THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

It is believed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and is yet to be told of her husband's death.

Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.

He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.

Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign.

"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.

A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state.

Louise Yates said it was impossible to quantify how much Mr Irwin had meant to the Queensland tourism industry.

"I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said.

"It would be difficult to estimate how much he was worth. And it would be difficult to underestimate."

She said Irwin had been a larger-than-life ambassador.

"It's not just what he brought but what he took with him when he travelled, his passion."

Australia Zoo, on southeast Queensland's Sunshine Coast, employs more than 500 people and attracts thousands of visitors every day.

But Ms Yates said it would be "unfair and unjust" to put a dollar value on Irwin's worth to the state, because of how much he had given.

I loved his shows, he had so much love for nature.

It was such a shock to hear the news this morning.

A sad day indeed, he was a top bloke.

Terrible news.  He died doing what he loved, though.

Just heard about it too.  I can't say I am shocked though, he messes with animals that can kill every day of the week, one was bound to get him eventually.

I just saw this on the News.  What a terrible thing to happen at only 44.   He will be missed, a true legend.  Regardless of whether or not you like nature and wildlife shows, everyone loved Steve. What a loss  :(

Just been listening to the news and apparently only 3 people in Australia have ever died in this way. 

His shows were excellent and he did a great deal for his field.  Truely an ambassador for Australia.

I think alot of people will end up taking the p1ss about this unfortunately. I have to say when I first saw him on the screen I was totally dumbfounded at the sort of stuff he used to do and I thought he was absolutely superb, I will miss his shows greatly.

The one incident that I will always remember was in a show when he was taking pride in the fact that he had never been bitten by a venomous snake. In the very next shot he was messing with a death adder which gives a potentially fatal bite, and he was bitten! However the lucky sod was bitten on the finger nail so it didn't penetrate the skin, lucky sod!

Underneath the showman, was a guy who had a genuine and deep love for animals. He was a great guy and was known right across the planet.   I remember one of his shows was in Africa and featured Gorillas.  The expert who cared for the Gorillas said that out of everyone he had ever worked with ( Including Gorilla experts ) Steve Irwin was the most natural person around animals. This was coming from a well known Zoologist in Africa. 

He was far more than just an act for the camera's.

Proper entertaining, and informative geezer and a real shame this has happened. Watched an interview with him once and he said his demise would come through his passion of his job. So I suppose he saw it coming, and what a way to go, doing something that you really are passionate about.

Now i will never find out who would win at table tennis between a gator and a hippo :(

Terrible news - my oldest children are so upset! My thoughts are with his young family...

Very sad new, someone which such passion for the animals and in a way that was so entertaining for us to watch.  I'm sure he'll be missed deeply by so many.

Sad news, he was fantastically entertaining as his passion and enthusiasm was so obvious to see.

The incident which killed him is such a freak event too.  I was hand feeding stingrays in the Bahamas less than 3 weeks ago.  They're creatures that you can safely get close to provided you don't act like an idiot.  They'll attack if threatened which generally means accidentally stepping or falling on one.

Even if attacked, this will very rarely prove to be fatal.  The tail hits with massive force and has razor sharp barbs on it so it'll take a lump of flesh with it (the Bahaman's described the experience as feeling like being shot).  The venom itself isn't that powerful as far as humans are concerned.

However, in this case it sounds as if his heart was pierced by the blow, most likely prompting a fatal heart attack or doing enough damage to a vulnerable part of the body.

that really is sad, he had such an enthusiasm for life and animals, he seemed like a great guy, passionate and committed to the well being of the planet and all its inhabitants.

I dont usually take much of an interest in celebrity affairs but i really did think guy was genuine, likeable, and respected life a way in which allowed him to live everyday to its full potential.

The one Steve Irwin moment I remember best (because it sent shivers down my spine) was when he was on a rocky wooded slope in the US looking for timber rattlesnakes - he found one, caught it and was crouched behind a rock showing the snake, then he froze, there was another under the rock - rattling & right in line with his groin. It was terrifying to watch.

He was great to watch and did a hell of a lot for wildlife. It's a sad loss.


PS John - shocking man - but I laughed.

I remember that, bit of an outcry at the time.

