Title: 1907 Newspaper Post by: Sark79 on September 06, 2006, 07:57:36 PM Today I was helping someone track down a leak in a roof. Unfortunately as I am smaller than my mates, I had the nasty part of the job and had to crawl along behind a wall for about 30 ft in an upstairs section of the house. To be honest, I wasn't absolutely thrilled about this as I hate confined spaces and also being trapped in a space where rats could appear with no escape route. It was tight, dusty and was no wider than my shoulders. There was no rats, but I have it in my mind that rats live in attics and behind walls :D
Even thought it was slightly unnerving being in such a confined space, it was a strange feeling knowing I was in an area of the house where nobody had been for 100 years. I knew this as I found a newspaper from December 7th 1907 from when the house was built. Some of the things in the paper included a section for jobs and an article on the building of a new extension for a factory which was nearby the house. The factory is now a housing estate and all the people who took the jobs will all be dead. It is strange reading a little piece of history. There was a job for a clean and intelligent boy as a bakery delivery assistant. He must be punctual and be able to do mental arithmetic. I would like to know who actually ended up doing the job. Title: Re: 1907 Newspaper Post by: Sark79 on September 06, 2006, 08:02:34 PM A local paper for the Irvine Valley. There was also a paper bag for a "General Store and Confectionares" probably left there by the people who built the houses
I gave them both to my Uncle as he is into anything about local history Title: Re: 1907 Newspaper Post by: thetank on September 06, 2006, 08:18:08 PM Was it pink or yellow?

I got the job. Now, don't be worrying overly about those rats. As a general rule, they only inhabit areas where there is a food supply. I wonder why (apart from the fact that they do carry some jolly nasty germs & stuff), almost all people loathe rats? (Is that Ratism?) Whereas Rats do rather like us, I believe. Title: Re: 1907 Newspaper Post by: Sark79 on September 06, 2006, 08:36:50 PM Was it pink or yellow? A very dusty yellow brownish colour. I think it was white at one point though :D Good to hear you got the job tikay. My fear of rats comes from a TV show I once watched, in it there was a bit about Norwegian Roof Rats. It would be my luck that one of these rats moved here in 1907 and has been living happily with his family behind the wall for the last 100 years. They are very large rats Title: Re: 1907 Newspaper Post by: Jon MW on September 07, 2006, 08:23:33 AM I've done a fair bit of family history research - and some of this has involved going through old (mainly 19th century) newspapers.
They are fascinating to read, even the bits that were mundane at the time - like the job adverts - have a whole different complexion because they are so far back. They may have filled the job in 1907, but they night find it difficult to fill the job with a 16 year old today, who could meet all the requirements, especially no 3.(punctual) Blonde offspring excepted of course!!!!! 8) |
