Title: NON POKER Blondite favourite music
Post by: AdamM on August 25, 2005, 11:48:51 AM
As Nottingham Newbies thread has started to meander this way let here what Blondite listen to and maybe swap some recommendations for the try before you buy downloaders (I'll grit me teeth).

Try before you buy? I'm in a downloading mood I tend to do the carpet bombing strategy of getting everything and sticking it in a play list.

But that wouldn't work for the common or garden search engine style downloading.

heres mine,

When I was 13 (1986) I was dumbly following the chart music at the time and doing ok with the Smash hits cross word when someone played me Live after Death by Iron Maiden. blew me away and soon had a growing collection of metal albums. AC/DC, Whitesnake, Scorpions, Anthrax, Metallica, Maiden, Slayer, then gradually it got heavier, Nuclear Assault, Napalm Death, Celtic Frost GRRRR >:(

I've mellowed and diversified over the subsequent 18 years and listen to a wide range of Rock and blues based music. I started playing guitar at the time and am not too shabby now. I play in a pop/punk band called FLUFF (not a political activist band) and am in the final straights of my push for fame. the rest of the band are between 18 and 25 but I'm getting a bit old for it all.

If I could recommend one album most of you haven't heard of but everyone should own it'd be Reel Big Fish - Favourite Noise. kinda ska / punk / rock stuff. big horn sectins, wicked sense of umour and really catchy songs. TBYB tracks should be; She has a girlfriend now / She's famous now / sell out / beer.

Favorite Band - Big Country (as they're not going any more I try to get to gigs by new bands with ex BC band members in, namely Casbah Club, with Simon Townsend & Bruce Foxton, and Dead Men Walking, a supergroup with some great rockers in it).

Don't listen to much by bands who haven't at least 1 dead member, but will admit to being quite impressed by Kaiser Chiefs.

Other favorites: AC/DC, The Alarm, The Skids, The Clash, Atlanta Rhythm Section & Lynard Skynard, and nearly forgot Iron Maiden.

Jam Bun Hovis/ no thanks. guitar oriented rock music is not appauling at all. If I'm jamming along to a CD these days it's all sorts. Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, Reef Big Fish, John Denver.

Joe Satriani is god and Steve Vai the prince of darkness.

Adam, I would suggest you listen to RX Bandits. They are truly awesome. If you take Bob Marley, The Police, The Pistols and Maiden, put them in a jar and shake it up, Out would come RX Bandits. The have a sax and trombone player but rock with the best of them. I bought the album many years ago after seeing them support New Found Glory, I loved them live but hated the album. I saw them again later supporting somebody else and thought I have to listen to this again. Put it on and playde in almost constantly for about 4 months. The last two albums, The resignation and Progress are the best (IMHO). Rock/Punk/3rd wave of Ska at it VERY best.

I noticed you put Reel Big Fish (you actually put Reef Big Fish but i guess it was a typo) They actually toured a lot together in the US. RXB are more serious though. Another great band (who toured with Both) are The Exit. Their first album is great.

More mainstream, The Killers album is spectacular and a band I never wanted to like but are growing on me, Muse. I guess you know them anyway.

By the way, RBF are playing Rock City soon.

I hope to be over for FireFest at Rock City at the end of November, some great rock bands playing although most are "melodic" rock.

Is there a particular RX Bandits LP to go for?

Seen RBF 3 time. the only down side I've found with them is, once you've seen RBF live you've really SEEN them. same show 3 times. the new album is rubbish too. clearly written in the studio against the clock. (look out for bands writing songs about writing songs and lines like, "this is the line about..." "this is the song that..."and "that's a good line to take me to the bridge." dead give away and lazy song writing. Favourite Noise and Cheer Up are good LPs though

I kept getting told to listen to RX Bandits a while back, but never really got on with their stuff to be honest - maybe i just picked some bad tracks.

My taste is just getting bizarrer by the day. Whilst I'm mainly punk orientated I still can't resist sticking on a bit Jazz from time to time and am somehow enjoying the Faithless album that my mate left me the other. Combine that with the fact I work with a Hip Hop/Drum n Bass DJ who constantly gets me to listen to stuff (most of which I like) its pretty hard to find anything I really can't listen to.

