Title: Still giggling.... Post by: TightEnd on October 07, 2006, 02:10:16 PM My daughter is 7 and, even though I am biased, a real sweetie
A little note came through in her school bag on Thursday night from the teacher asking if she could have a quick word with me when I picked her up on Friday. This seemed a little odd, as she's not the kind that gets into trouble but anyway... I dutifully waited for the teacher as the rest of class filed out on Friday afternoon, whilst my daughter played in the classroom Teacher: "I wanted to have a word with you because Kristie keeps getting her times tables wrong, and we can't understand it" Me: "Well she knows them all with me, no problems" Teacher "It surprised us too, as she seems very able with everything else" Me "Can I see her work?" Teacher "Of course " Teacher " As you can see she is doing her four times table, yet when we say please write down four times your table you can see she writes down 24, not 16" Teacher "Similarly you can see her answer to ten times her table is 60, not 40" Me "Well let me try her now, Kristie, whats 4 x 4?" Kristie, straight away "16" Me "10 x 4?" Kristie, "40" Teacher "Well Kristie, why are you writing down these answers?" Krisite "Well you ask four times your table Mrs Collier. I count up everyone sitting round my table and do my sums" Me "How may people sit round your table?" Kristie "6" Teacher, giggling "So you do four times 6 for example?" Me, stifling a laugh "Next time can you write down four times the times table you are learning?" Kristie, looking at me like I am slightly mad "Yes dad, but the teacher must ask the question correctly!" Heaven knows what she'll be like when she's 16! Title: Re: Still giggling.... Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: Div on October 07, 2006, 02:33:21 PM Just be thankful she didn't give him an answer that took into account implied odds, stack sizes, and position at the table :D
Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: thetank on October 07, 2006, 02:34:21 PM That's brilliant.

naughty teacher too lol Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: Poppet7 on October 07, 2006, 03:16:45 PM That's so funny - and sweet!
Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: AndrewT on October 07, 2006, 03:27:01 PM 'please write down four times your table'? - no wonder she's getting things wrong if the teacher is using such ambiguously worded sentences.
Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: Claw75 on October 07, 2006, 03:27:34 PM that's just the sort of thing I would have done when I was a kid.
I have to say I didn't understand what the teacher was asking when I read through your post - thought it was a typo at first!! And why on earth did the teacher just not ask Kristie herself where the answers were coming from instead of leaving you a note?? Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: AndrewT on October 07, 2006, 03:31:16 PM Reading it again I can see she just misheard. Ignore my last post - maybe the teacher isn't an idiot after all.

Should have asked that really! and I think the question was worded that way because different kids are learning different tables at the same time. Title: Re: Still giggling.... Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: MrsLime on October 07, 2006, 04:47:34 PM Caveat: MrsLime is not correcting your daughter's grammar!
But, you would do well to encourage everyone to call it 'multiplication' instead of 'times', lest it lead to bad habits. When learning algebra, we were continually picked up for saying things like "Times it by 5". The reason is that 'times' is a preposition, but NOT a verb. Title: Re: Still giggling.... When learning algebra, we were continually picked up for saying things like "Times it by 5". The reason is that 'times' is a preposition, but NOT a verb. It's the teachers fault for teaching them to say 'times' - possibly not the same teacher - instead of multiply. Poor use of language when teaching maths in primary school can cause all sorts of problems and misunderstandings at secondary school. Title: Re: Still giggling.... So Comma crew membership forms in the post chaps! Title: Re: Still giggling.... Post by: thetank on October 07, 2006, 06:39:37 PM I have to disagree.
Get kids in primary schools to start using words like multiply instead of times and they may go forth and do so...... ::) Title: Re: Still giggling.... Get kids in primary schools to start using words like multiply instead of times and they may go forth and do so...... ::) whereas they may end up instead checking out the sceduled t.v for the coming week :dontask: |
