Title: Best Broadband
Post by: ACE2M on October 04, 2006, 09:49:16 AM
Having finally exchanged on my new house i will be re entering the broadband world (online poker) next week.

Whats the best deal about at the momentl? I like my sky tv also, has anyone taken up their service? Is it any good?

check out www.adslguide.org - they have decent reviews on providers and you can compare services there.

I think the 2mb Sky broadband is active, but not the 10mb one - not 100% sure though.

There seems to be a lot of bad reviews on Sky Broadband but I would expect it's just teething problems.  I think if you are only after a low usage (for poker and general surfing) then you can't really go far wrong with free broadband (if you are on Sky TV) but if you want the faster services and are asking something of your broadband, then it may be worth looking elsewhere or waiting.

I'm on NTL at home and Demon at work and I've never really had any problems with either.  Both companies have good tech support for when you do get the odd thing.  Can't complain with either.

Happy housemoving :)

grrrr...don't get NTL..they are evil.

I am taking up BT next week (moving this friday and unless one of my new neighbours has an un-secured wireless connection I won't have any BB for a week :( ) they can get you BB within 5 days of your move (which is pretty fast) and I am reading loads of good reviews about their BB (we all know their customer service is terrible..but I don't need those guys if the BB itsself is fine)

I'm currently with Bulldog and have had an excellent service so far, I've not needed to contact customer service so I can't give an opinion on that area but the Broadband itself has been unfaultable (8Mb+ and it hasn't dropped once yet) They also provide me a great value phone package (local and national calls + 8Mb unlimited BB for £30)

Before Bulldog I was with Tiscali and also had no problems, the only reason I changed was to get the 8Mb package which they didn't offer.

is that £30 + the cost of a BT line?

No, there is no BT line cost as everything goes through Bulldog, they are the complete service provider.

lol a couple of years ago (really just 3) everyone would have been happy with 2 meg.

unless you download tremendous amounts of stuff or you like to bet horses in running in 5 furlong sprints..2 meg is fine for most people.

3 years ago most people couldn't even get 2Mb! If you are mainly using it for browsing the web and poker you wouldn't even notice a difference. I think when I moved here Bulldog said I would get 2Mb+, but it's well over 8 instead. I'm not going to complain......  :D

No idea tbh Boldie, I've not received anything to say as such. But, that doesn't mean that they haven't lol.

NO, Bulldog is now owned by Pipex.

I have been with Bulldog for 2 years now, cant fault the service - I think it has only been down once (for about 2 hours) in that whole time.

Their customer support is pants though - but with a service as good as it is, who cares!!

Right, I spoke to someone a while ago who told me Bulldog stopped taking on new customers to make sure their current customer got a good service while they were going to expand their existing service so they could take new customers on.

If they are back in business BT can kiss my arse...I have heard nothing but good things about bulldogg and will give them a call tonight.

I'm also with NTL and have experienced no problems with there broadband service. The only thing you need to hope for with NTL is that you don't ever require any help from their customer service department as ironically for a communications business they are pants at communicating and assisting their customers. BT are just as bad. I'm sure they spend 99% of their budget on marketing and advertising for new customers and work on the principle of sod the existing ones.

I recall Bulldog were on the "Tonight" programme. It was about the mass failure to provide it's heavily advertised service, a bit like last nights "talk talk" on watchdog.

Bulldog were on Watchdog a while back too.  Like all these companies, I'm sure they are ok once everything is up and running.   The only thing I didn't like with Bulldog is that you have to have them take over the phone line and I'm happy with my current service.  No problem if you are just moving of course.   NTL are only bad with general CS, in fact, they are appauling but the tech support is great.

I just switched to Sky Broadband, so I'm crossing my fingers, toes and everything else!

So far, so good though - it's 13-14M downstream and they even threw in a free router (which I didn't need, but meant I can give the old one to my Dad).

Best of all, the pesky interruptions I experienced with F2S seem to be a thing of the past. Although the internet has been a bit sticky today... not sure why.

The only small snaggle was the customer service I experienced in setting up the whole thing; the disc they sent me failed to set the system up properly so I spent two hours on the phone negotiating with a guy who was going through the troubleshooting manual almost as if he'd never read the thing before - before he eventually gave up and passed me on to his superior (who was actually a techie support guy) who of course figured out what was wrong right away, and the whole mess was then sorted out in under ten minutes...

I'm with Pipex and have been for years. I pay £22.99 and get unlimited 8MB broadband. Not once have I ever had a problem with anything.

Problem with Sky broadband is its not unlimited bandwith. Even though it says it is, in the terms it says its subject to its "fair use policy." If you download films or excessive poker shows then you will quickly rack up the bandwith and they will moan at you!

I've had Sky broadband for the last 2 weeks (mid package £5 month)and it's lost it's connection every single night .........in fact it's running dog slow at the moment . I've called for tech assitance for the past 3 night's & early hour's of the morning and their network is always down ...........lol.

Stay well clear !!!!!!!!, I had Wannadoo/Orange for the past 2 years with no problem's but like you i recently moved and like you thought this would be a good time to switch.

I have no confidence in it at all to play poker as i keep getting cut off for about 15 mins ....when i'm usually chip leader  :D.
Allright i'm never chip leader but you get my point .

In actual fact i can't believe i've been on for 72 mins and i haven't been cut off y..............................

After 3 weeks of messing about Bulldog just called me to say that they couldn't get me going as I didn't have an active BT line (surprise surprise - I did tell them I just moved in....).

To get set up I either need to cough up £100 to install a Bulldog line (which I now for a fact they just rent off BT anyway so no "installation" needed) or get BT to reactivate my line.  Only trouble with that option is that BT will charge me and hold me to a one month minimum contract over there.

Grrrrr

How odd, basically that is the same that happened to me when I moved in, but Bulldog contacted BT and arranged for an engineer to call out and install the line (there was previously NTL here) BT did muck about for about a week/10 days (during which I leached off the neighbours wireless  :D)  but they did install it, at no charge to me from either company.

Bulldog uses both BT and the cable and wireless network. if you are ina  C&W area you are in...it is by far the best network in the UK.
I have heard of the BT one causing some problems every now and again.

Whatever you do don't get Blueyonder its cacktastic. Used to lose our service all the time but recently they have come up with a new development, we can access all sites on the internet but cant connect to any poker sites. I think its some secret government pilot scheme to follow the yanks in banning poker. You have been warned, the truth is out there.

EDIT: Why is it your connection only drops out when your going well deep in MTT's? Never when you lose most of your stack early and were looking forward to watching some telly anyway.

I mainly play HU games online (the 10 and 20$ shootout things)...very nasty with NTL when it keeps freezing as you lose connection but can't reconnect within 30 seconds..so you're sitting out and all chips are gone.