Bands worth listening to off the top of my head though - Skirtbox (technical punk - ridiculously good muscians), Postal Service (very unique, chilled accoustic stuff with beats), Strike Anywhere (some nice angry punk). ;D

Ok, I'll take this opportunity to admit I have let the iPod/download era pass me by.  Can someone bring me up to speed or point me to a web site that explains it all in idiot's simplicity?

Do you pay for downloads?  If not is it legal?  If not likelyhood of being nicked.  Best sites etc.

Hi maroon... you can pay for music on the net at ligimitate places such as windows media online or  http://www.apple.com/itunes.

There are a number of places you can download music free of charge however I won't list them as i'm not sure what the forums stand point is.

As for an ipod you can transfer any music you have on your computer system to it, untill it is full.
You can transfer your cd's to it or other peoples and this is completely legal (no one could prove it was someone else's cd's. The cds are encripted in a particular way so anyone checking would know that the music is from one.

Personally it would be very bad luck at present to be caught downloading illegally, it is up to you whether you risk it. I would say it is much cheaper though.

Windows media charges around 79p a song. Imagining you want 200 albums and each contain 10 songs that is more than 1500 pound.. you could pay nothing...

Oh Adam, whitesnake? you let yourself down there mate.
Though i was into deep purple and rainbow for a while so whitesnake would be crap to me.

Loved Iron Maiden, actually had every album/single they ever made until about '88 then just went off 'em, IMHO their very best stuff was with Paul D'ianno (sp?), killers and iron maiden lp's.
Just as a little known fact if you have these (vinyl) albums and they don't have "fame" in the top right hand corner they're worth a fortune!! as is my run to the hills picture disc ;)

Overall musically i have just about everything and anything, was into punk from the stranglers (before they went pop) to chaos uk and the dead kennedys, doa, stiff little fingers, then skinhead stuff like cock sparrer and sham69 and early skrewdriver.
The jam (weller is a true god), any ska from the original stuff to bad manners.
Dylan, charlie daniels band (i know) madonna (saw her at wembley) smiths, the cure, mondays, inspiral carpets (best intro ever was their track "saturn 5")..........i could go on and on.
Ian

For those who like their music heavy, Trivium are an exceptional band.

For those who like their music mellow, Tom McRae is damned good.

And I saw Maiden at Donington. They were absolutely spectacular.

Very interesting didn't pick you lot for the heavier stuff. I am typical think of lad my age(25), i was a britpop child and have never really left. Massive oasis fan in my time (growing tired of them now), pulp, blur etc. Favourite bands now are probably Stone Roses and Joy Division / New Order. Think there has been some good stuff recently Kaiser Chiefs, Killers and particularly good album by bloc party IMO. Also liking the Joy Division esque stuff like Interpol and the new Editors album.

If Trivium are the band I'm thinking of the vocals are too shouty (went off that years ago) but the guitarist were spectacular.

I saw Maiden at Donington in 1988 and 2004 and '88 was WAY better. down hill when Bruce left and never got it back.

Whitesnake. Bernie Marsden and Micky Moody are two of the greatest british guitarists of their generation (and I include blackmore and Page)

at gun point I'd pick Blur over Oasis.

currently listening to;
Green Day
Blink 182
Allister
Reel Big Fish
ACDC
Metallica
Less Than Jake

i saw maiden at new street odeon in brum 3 times, first was 85......excellent, they actually said it was their favourite ever venue (not at the time, in an interview years later) also saw them at the NEC (after the odeon stopped live acts).
Dickinson was not their best vocalist, best frontman/showman yes.
Harris best bassist ever NOT Mark King!!
Not even going there on the whitesnake thing pah

I have the Kasabian album and went off it very quickly. I don't really know why, it just started to grate, the only song i like now is LSF (lost souls forever). Never really hit off with The Music, tho there is very good instrumental track called "the walls are getting smaller" that i have off a NME compliation.

