 Aston Villa have completed the signing of Stilian Petrov from Celtic.

The Bulgarian international has signed a four-year deal at Villa Park and becomes the first signing for Martin O'Neill.

Villa have paid £6.5 million for Petrov which could rise to £8 million.

Petrov has been seeking a move away from Celtic all summer after he handed in a transfer request at the end of last season.

O'Neill was keen to be reunited with the goalscoring midfielder after enjoying five successful years together in Glasgow and he has finally got his man.

Petrov's departure could pave the way for Celtic to bring in Thomas Gravesen with the Dane set to make a decision on his future later on Wednesday.

no surprises there - it was always on the cards that O'Neill would raid all of the decent players celtic had that would cut it in the premiership.

and he managed to get them all before the transfer deadline as well!!

i think he has some engine, gets forward well and scores important golas. he also has  a good grafting workrate and can only really improve...i will be genuinly interested to see how he does.

not a celtic hater either - heck the only way we can qualify for europe is through the fairplay league and after 2 red cards in first 3 games thats a non-starter either.

but then being a charlton fan you have to look on the funny side for everything otherwise i'd have thrown myself off a bridge well before now!! ;)

now now matey, what i ment was, He WAS a legend for Celtic!...and should be a legend for Villa (but i havent seen him play for Villa so cannot comment)

 i liked him as a player , he done a good service for the Bhoys , but as far as im concerned his heart wasnt in it the past season and hes better away from the club , i am not convinced he can cut it at in the premiership and dont really care if he does.

 im happy with the replacements , Jarosik , Gravesen , Nakamura , Maloney and McGeady in midfield I think well score a barrel load of goals this season

first up, stan was definately a match winner(even this season) . i think it kind of started going wrong for stan when strachan handed lennon the captains armband, i think stan was getting himself ready for the captaincy in oneils final season by being a lot more agressive and vocal on the park,i think it was a big blow to him. i wish stan all the best and i thank him for some great memories, he was a major part of a team wich was the best celtic team of my lifetime, god bless you stan.

Baptista leads influx from South America
ON A transfer deadline day that promises to leave managers, chairmen, agents and football supporters in a daze, the most frenzied activity may take place at Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium.

Arsène Wenger was last night pondering a deal to sign Júlio Baptista on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, with José Antonio Reyes returning to Spain for a year, although that deal could yet be overshadowed by the prospect of two of Argentina’s World Cup stars moving to one of the Barclays Premiership’s backwaters.

A meeting in London yesterday between the powerbrokers at Corinthians, the Brazilian club, ended with the prospect of Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tévez, the finest young players in South America, joining a Premiership club on loan. The club in question was unclear last night, but rather than Chelsea or Manchester United, who have monitored both players obsessively over the past 12 months, their destination was rumoured to be Portsmouth or another ambitious club with money to spend.

Such news is certain to provoke despondency among supporters of United, given Sir Alex Ferguson’s obvious need for a top-class midfield general and a centre forward, but it seems that Corinthians’ masterplan is to loan the players to a Premiership club this season in the hope of attracting a mammoth bid from United or Chelsea next summer. Ferguson, having cooled his enthusiasm about bidding for Mascherano this summer, is understood to have welcomed the initiative.

Any move involving Mascherano or Tévez is certain to capture attention as the transfer window closes, with clubs having until midnight to register any new signings, but there will be no shortage of activity elsewhere. Even though the deal has been described as “dead”, there remains the possibility that Ashley Cole’s acrimonious move from Arsenal to Chelsea may be revived.

Chelsea maintain that they will not increase their offer, but they believe the Arsenal board may finally be panicked into accepting their £17 million offer for a player who has made clear his displeasure with life in North London.

With or without a deal for Cole, Arsenal promise to be the biggest movers and shakers of the day, with Reyes hoping to complete a “dream” move to Real, albeit initially on a season-long loan, and Baptista potentially moving in the opposite direction.

That deal is not certain to happen, with Atlético Madrid offering Reyes the option of a permanent £13 million transfer, but all parties were last night attempting to drive it forward, with Baptista, the Brazil forward, attempting to secure a Spanish passport in order to overcome work-permit complications.

Should Reyes join Atlético rather than their Madrid rivals, there would be a knock-on effect for Tottenham Hotspur, who would be hopeful of signing Martin Petrov, the Bulgaria winger, on loan. It would end Tottenham’s long search for a top-class left winger, but numerous options are being explored.

These include not only Stewart Downing, of Middlesbrough, a long-time target, but also Harry Kewell. Liverpool are understood to have turned down a loan bid yesterday. The Merseyside club, for their part, are in talks with Blackburn Rovers to sign Lucas Neill, the Australia defender, with Stephen Warnock possibly moving in the opposite direction.

Other busy clubs will include Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Portsmouth, all with money to spend. Andrew Cole, the former England forward, was last night undergoing a medical at Portsmouth after informing Manchester City that he wished to join the South Coast club. City may also offload Danny Mills to Blackburn as Neill’s replacement."

stan was a great player. but for somone of his talent. tell me 1 game were we were behind in  a game and he grabbed the game by the scruf on the neck and changed the game the way larsson or prso or the likes did. 

this is the only thing that ever let the guy down.
