friday's debacle has shattered my confidence completely, & I made a complete idiot of myself in the process. Defeat at poker has never bothered me, but bad play has. It's back to grinding I guess.

don't give it up yet tikay, this is just a hickup... u probably get them more at ur age anyway! think how u got ur chips to that amount then think did u give yourself a chance to win the comp! and i think when ur willing to not only play the premium hands u give yourself a chance to win these events!

look at the camel, yet another victory and he is one of the original movers & shakers! you were just unlucky at the wrong times! as you said, people had one hand better than yours when it really mattered... my problem is i always seem to have the worst hand lol!

as for kevs qestion, thee & thine lasted till just after the first break... he had aq as he would say how can i get away from that when i'm reraised! he defo missed u kev, a lost soul when he was out lol!

see you in blackpool seat5!

I've just read the whole thread and wanted to say thanks for the support. Having "God" on my side defintely helped.

I must say I think this was the final table played in the best spirit I've ever contested. No bitching or over celebrating. Just everyone trying their hardest to win without comprising their ethics. A pleasure from start to finish.

I think I should correct tikay about one of the key hands in the final. The TT v KK hand didn't go exactly as he said. I raised and John smooth called. Fair enough really, when a loony attacks your blind flat calling with a monster is usually the best strategy. I flopped a ten and all the money went in on the turn. It's not to say I wouldn't have lumped it in preflop, but I wasn't such a luckbox after all on this occasion. I suppose when you get to tikay's advanced age it's easy to get these little details mixed up :D especially as he had all his glad handing celeb bit to do as well as a live update!

The key hand for me was one I wasn't involved in. Jim Reid had my number throughout the final table and had reraised me three times to push me off hands. Undoubtedly we were going to play a big pot sometime soon and he would almost certainly have had the better of it. I must say I was relieved when John knocked him out. Jim was definitely Man of the Match. He played superbly and deserved better than 4h place.

As for the rankings. It feels great to be top. I doubt very much if I can win them however. I am now having a couple of months off poker to attend to "other matters". I will be keeping a close eye on proceedings however and although El Blondie himself is massive favourite if he is within striking distance when I return I will give it my best shot.

Lovely post Keith, & my apologies for mis-reporting the TT v KK hand. We try very hard not to let the facts get in the way of a good story. And anyway, I'm a retired Updater these days, Jen's the Daddy now. I did not plan to do an Update, but I was obliged to return for Day Two because olf Poker 425, & I was feeling very contrite after my appalling display the night before, & did not want to go. But I thought it may be good therapy to do a little Update.

But WHAT a Final, & yes, I echo your sentiments. Not ONE whoop or hollar or table bang, no theatricals, played in a lovely spirit, and played very hard. A lovely change, & our congrats to all the Finalists. No deals, either. GREAT STUFF.

Jim Reid? I agree. A tremendous player, a formidable opponent, and a top man. But I did not know WHO I wanted to win, several guys there were particular faves of mine - John Law, Keith, Jim, Alan, Fraser, I was rooting for them ALL.....!

Well played Keith, & good luck with the "other matters".

The interviews will  be on Poker 425 commencing Wednesday.

"glad handing celeb bit".......

Yeah, I must confess, it's a bit embarrassing when half the casino say "Hi tikay" & I don't know who they are. But manners maketh man, so I shake plenty of hands, & exchange kisses where possible......

I can't deny I enjoy it either. Dave's got me right - "no man who achieved so little......"

Well done Keith and a ary nice post too.

From my remote following of the events, it seems that the key hand was where you had AK v QQ v JJ

I was just wondering how the hand was played.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update
Post by: tikay on August 21, 2005, 02:21:43 PM
The AK v QQ v JJ hand. All I know is that they were on their backs Pre-Flop, & John Lawrence (JJ) knew he should not have called.

Post by: Karabiner on August 21, 2005, 02:44:17 PM
I guess Keith was in the middle and RR allin, and the JJ called behind him.

I think that's right Ralph. Physically, the QQ was sitting between Keith's AK & John's JJ, but I don't know where the Button was.

Title: Re: Sheffield Summer Festival - Main Event, Day 2 Live Update

I don't know Daniel, it does not really work like that. (For new readers, "unknown" is Daniel law, John Law's very proud Son).

Look at it this way. At one point, I think your Dad had 300,000 chips. We all started with 10,000 chips. So he had accumulated the ENTIRE chip stacks of 30 players. (Only 70 players started).

Pretty good, huh?

And don't forget to watch his TV Interview on Poker 425, starting Wednesday.