Yes pal. Seen them 3 times.. first in a place called the rescue rooms in nottingham(before I knew them and they had released a single). A freind took me and I thought they were awesome, a real crap band on before them as well. I wandered what i let my self into. Turned out good though.
Second time was rock-city in nottingham after they released there album, even better gig as more ppl knew who they were. Came out of it with my t-shirt dripping!
Lastly at glastonbury.. awesome.. I'd try and see them man. Brilliant

Hi Adam. I have Favourite Noise and Cheerp Up. Ban The Tube Top ROCKS!!!  Also agreed on the new album, i was so dissapointed. I have seen them a few times, the best being Brixton Academy about 2 years ago. Goldfingre supported and were very good. They did the best version of '99 Red Balloons' !
If you would only listen to one RXB album I guess 'The Resignation'. 'Progress' is marginally more accessible though. They will not be a band you put on and think instantly, 'I love this band' but the more you listen, the more you hear. Bizarrely, I think their best songs are at the end of the albums, not start, which is unusual. The best way to hear  these boys is live or with a GREAT pair of head phones (and loud). (I bought some 'ETYMOTIC-ER4 Micro Pro' earplugs for my ipod, They cost a couple hundred pounds but worth every penny). There is so much going on with RXB,  great musicians. The drummer is maybe the best I have ever heard or seen ( i must have seen well in excess of 1000 bands live). For tracks to look out for, 'Analogue Boy' is great (you  can hear the influeneces of the Police in this one), 'All Rwandas Glory' is very thought provoking and I challenge anyone not to be foot tapping by the end!). My favourite though would be 'decrescendo', awesome drumming that I can not describe in words! (one of the heavier songs though)

Agree on Satriana and Vai but alot of other lesser knowns are great like Andy Timmons and Pete Lesperance. I am not a fan of Blackmores at all. So far up his own behind. Of course Steve Vai and VERY underated is Nuno Bettencourt. All of the guys in Dream Theater are partuclarly talented.

Post by: AdamM on August 25, 2005, 05:24:42 PM
yes, Nuno was great. Dream theater too widdley, along with Malmstein (though Live he was very entertaining)

Will look out for RXB when I'm selling enough shirts to start CD shopping again. the list's getting pretty long.

Hehe, I had worse nicknames - when i was in my gigging days, when i had long hair, I got called "steffi". Any ideas why?

I grew up in the grunge era and bit my teeth on soundgarden, alice in chains, pearl jam, screaming trees, etc. (as such AdamM's musical tastes woulda made me shiver.... whitesnake!? Even Vai can't be proud of that...). UK wise Stone Roses were incredible for defining an era - even now Kasabian are heavily influenced by them. Guitar wise I did my time with vai (had coffee with him), satriana, etc, but all their beautifully crafted stuff sounds sort of sanitised due to me roots - although I did spend years learning eugene's trickbag till my fingers bled (you have seen crossroads right?).

Anyhow, to me there is only one guitarist worth idolising anyhow... Stevie Ray Vaughn. A cut above.

All Im saying is, in the early days whitesnake we're a brilliant British Blues band. not talking about when they became an American Hair band.

As for SRV, you'll get no argument from me. It's clearly laid out in my will that Lenny be played and I go through the curtains.

For the guitarists amongst us, Adrian Legg. Traceys Big Moment. actually cried listening to that a couple of times. (and I'm 'ard)

I too grew up in the grunge era and was crazy about Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumkins, Seen them all several times including at once Pearl Jam in Bradford i was sat on a balcony left of the stage when the bass player got up on his amp (very high) and starting jigging away.  In a moment of utter madness (have them sometimes) i jumped off the balcony and landed on the amp and danced away with the bass player for the whole song. No i am not insance and no i was not on drugs  ;D  Just excited!

At the moment i love Kasabian also, never really went nuts over the album but saw them in nottingham and had such a good time dancing they totally won me! I love Queens of the Stone Age, The Killers (also didnt want to), Foo Fighters, and Ultimately

KINGS OF LEON - Not sure if many people are into them but they are Awesome!! seen them six times now and they blow me away, even went to New York and saw them twice there!  They are 3 brothers and a cousin from Tennessee and you people must check them out! Not your average band.

I noticed The Fall & Death In Vegas on tikay's i-pod, who'd a thought it!

Grunge and specifically Nirvana killed most of the music I grew up with. To be fair it was for the best. It was getting so you had to be a super huma guitarist even to play in a local band, the leather was getting too much and the Hair was getting out of control. Sometimes amazes me that Metallica are pretty much top of the pile now seeing as when I was a teenage metal head, although they were my favourite band they no bugger outside the thrash metal world was even slightly interested.

