Title: An Underage Gambler In Vegas
Post by: Rusty on August 26, 2006, 03:23:00 PM
I'm off on my hols soon mostly to the California area but will be going to Vegas for 2-3days, only problem is I'm 19 so will there actually be anything for me to do in Vegas? Always wanted to go but I'm going to hate not being able to play poker or blackjack, what can a underage guy do in a town built for 21 year olds?

If any1 has any good recomendations for things to do in other areas (San Fran, Yosemite, San Diego, LA) then they wouldnt go amiss either.

Many thanks in advance.

Pissy casinos up the North end of the strip and downtown arn't so keen to ID everyone under 25 as the big ones down the South end and in the middle are.

Not that I advocate breaking the local law or anything. ::)

You probably are better off exploring other areas, Vegas must be pissy when you're under 21.

Don't do what Adrian Lewis (dart player) did. He won the jackpot on a slot machine and didn't get paid because he was under 21.

anybody know of anything non gambling related that may be of interest to visit?

I dont want to risk winning a jackpot and not getting paid, I'd cry myself to sleep for a year if i lost £40k.

There's loads there to do and see, in particular the helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon.

However, much of what's there centres around walking through and around the casinos and, strictly speaking, you're not even allowed to loiter on the casino floor.

Much depends on how old you look.  If you're not planning to gamble or buy drinks then chances are you won't be asked for ID.  However, I was there for a wedding a couple of years ago where two bridesmaids (aged around 7-10) were frogmarched away from part of the MGM casino floor (wearing their bridesmaid outfits and with their mother) due to these rules.

Was it their age or the fact they were wearing puff sleeves that caused security to move in?

So far, this is proving to be the impossible challenge for me in Vegas.  No-one will go on them with me and no-one fancies waiting while I queue up to go on them alone.

Chances of Sophie going on them = Zero (more chance of getting her in the water with the sharks) but she's not the only culprit!

The bar that you supposedly hang onto on one of those Stratosphere rides gets really hot (coz it's in the middle of the fookin desert and it's made of metal) so you can't really hold it without getting burned.

Scared s**tless though, so 4th degree burns (yes, I just made that up) were the lesser of two evils.

If you're into rides, the Sahara and New York, New York boast scary coasters too. If there's still a funny smell, that's me, I apologise.

If you visit the Hoover Dam on a bus tour, you only get two hours there. I recommend not going on the guided tour of the power station. It takes about an hour and a half, and is nothing special. (most of your time there will be spent queueing)

Better spending the time enjoying the amazing view from the top, and sides of the dam, the visitor centre, and the Hot Dog shop  ;)

Well at least there seems to be plenty of rollercoasters and sightseeing for me to do, better than nothing. I didn't realise that i wasnt allowed on the casino floor though, just thought I couldn't play anything, nevermind ayy.

You generally have to pass through most of the casino areas to get anywhere in the hotels (so as to encourage you to stop and gamble).  That's why the rule is that you can't loiter there, as its unavoidable that children have to walk through the area at times.

I confess, I am a wuss when it comes to unnatural monstrositys that they call "rides"

Only reason i do em is the 8 year olds in the queue (can't really back out if they're doing it)

Take a helicopter ride down the canyon it's truly amazing and well worth the money.
