Title: QQ, did i play this fishy?
Post by: Royal Flush on September 12, 2006, 07:51:03 PM
£300 Freezeout, 5000 chips. I was up to about 8k and my oppo was on over 14k. He is a well know lag, not a muppet lag either, a very good player.

I was in the BB with QQ, Mateyboy raises in EP to 125 on 25-50 I decided to re-raise to 500 and he called. The flop came Kc 5d 5h, I fancied I was ahead but i thought a check raise or check call was the optimum move. He checked behind.

The turn came the 6d I checked again and this time mateyboy fired in a bet of 1200, I decided to go with a raise and see if he has the King, I made it 3000 total, he flat called pretty quickly. At this point i thought he might of picked up a FD, i cant think of any hand he calls with quickly! (other than the fd)

The river came Ks

What should i do?

Ok, i'm going to be brave, check - call because he doesn't have you on the king. If you really had the king i think you would have bet the turn.

This is a tough spot. The pot is 3400 (roughly) and you have 6300 left. I think I weak bet on the river of around 1500 would be reraised heavily and then you have an even tougher decision.  I think he is playing either a slow king (dont think so) or a pocket pair JJ or TT. I dont think he has aces as I think he would have put a small stab on the flop or not flat called the turn.

A check from you and I would expect a bet of around 2500 from him. The king either gave him the nuts (except for 55 of course) or led him to believe his two pair is good. I would hope for less then a pot sized pot after checking. And then call.

I may be wrong though ;goodvevil; :D

so you dont think he should even check first?

Its not impossible that the river goes check/check!

I check called a 2,025 bet.

Should i have played this hand diffrently though?

he really doesn't look like he's checking it down. but i don't see how you can check/call here. yes the pots big but i see this as a losing play in the long run and you're gonna be left with very few chips. i might check-raise all-in. he'd lay down aces if he had them this way. and you're no further behind than before if you were on the flop on the river..

Post by: NoflopsHomer on September 12, 2006, 10:37:37 PM
Leading out on the turn would be better I think, you get raised, you're behind, it's cheaper than the check/raise. You get called, see what he does on the river and go from there. A 2nd king on the river would still make it less likely for him to have one in his hand.

when the river 2 pairs have you got in your mind, before checking to him, what he'll bet if he's filled up and what hell fire out on a busted flush draw?

I would have flatcalled the turn. If I don't put him on the King, then I'm only really worried about an Ace and would like to get more out of him.

I'd value the bet the River. If he checked the King on the flop, then ah well.

I would normally lead the turn but i was concerned he would raise me.

I thought a check raise would stop him being able to outplay me but then he called me!

when the river 2 pairs have you got in your mind, before checking to him, what he'll bet if he's filled up and what hell fire out on a busted flush draw?

He would bet the same either way, its what makes this git difficult to play!

I think you telegraphed your hand a bit with your preflop reraise.

LOL Nice hand.

I agree leading out on the turn is the way to go.

You find out much more about his hand by what he does here in response.

Fair enough imo, you gotta try find out if he has that King!

Have levelled myself into thinking this thread is a level.

But it is from 2006 so maybe flushy was a giant fish then? along with everyone on blonde?! clarification pls.

sick bump btw.

lol I think everyone in the world was a massive fish in 2006 mate but very happily this includes Flushy, this thread is evidence of that.

My fav part is that he raises to find out if he has the King, then the guy calls, then Flushy still doesn't include the King in his range.

No, WSOP main has so much value because loads of fishes enter it...quite a few through sats and quite a few because they think they have a big edge over the other 6400 guys playing it.

I think poker, like anything else gets more and more solved as time goes along, back in 2006 people (not just the fish, but everyone) prolly hadn't worked out some things about poker that we now all take as stnd, doesn't make anyone "terrible" just the times they were playing in, remember when everyone thought the world was flat?

and just like anything else the guys that figured stuff out first got paiiiiiiiiiiiiid

Flushy, would jam the river for value then snap fast forward to 2011 when you dont care what cards At-It Bradley has, maybe win the HU vs Farha on the way :P

Just because everyone plays what they consider optimally these days doesnt make it so, just because they talk to 35 other people that all like to think they are brilliant and do the same as well doesnt make it so.

I reckon it's pretty possible that in 25 years time young online sicko's - possibly even tanned, in good physical shape and all have girlfriends, will look at some of the stuff we do and think is advanced optimal play and laugh and mock us, bemoaning their misfortune at not being able to play in 2010 when they would all be millionaires no doubt.

i have another theroy as well. i play with a lot of young blackbelt players who have a certain style that i dont agree with and playing terrible imo. channing gets moved to the table and stacks em off one by one playing pretty impressive stuff and looks at em all and just says "you played it right and just got unlucky".  ;)