Trace, Im a big Queen fan too. have the complete vinyl collection and an ability to instantly recognise pretty mush any Brian May chop in one.

lovin the fact that kasabian is being mentioned alot.

Good music choices chilli. when did you see Kasabian?. kings of Leon are awesome, I completely agree. Only seen them once and that in itself makes you want to see them again. Qotsa, brilliant. Don't like there new album as much as past ones but it's still all cool. Foo Fighters like them? Too young to have been a fan in there time for bands such as pearl jam and nirvana although some of there tracks are my favourite songs, Alive by PJ as one example.

Aha shake heartbreak is also top of my playlist at mo Julian, wierd that.

heh, just yanking your chain Adam! I was there with my gun's n roses album, miming to slash at one point too.... (and still rate master of puppets).

More interestingly what's the most embarressing album you've ever had? No shame guys. Oust your worst music.

For me its probably between...Jive Bunny and ... guh... jason and kylie [shiver]. No, I have no idea. I was far too young, and can take absolutely no responsibilty whatsoever....

Most awful album anyone bought me for christmas was Europe cant even remember the name of the album! Sure Adam has this in his collection ( American, big hair, tight pants!! hehe).

I bought myself Pan Pipe Moods "featuring the haunting sound of the pan pipes" (REALLY, no shit).  In one of my moments again!

YEY YEY YEY Go Kings of Leon fans.  My estimation on alot of poker players has gone up after hearing other people have as exquisite taste as myself on this matter.

Stoo, only saw Kasabian in June at the Ice Arena.

Rabbit was a mate of mine in the early 70's

He played keyboards with Bad Company.

I'll always remember him turning up on my doorstep one snowy Xmas Eve with a bottle of Southern Comfort

It's all a bit hazy after that, but they do say that if you can remember those years you weren't there.

So Dire Straits, Aerosmith, The Cure, Happy Mondays, Scissor Sistors, The B52's, & Eminem don't get me any House Points then? Pah!

worst purchases - too many to mention, one of the perils of being a serial purchaser!
best gig was the Pixies at the brixton academy in 93,
biggest regret was not seeing the Smiths,
most memorable moment was borrowing the Clash's London Calling in 79

He was American or Canadian. I met him at the old Island studios in Nottiing Hill.

Not sure about Pink Floyd, but he played on the first couple of  Bob Marley albums.

I think his real name was Bundrick or something similar.

sounds familiar, John Bunndrick?

The Guy I met used to drink in The White Swan in Barrowby and drank alot. one day he over heard a conversation about Pink Floyd and butted in claiming to have toured with them. He was a bit Sauced up at the time so no-one paid much attention. next week he turned up with a live Floyd video and, sure enough there he was. Had a big house in Harlaxton near by with a studio set up. sounds like the same guy.

Small world innit

Not sure about the rest Tikay but i do like the happy mondays but they were a bit hit and miss to say the least. Pills, thrills n bellyaches is a classic but alot of the other albums were mediocre. I had the (mis)fortune to see them support oasis back in 2000 on of their comebacks and to be honest they were a shambles. Sean Ryder completely on another planet, I think he had indulged quite a bit that day.

okay, gonna throw my 'genre' into the mix...

loving the 70's jazz funk rare groove sound....picture the soundtrack to one of John Holmes or early Ron Jeremy masterpieces, or to those unfamiliar with such screen legends, say a Starsky and Hutch movie!!...I'm talking wah wah, hammond organ, way out guitar solo's and downright dirty beats.

to list a few, Bobbi Humphrey, Johhny Hammond, Donald Byrd, Roy Ayres, Mike Longo, Bob James....

quality cheesey tunes - get surfing!....

Also loving a bit of hardcore gansta rap-loving the lyrics, old skool hip hop, as well as one or two modern day 'bands of the moment'....and some main stream stuff too.....basically I like a bit of eveything and the mp3 player is loaded up with about as diverse a mix as you could ever want.

Not spamming here but for music lovers who like to download without file sharing try this:

http://www.allofmp3.com/

Great site - you do pay for the tunes but they are so cheap it's ridiculous - check it out.  I downloaded the whole Coldplay X & Y album last night for my better half for $1.76! - how cheap is that!  No problem with the downloads, select the quality and format you want and you get exactly what you expect - not like some of the file sharing sites.....thoroughly recommend it.  little tip if you do sign up - download the 'explorer' tool - so much easier to dowload multiple tracks.

