I'm asking as i have had set over set 3 times in the last 7 hours and got my arse kicked each time. lost the lot, its been one of those great nights that turns to tradgedy by the time morning comes, so how can i stop going broke on these sets?


Ok just reread that and i realise i stuck a mild bad  beat story in there, and i sould like a whiney bitch, money in the tin.

the amount of money you dont win trying to not go broke is far in excess of the money you save the times you avoid going broke, just embrace the swings for what they are.

I don't see how you can.  If there's a higher card on the board and someone reraises you, are you really going to fold?  Sets are difficult to spot for me too, I really don't know how you can expect to be beind to another set.  Chances of having two turn up are pretty slim, just damn unfortunate when they do.  If there is a pair on the board that's higher than my set, then I would reconsider, but that's probably the only time.

Have to agree with ace2m - more often than not i stick the chips in (though hopefully not go broke!) but there have been occasions in tournaments where i have laid it down but normally its been a really scary board early in the tournament when i've limped into pots and haven't invested that much. If i'm holding  Ts Tc and the board comes  9d Td Jd, the first person to speak goes all in and its me to act and i still have 3 people behind me to act then i would probably pass.

i would guess that the figure in cash games for going broke would be a bit higher than in tournaments (apart from the first hour in a rebuy) but i would say about 90-95% the chips go in.

(the secret is in tournaments to build up a big enough stack so that when this situation occurs you have much more chips than your opponent so the loss doesnt cripple you and you can carry on playing your a-game :)up)

Sorry guys it was in cash games, not tourneys, if it was tourneys I could handle it, the cash games are a killer as you just get your stack working again you get a situation like this and boom back to square one, reload in to the account, all the hours of work gone because of a situation you cant escape.

You're going broke unless, and it a total stretch, it's a multi-way hand with tight solid players and all the chips are flying in on a harmless flop with no draws. Then maybe, just maybe you can let it go, but I really wouldn't advise it...

i disagree. on a non scarey board with BOTTOM set vs the whole table i will still bust for a buyin. middle set is huge, if ur not going to get ur cash in and lose to oversets every now and then you wont maximise profits in the long run.

I know I am seeing the hand through to the end with a set also, It was jus on the night inquestion i had hit set over set so many times and managed to bust each time, The most painfull part was I had started to claw back some of my losses each time it happened.

I guess its just a Variance thing, if the board is scary then i am considering the laydown, otherwise its get my money in and pray the hand stands up.

try playing a level or 2 lower but multitable. gradually play more tables (not outside ur comfort zone) and this will decrease your variance. when you run well over all your tables (2, 3 or 4) then you will see and nice upswing, but (assuming you are beating the level regularly) when you take beats or set over set coolers you have other tables to buffer the down swing.
