Title: Opening a bank account in $$
Post by: Rusty on August 05, 2006, 02:10:21 PM
Is this possible for non-american citizens? I currently have a few thousand dollars online earning me no interest in neteller, I assume a lot of you are in similar situations. With the exchange rate being terrible at the moment i dont particularly want to withdraw the money and change it into pounds.

So does anyone know if its possible to either open an account with an american bank or open an account that is held in dollars with a bank such as HSBC?

Many thanks.

Yeah, it's possible.

I've got one with Bank of Scotland. Most banks (if not all) will offer such a service.

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation should be able to sort you out. :)
Just go into your branch and ask to open a foreign currency account in USD.

HSBC do a dollar account and a euro account which I've looked into opening both. However check out the fee's as they often charge an annual fee and individual transaction fee which can make these accounts a tad experience.

This is a terrific idea; I've been thinking for a while about using my US citizenship to open a bank account in dollars to go with my new $$ Neteller account; it would mean applying for a social security number though.

This looks like a good alternative...

Please let us know how you get on if you go for it!

I have a US bank account, pretty easy to open....provided you are in the USA.

When I was last in New York, they asked me for a Social Security Number. Maybe that's because I was waving my American passport at them though :D

LOL yes.

I just had to produce a couple of forms of ID and a bill, simple as that. Took about 30 minutes to do.

just been havin a quick look around, HSBC give a 0.75% interest on the USD currency account and have quite a lot of charges to go with it. On the other hand Halifax/Royal Bank Of Scotland whatever you wanna call the place doesn't seem to charge anything and gives 2.18% interests on accounts with less than $40k.

Looks like im visiting my local halifax tomorrow.

grrrrr damn Halifax... didn't know what I was talking about.

He had to phone up International whatsit department (I dunno, sounded like Thunderbirds to me) only to then tell me I can have a $$ account, but only if I first open a ££ account first as well [existing customers only] - so I would have to have two accounts there?

yeh i went to Halifax today too, the woman i spoke to didn't have a clue what i was asking for, she ended up giving me loads of information on travellers cheques which i told her i didnt want but she was adament that i did want it, i took it and ran away, I'm going to print off the information from their site and take it in next time.

This account sounds cool.

Woman I spoke to in the Halifax knew nothing but after asking her to check with a colleague it seems that you have to go into a Bank of Scotland branch to open it and can't do it at the Halifax. Obviously there are less Bank of Scotland branches about than Halifax and I can't even find a list on their stupid website - though I know there is one in birmingham.

Even the Halifax staff didn't know where my nearest Bank of Scotland branch was. Doh!

Yeah, there's a Bank of Scotland in the Bullring I think. The side of it that is quite near New Street Station.

As I understand it (v tenuous!) there is a possibility that this is due to the merger being a new one; and hopefully in the not too distant future the two halves will be able to coexist with a little more 'user-friendliness'...  8)

Did they not merge about 3/4 years ago though?

They're all too busy auditioning for adverts is my theory.

Guy behind desk in local branch (with no access to BOS website, only Halifax Intranet) told me it was a recent merger.

:dontask:

Maybe he is a geologist, and speaks in relative terms.

I think they've had ample time to sort their arses oot.

I tried this again today and got pissed about so much by them.

Went to Bank of Scotland, they told me I had to go to Halifax to open it

Went to Halifax again, again they told me they didnt do such an account until i proved to them that they did, they looked amazed at how much better of a banker I am than they are, then they told me I had to go to Bank of Scotland to open it.

I give up, I'd rather keep my money in NEteller losing interest than let the Bank Of Scotland have my money, unless anyone knows of any other banks that do good currency accounts?