Did YOu nkow the Pixies have reformed Julian? Funnily enough, going back to the start of the link, I went to see Reel Big Fish at Brixton Academy a year or two ago and either four nights before, or four consecutive after, The Pixies played there. every night s a complete sell out. Bowie also did a cover of "Cactus" on his last but one album, Heathern. A great version.

Just been to tesco to get the shopping in, and bought X&Y by coldplay ... I have heard a few tracks on radio/tv etc.

Although i think Chris Martin is a bit of a plank as a bloke, you cant argue with the blokes ability to write and carry a tune... personally I think the track "FIX YOU" will probably be hailed as the bands best ever anthem,  FANTASTIC album.... and they can put that on the advertising blurb for a small fee :)

IMO Definitley Maybe is a better than album than morning glory. It was raw but had a real effect at the time, i think Noel especially to prove at the time and that brought the best out of him. Its all about escapism which can only be expressed when you want to escape from something ie working class manchester. I think they went downhill when the money started rolling in. Morning glory is a good album tho

Bought this album when i was.........back then anyway, cost me £6 odd at a time when i was on the YTS earning £28 a week.
Guess what? i fell asleep on the bus and woke up at my stop, jumped off and left it!!
So, the next week did the same journey and bought it again.
Finally get in the house run upstairs and put it on, it is absolutely, unquestionably, definitely..............the WORST album of all time!!
I have never heard such a pile of shite in my life and i bought it twice!!

Absolutely have to agree with you there. I had the album as soon as it came out way before they made it big. I see no mention for Velvet Revolver here. At first I didn't think much of it but it has grown on me and is my current favourite driving CD.

Also on my playlist at the mo: Anything AC/DC - The ultimate gods of rock, Scissor sisters, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Alterbridge, Creed, Him, Kid Rock, Pearl Jam & Green Day.

Best Music DVD - has to be S&M by Metallica & Orchestra, yet to find anyone who doesn't like - even my mum thinks it is great! Closely followed by AC/DC's Balls of steel.

Best Guitarist - Joe Satriani - awesome live

Title: Re: NON POKER Blondite favourite music

yeah, seen Satch 3 times. best was on a G3 tour. Adrian Legg opened and was spell binding. for anyone who doesn't know him and cares he's an acoustic guitarist who, as well as sliding and bending also tunes up and down mid song. hard to explain but it's incredible. Vai was on next and was phenominal. Satriani was his usual amzing self but the encore was Satriani and Vai on stage together cutting heads. enough to make any guitarist cry for a month.

Also worth a mention as I'm sure Luckyblind will agree, Stu Hamms Bass solo, bassed aaround Moonlight Sonata it without question the best piece of bass playing you'd ever see. second time I saw it at Albert hall I actually let a tear go. :'( baby

Not your average band.

defo the best list on this thread, astounding choices there love them all!

only one you missed that are amazing - metalica~: saw them twice!

Amazed to see a tribute band featured among so many of you's collection of "faves". How DID Oasis get away with mimicking the Beatles for so long?

And Julian gets the Aladdin Sane / A Lad Insane one correct, sadly the "lad" took his life in terrible circumstances.

Appetite for Destruction was Genre Defining. look at what else was about in 1986. nothing like GnR thats for sure. You fell into one of 3 camps. Metal (Maiden/ACDC/Scorpions/Whitesnake/etc) Thrash (Metallica/Megadeth/Anthrax/Slayer) of Glam (Motley Crue/Kiss/Faster Pussycat/Poison)

GnR came along and although when you first saw a picture of them yuo might assume they were just another LA Sleaze/Glam Band when you listened to it it was so much more. an absolute classic album and as I said, 15 Million Albums sold to date.

One for the 40 year old's.
I was listening to New Order's ceremony on my IPOD last night and distinctly remember owning a cassette with the far better Joy Division version of the song. The only version of Ceremony by Joy Division I have now, seems to have a problem where one of the mic's fail for the first half of the song. Has anybody got any idea what I am talking about? It's sort of bugging me. I can still humm the original version so I think it existed. Its not a figment of my imagination....I think.
(Is it any surprise I am out of form?)

Stu Hamms Bass Solo was the best I have ever seen, Although for entertainment value Gene Simmons comes close!

