Title: how much weight would you lose....
Post by: totalise on August 07, 2006, 06:36:42 AM
lets say you were a fatty and decided to ride a bike from lands end to john o groats, cycling 20 miles a day.. how much weight do you think you would lose if you were:

a) 20 stone
b) 18 stone
c) 16 stone
d) 14 stone

assuming a height of 6 foot. My friend is 20 stone and I am 14 stone and he thinks that after we rode all the way he would weigh about the same as me because it would take up so much energy that we would both eradicate all excess weight from our body. I told him that it was wrong because you cant lose that much weight so quickly without collapsing somewhere.

He has since proposed a sizable prop bet that we ride 20 miles a day every day until we get from x to z. It seems like real easy money to me because I cant see this tub of lard making it (although he is quite fit considering his largeness) for 20 miles a day.

The two obvious downsides for me are a) I wont make as much in this bet as I would playing poker, and b) he might die

but at the same time if I can do something to stop him from being a big fatso for the rest of his life its probably money well spent, plus I can take a laptop and play poker at night anyways

thoughts?

oh yeah, and also we argued about what would win in a fight between a lion and a tiger. he thinks a lion would rule the roost, i think a tiger because tigers use their paws whilst fighting and have bigger mouths (kinda like girls from newcastle) a tiger will reign supreme. I have told him to stump up enough money and we will buy a tiger and a lion and put it to the test.

a) is the notion of buying animals to get them to fight til the death for no other reason then to settle a childish argument ethical?

b) what do you think would win?

20miles a day for how many days? I think your money would be more than safe as I'd guess that he'd lose more weight walking 20miles a day. If you do make the bet and do the Lands End trip it'd be worth it just for the adventure so a loss of a few quid would be neither here nor there.

As far as Lions vs Tigers go I'm not sure where my money would be. How about the following in a tag-team match up?

For the Tigers: Tony,Tim, and the Vegas Tiger that Roy the magician was nearly 'all in' with.

For the Lions: Aslan, Cowardly Lion from WOZ and Lennox 'The Lion' Lewis

Place your bets.

Re: the 20 miles it depends what Mr Fatso eats at the various hotels each night. You may find he puts weight on.

Re: a Lion vs a tiger. The lion is the king of the juggle, how do you think it got this title, I refer you to a previous juggle fight tournament in which the lion was crowned the daddy. Infact the tiger went out in a disappionting 1/4 final fight against the hippo.

I think you should definately do it.

All poker and no long distance cycling makes Jack a dull boy. In 20 years time, you'll still be able to play poker, but might regret failiure to take a unique oppurtunity such as this by the handlebars.

Lion reigns supreme btw. King of the jungle baby.

It has the weight advantage. If you and your friend were to fight to the death, no offence, but my money is on him for the same reason.

Anyone could cycle 20 miles a day. It's not hard at all.

If you were running 20 miles a day then maybe he'd have a chance.

Fair point, maybe 20 miles a day for the first week or so, then build it to 40/50 ish.

the weight thing depends on how much you both eat while you are doing it. remember to eat enough to give you the energy to do the cycle. are you collecting sponsorship for your journey? let us know and im sure you will get some donations.
as for the fight
a) yes it is unethical to buy a lion and tiger just to prove a point. a better way to do it is for you and your mate to dress up as a lion and tiger and have that fight after you complete the bike journey. my wager is that neither of you will have the legs for the fight.
b) the lion however does have the rep of being king of the jungle but you know the old saying ' the bigger they are, the harder they fall' so who knows??

good luck with your journey. if you need anyone to throw you some water on the way past Glasgow, give me a holler!!

20 miles a day on a bike isn't a lot and should only take a couple of hours.  It depends on how long you spend doing them really.  I'd go for 50 miles a day to start with then build up to 70-80. Also 20 miles per day will take you over 40 days, and that's way too long.  You should be aiming for around 3 weeks imo.

Oh, and I'd go for the lion, but it's a bit unethical I suppose.   Probably very illegal too but I bet you could sell tickets to the event for a few quid.

I'd have to agree that the mileage isn't enough and you're on to a sure winner.  I commute on my bike everyday to London - around 15 miles a day and it takes under an hour.  During my ride I see a fair few familiar faces on their bikes and some of the guys are big.  I'm guessing the reason is not lack of exercise, as they're always out there, but the beer / food consumption during the time they're not on the bike.  It's all gonna come down to the calories taken in when on the break.  Bump the mileage up to 50 or more a day and you'd then have to start worrying a bit, but I still think the time it would take to ride the distance is not enough to shed the required 6st to win the bet.  Good Luck.

Oh and defo a tiger, purely because Rocky never won a heavyweight title listening to a song with a Lion in it.... must be on to something there....

Only because the Lion sleeps tonight.

I assume you're going to wake the kitty up prior to the deathmatch.

Doing 20 miles in one day might seem easy... but doing 20 miles a day for a month is completely different. The quality of the bike, in particular the seat will also have an effect - you would both definatly have to put some training into it first to reduce injury.

Oh and they have bloody big hills in Scotland, after a couple of weeks of cycling they will seem even worse!

It's not all the way in Scotland though, 20 miles is a walk in the park.  Couple of big hills yes, but then it's all down hill from there :D

I thought John O'groats was as far as you could get in scotland without getting very wet!

as soon as you cross the border in Scotland, you risk the chance of getting wet. anyway, they will need a dip in the north sea after all that exercise. anyone remeber that billy connolly sketch about bathing in the north sea? lol

20 miles a day is a very slow pace though isn't it? We did better than that walking the West Highland & the Southern Upland ways.

exactly rod tenty miles a day at even a conservative pace of ten mph only means cycling two hours a day, add to this you will be eating a lot of junk and being away from home sinking a few you will probably GAIN weight.

hope im wrong