He talked out that.  He said unless there was an earthquake that registered 6.8 on the scale, he would not have fallen over with the kid.   :D

Twenty years from now when I am grey and old, I will be telling my Kids when they are watching Irwins son on TV " aiee, I used to watch his Dad twenty years ago, he was a top bloke ".

C'mon John - what he did with his kid was stupid - but he knew what he was doing in that environemnt. I'd say taking a baby on a motorbike was stupid - but some people would be perfectly safe doing it.

The baby thing is shocking.  He have known what he was doing but the croc didn't.  The clip where he takes his girl in too is a bit worrying, she must have been scared shitless.

I have to disagree, although it looks shocking its HIS culture and how he was raised. I have no doubt that if anything freakish did happen he would have sacrificed himself rather than harm his baby. At least that is what i would like to think?

I have to say i loved watching the bloke, exhilarating TV.
He will be sadly missed, RIP Steve.

However the baby thing was just wrong and for those who say that it was ok because he knew what he was doing and understands crocs so well.............how come he got bit himself several times??

It reflects more on you than on him if this is what you remember him for.

I recall he was crying once over a crock he had known for years when he came accross her lying dead, she had passed on in her sleep and he was grief sticken.

He truely loved nature and he knew the dangers as well as the beauty of it.

You're probably right (about keeping the baby safe) but it's a very cheap publicity stunt that could have gone wrong.  Just because he was brought up like that doesn't make it right.

Saying that, it's good that some people are like that as we get to understand more of the world around us.

I just don't agree with taking a baby in.  If he want's to do that sort of thing, do it in private in a more controlled environment where less can go wrong.  Animals can go loopy with crowds.

Anyway, that's not what I remember him for as I've only just found out about it, I still think he contributed a lot to the environment.

I am sure Gordon Ramsey cuts himself while cooking, Valentino Rossi falls from his bike and tikay doesn't win every tournament he plays.  These are the best in their chosen fields.  Irwin was the best in his chosen field and he should be remembered that way

How many times was he bitten by crocs? Last I saw him he'd all fingers and toes intact.

He had many lucky escapes, he was dragged into the water by at least one (there were more in the water) and luckily it released him.

I'm sure Gordon Ramsay doesn't chuck knives around round his children though!

Freshwater croc - not dangerous - it's grabbed the noose & he's hung on. Again - he knows what he's doing - he'd never have taken that risk with a saltwater croc.

In fairness it just sidetracked a little as things tend to on here.

There was an episode of his show i saw recently where his staff at The Australia Zoo brought in a fake Arab prince.
The ruse was that he would donate a chunky amount to the zoo and Steve had to keep him happy, the "prince" during a tour of the zoo said he wanted the camels in the zoo and Steve was devastated at the thought of giving his "friends" away.
Sums him up i think, he loved all of the animals.

He was a top man, had such zeal for nature and his job. People like him are an inspiration.

The thing with his kid may have been a bit of a misjudgement but the truth is they were probably a lot safer than when most parents push a pram across the road.

He devoted himself to nature, protecting it through the various programmes he instigated and illuminating it for the world to see up close.

RIP. The world will miss him.

I have a phobia of deeeeep water cos my dad took into the sea (waaaay out of my depth and i couldn't swim) when i really young and i cr@pped myself.

I don't think people should speak ill of the dead.

Terrible news.  He died doing what he loved, though.

The Australian Government have offered his Family a state funeral.  His Father said that he felt Steve wouldn't want this and preferred it to remain low key

The video footage shows Steve pulling the barb from his own chest before dying moments later. His Manager is calling for the tape to be destroyed after the police finish with it.

I expect it will be on youtube within the month.

His familly have already said they'll respect his wishes and let it be broadcast.

I liked the guy, though he was a bit loud for my liking he really cared..and that counts where I'm from.

 44 years , i have only ever seen him on tv yet feel as if i know him personally and was deeply distressed by the news.

 it is so sad that a man of his skill and character has been taken from the world , his family and his fans .

  my best memory of him was an episode he was swimming with deadly alligators in new zealand

 he came out of the water and said '' these alligators are the deadliest in the world , if you ever see one stay clear of he water , but ive been swimming with them since i was 4 years old so i am in no danger . ''