Green Day, after thrashing around for a good few years, seem to be the new band of the moment. Eight Nominations for the MTV Awards, seven "gongs".  Obnviously, the whole thing is rigged, but with the marketing muscle of the big record labels, & MTV on side, clearly Green Day are gonna get a lot more exposure now. No bad thing, either.

No bad thing, either.

new band! I think I got my hands on my first green day album in 1994 - dookie. Green day are old warhorses now ;)

In the most unlikely event ever (considering neither band were still together 18 months ago) I've just seen my two favourite bands, The Pixies and The Wedding Present,  playing the same stage on the same day at the Leeds Festival.  Quite a day!

A few other bands on my list:
The Strokes
The White Stripes
Kings of Leon
Pavement / Steven Malkmus
Belle & Sebastian
The Delgados
Drugstore
plus just about all the indie stuff from 1989 - 1995, although the standard dropped as it gradually became Britpop.

Best album of all time - The Stone Roses debut album without a doubt.

Album I currently can't stop listening to: 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea' by Neutral Milk Hotel.  Someone with similar tastes to me recommended it a while back.  I had to buy it from the States as I couldn't find it over here.  Boy, was it worth it.  Bizarre, beautiful, haunting, disturbing and addictive - all at the same time!

A few times in my life I have done thngs which bought me great happiness, or sadness, or both, & for which I ummed & arred for ever before actually starting. One related to a young lady whose home I drove past nightly, & I always wanted to go & knock on her door, da de da de da. And I did, followed by exquisitye happiness & terrible sadness, you know how these things go sometimes.

So, for some time now, I have been thinking of.......well, today sums up blonde, such a nice atmo on here, and last night, a great bunch, all finding out about each other, and having a ball, no nastiness at all. Well, anyway, I kinda keep thinking that we should have a sort of "blonde bash" maybe annually, just after Christmas perhaps (I don't "do" Christmas), and we all get together one night, & the musicians come & do their bit, and Red tells a few stories, maybe a few SNG's, we make a few Awards - "blonde of the Year", "Best Post", "Best achevement by a blondeite", "Worst Player" (excluding Ariston), bring the partners along.......

Will I live to regret this post?

I might be a bit late here, but I was at Reading festival, so it isn't my fault.

Has anyone here tried Audioscrobbler (it seems to have become recently merged with last.fm), it keeps track of everything you listen to on your PC and makes charts and things:

http://www.last.fm/user/bongokingbaby/
that links to my profile so you can see what rubbish i listen to :)

As to downloading tracks, i'd avoid allofmp3.com, it's legallity is in doubt and i'd rather not pay the russian mafia for something that isn't legal. Since I found napster My CD collection has grown from about 15 (and no real interest in any) to hundreds and always wanting more, mostly from smaller bands that don't get a lot of airtime/promotions.

RX bandits are great, although they did try to chat up my GF in rock city after they played  :D

Does anyone else like Sublime? I'd heartily recommend them, a sort of mash up of punk, ska, dub and many other things i guess  ???

Other bands worth a listen (off the top of my head):

Rilo Kiley
Piney Gir
Buck 65
MC Lars (literate Hip Hop, he does versions of MacBeth (called Rapbeth) and Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven".
The Weakerthans
The Postal Service (great electronic pop).
Bright Eyes (and the more rock side project Desparacidos)
Manu Chao

Also a great album i found a few weeks back is "Rock Swings" by Paul Anka (60's crooner covers rock songs, it's like a serious version of Richard Cheese)

I think I should stop, i'll go on all week otherwise  :D

This is where your leadership skills will be tested Tikay old chap, You need to come up with a date and venue well in advance, and then those that can come will come , and those that cant will have to wait until next time...TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS ...and as you say JDI !!!

i would suggest somewhere like birmingham as a venue it is quite central and most of us can get there in under 3 hours (even if it means flying) we have a choice of casinos that we can sort out a private tourny in plenty of quailty hotels and in janurary they will being delighted to host a do and to wrap it all up there is a few lapdancing clubs

the other location would be london but birmingham is a cheap night out than london

Birmingham, or, & not just because I live close by, Nottingham - both are roughly "Central" in the UK, have good road & air links, & are much cheaper than London.

And we would need to keep the cost down - not everyone can afford too much, & it would be intended to be for everyone, not just the "deep pockets".

