Title: Chupa Chups or chooopa chooops
Post by: Snatiramas on September 20, 2006, 05:40:20 PM
Now why I start this I have no idea as it always always ends up with a row along the lines of is a Jaffa Cake a cake or a biscuit. Now that one has been discussed on here but I don't think this one has

Question
Do you pronounce the popular lolipops Chups chups as in the "uh" sound
or Chooopa chooops using the deeper ooooooo note.

I do have an email from the companies marketing dept. but what do they know

enjoy

'Uh' is the correct version (would never have considered the other one in a million years.

'Ugh' was my response to seeing their logo on a Sheffield Wednesday shirt a few years ago, but that's just a good old football rivalry kind of thing!

No idea on the lollypops, but I am quite sure that Glenmorangie rhymes with orangey after a similar e-mail from their marketing department.

It's obviously 'choops' and I would stake money on it.

Jen bought a bizarrely-named blue lollipop the other day. Imagine my surprise when, right in the middle of Tesco, she announced to me "I want a Flick'n'Lick".

Having intensely deliberated on this issue for around half an hour, I think it would make sense for the confectionary in question to have the oooo sound in the correct pronunciation of their name.

After all, when enjoying the lollypop for its intended function (sucking the s**t out of it) your lips will be forced into a similar position they would be in if you were saying their name. ooooo
This psychic connection will help sell more lollys perhaps, you say it, you want it.

So although I always called them Chuba chubs in my yooooooth, my guess is that the boffins over at the factory suggest that they are to be correctly referred to as chooopa chooops.

Chooooppa

Oranjeboom, Oranjeboom...its a lager not a tune.... and to think a marketing agency got paid for that one in 1984.

Meanwhile, I am pondering why a 12 pack of single twix fingers costs more than 6 two finger individually sold packs

I think I'd better call the Samaritans

It's choopa choops.  I'm sure that's how it was pronounced in the TV ads too.

Holsten Pils "good but not that good" did for the beer what Ratner did for retail jewellery.

I seem to remember that even the adverts couldn't get their minds around it.

The early ads pronounced it 'Choopa Choops', that's what i'm basing my decision on. Then, all of a sudden, they brought out a new range of ads which utilised the 'Chups' pronunciation.

It is spelled 'Chups' after all. But I started with choops, so choops it is.

It is definitely chooooopa chooooooops....................the company who manufacture them are Spanish. Imagine my surprise when the next set of adverts called the Chupa chups. I almost never ate them again on the basis of I was not sure how to order them without causing embarrasment to myself.