If blonde is going well, I am sure we would chip in a few bob too.

I would have thought East or West Midlands too, and I'm a fair way away from either

Anything with good transport links, a reasonably priced hotel nearby and a good function room

January will be good value, quietest time of the year for those guys

and I echo earlier sentiments...set a date and location and if you can make it, great. Let's avoid polls etc...too many people to satisfy everyone!!

Tikay: Bloody great idea, yes you may live to regret it though the rest of us won't. I hate do's as well, remember I turned up late at the Gala and left early, but this will be an extension of a casino buffet with knobs on, not just "a do". Suggest you get "soundings" with ironside and polls only if you really really have to. Midlands looks fav I suppose.

Ladies and gentlemen ... Mr. Kenny Rogers

The Gambler

On a warm summer?s evenin? on a train bound for nowhere,
I met up with the gambler; we were both too tired to sleep.
So we took turns a starin? out the window at the darkness
?til boredom overtook us, and he began to speak.

He said, son, I?ve made a life out of readin? people?s faces,
And knowin? what their cards were by the way they held their eyes.
So if you don?t mind my sayin?, I can see you?re out of aces.
For a taste of your whiskey I?ll give you some advice.

So I handed him my bottle and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light.
And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression.
Said, if you?re gonna play the game, boy, ya gotta learn to play it right.

You got to know when to hold ?em, know when to fold ?em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you?re sittin? at the table.
There?ll be time enough for countin? when the dealin?s done.

Now ev?ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin?
Is knowin? what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
?cause ev?ry hand?s a winner and ev?ry hand?s a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.

So when he?d finished speakin?, he turned back towards the window,
Crushed out his cigarette and faded off to sleep.
And somewhere in the darkness the gambler, he broke even.
But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep.

You got to know when to hold ?em, know when to fold ?em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count your money when you?re sittin? at the table.
There?ll be time enough for countin? when the dealin?s done.

You got to know when to hold ?em, know when to fold ?em,
Know when to walk away and know when to run.
You never count you r money when you?re sittin? at the table.
There?ll be time enough for countin? when the dealin?s done.

Cant beat a good compilation in my view, and especially if ya choose the songs and order they even play, i mean, a bit of everything, that has to be best of the best, no reasoning, but depending on ya choices ya said so far, i wanna take ya to a bit of a rock path i was sort of following in my day,

Apart from 1,9, 11, & of course 12, which is one of THE greatest & most timeless tracks ever laid down, I would rather listen to Thee from Thine singing than listen to that lot.

Oh, & why not add "Lucky You" by the Lightning Seeds?

"Lucky Man" by The Verve would suit you Tikay

Explanation please T-E. I cant abide The Verve, so it's not a track I'm familiar with. But if it's just the title, well, you are SO right!

I was being complimentary.

It seems to me you have a great time, in lots of ways, so the title of that song says it all

Of course, it could be said to be valid for your poker skills too....but I wasn't actually suggesting that. This time!

Ah, gotcha T-E, I was maybe looking for some subtle meaning that was not there.

Me a Lucky Man? Too right, the world's luckiest, & don't I know it. Life has been good to me, & so has poker.

always loved this song... its off "color of money" the bit where tom cruise is hustling the black guy with the cowboy hat!

It just makes you smile... Warren Zevon - WereWolf in London

Fantastic!

As suggested by Adam, about a million pages back in this thread......here goes (ignoring the obvious like Hendrix/ The Who/ Led Zep, etc.) and in no particular order:

Blind Willie McTell
Mississippi John Hurt
John Lee Hooker
Rory Gallagher
Martin Simpson
Duke Ellington
Miles Davis
Willie Nelson
Michael Hedges
John Martyn
Ry Cooder
Jon Strong (what do you mean you've never heard of him!)

And.....TOM WAITS...........

I'm still working on my own masterpiece. It mixes the chordal complexity of Status Quo with the intelligent lyrics of Marc Bolan and the classical melodic sensibility of Sid Vicious, made perfect by being performed  with the boyish good looks of Keef Richards.

And my poker skills are even worse  :-[

IMHO, Bob Dylan is the greatest musician alive today.

Talented singer songwriter from the US. Compared by some to Dylan. Not that accurately, but worth checking out mate
