Title: Cat film reviews Post by: JungleCat03 on October 09, 2006, 05:21:28 PM While I've been trying to give up smoking, I've holed myself up watching films. Thought I'd give my views on these good films I've seen recently rated 1-5 for applause.
Donnie Darko - Offbeat science fiction/ mystery film. Well acted and scripted. Thought provoking and absorbing film that will have you thinking about it long after it finishes. ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; The Thing - Good horror film for the buffs. Reminiscent of alien in many ways. Gruesome special effects. Sense of isolation and paranoia well realised. ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; Brazil - As with all terry gilliam work, wacky and crazy. Wierd vision of orwellian future of state beurocracy gone mad. Enjoyably zany film with a good cast. ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; and a half The Machinist - Wow, almost worth seeing just to see the effort christian bale must have put into preparing for this role. His almost anorexic frame contrasts starkly with his muscly portrayal of batman a few years later. The film itself is good. It's been described as a cross between memento and fight club, and it's fa ir to say if you enjoyed those films you'll enjoy this. Pacing slightly slow in parts but a good film which mystery lovers will enjoy. ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; and a half Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: Sark79 on October 09, 2006, 05:23:47 PM The machinist was odd, it is hard to believe it is the same actor that plays Batman . He is so thin in that movie
Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: JungleCat03 on October 09, 2006, 05:28:17 PM Yes, his appearance is shocking in the film stark. I think it helps build the character well.
Christian Bale is one of the best actors in hollywood imo. Was great in american psycho, batman and this amongst others. Wales' greatest export since tom jones? Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: I, Zimbra on October 09, 2006, 05:33:18 PM Brazil is one of those films that gets better every time you watch it.
Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: MrsLime on October 09, 2006, 06:01:13 PM I thought this thread was going to be reviews of films with cats in them. How disappointing.
Oh well. If you can drag yourself out to the cinema, 'Little Miss Sunshine' is really very excellent. Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: JungleCat03 on October 09, 2006, 06:03:55 PM I liked it, it's a wierd mix of bleakness and comedy. Robert de niro is great as the terrorist, in fact all the cast play their roles really well.
It's absolutely brimming with little touches and details jam packed in every corner so i can imagine how it's good to rewatch. Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: Claw75 on October 09, 2006, 06:15:19 PM I thought this thread was going to be reviews of films with cats in them. How disappointing. Me too. I was particularly interested to see if 'The Aristocats', the first film I saw at the cinema, had received the thumbs up. Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: MrsLime on October 09, 2006, 06:22:21 PM I have 'The Cat Returns' on DVD but have not watched it as it is a Chinese version and I can't speak or read Chinese.

hope this helps Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: Royal Flush on October 09, 2006, 06:52:09 PM What about "the cat from outer space" that film is the nuts.
Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: JungleCat03 on October 09, 2006, 07:08:25 PM Apologies for the ambiguous title. Now i read it back i can see how it is misleading.
The cat film genre is quite underdone. All too often hollywood producers regard cats as just support actors or even *spit* mere props. Fkin get it sorted. Here's some ideas to kick start those lazy producers. The Feline King. There's something about Tiddles. Paws. Catman. Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: Claw75 on October 09, 2006, 07:09:30 PM Catman. they already gave him his own TV show didn't they? Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: JungleCat03 on October 09, 2006, 07:15:14 PM I'm not sure.
I did think this guy might be a feline saviour when he appeared. Then i realised i had misread his name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo1w2Y4yj-8 Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: lazaroonie on October 09, 2006, 07:40:47 PM What about "the cat from outer space" that film is the nuts. actually went to the pictures to see that when it came out. 1977 ? The George cinema. A real cinema. None of yer fancy multiplex nonsense...Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: I, Zimbra on October 09, 2006, 08:44:52 PM The Aristocats?
Cat People? Catwoman? The Cat in the Hat? Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: Claw75 on October 09, 2006, 08:48:07 PM Cat Balou (sp?)

I never understood the ending and i don't think anybody has ever explained it clearly. I did enjoy it up til then though :D Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: Tonji on October 09, 2006, 11:33:20 PM Donnie Darko - Offbeat science fiction/ mystery film. Well acted and scripted. I did enjoy it up til then though :D I've watched it 3 times, still not sure what its really about, but its a great film I think the film is left intentionally ambiguous which to me kind of adds to its appeal. I don't think it's necessarily possible to work out an absolute meaning to the film but some elements are explained in the book "The Philosophy of Time Travel" which is mentioned several times in the film. I liked the film so much as the direction is really crisp and sharp, the music enhances the mood throughout and the acting is spot on. Even Patrick Swayze (prob spelt wrong) shines! The first five minutes I was thinking, 'What a load of rubbish'; but it turned out to be amazing, slightly disturbing film. Those extended scenes, trying not to give anything away but I'm thinking the chicken dream and the Algerian's final scene -- wow. Excellent cinema. Is The Piano Teacher any good? (I assume you mean Caché by Hanake and not Cache about four women robbing a bank!) Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: tantrum on October 10, 2006, 05:21:06 PM Quote (I assume you mean Caché by Hanake and not Cache about four women robbing a bank!) Caché -could not find the symbol on my keyboard. Piano Teacher is an excellent psychological drama. Haneke's first film was Funny Games which took the horror genre to new levels of (non) entertainment. What I love about Haneke's films, is that they are so economical with dramatic devices, but their precision is almost faultless. His character development is full of humanity and there is no place for two dimensions. Anyway I hope you will enjoy it. Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: MrsLime on October 10, 2006, 05:40:29 PM I'm on a PC and to get the é character I held down 'Alt' and the typed out '0233' on the numeric keypad. I just learned how to do that today. :-)
I'll be sure to check out some more Haneke [ah, that's how you spell it] at the next available opportunity! Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: KeithyB on October 10, 2006, 05:57:35 PM I always respected the acting talents of Mr Jinks the cat from Meet The Parents / Fockers and have been disappointed by his lack of work since. :'(
Personally I’d love to see a Fockers 3, perhaps entitled Further Fockerising even if it merely consisted of 90 minutes of Mr Jinks flushing the toilet, the baby whispering assssssss ---- hooooole all interspersed with numerous references to “little” fockers or “happy” fockers. rotflmfao That would be bliss for me ( as in happy not Dee ) but I suspect probably few others would want to enter this particular circle of trust! ;surrender; Title: Re: Cat film reviews Post by: I, Zimbra on October 10, 2006, 07:23:21 PM I have been telling people about 'Funny Games' for years, mostly with no result... ;tightend;

Seeing as all the film buffs are gathered here, can anyone help me identify this film. I saw it a while ago on BBC2. Very surreal film, involving a crazy ginger assassin(in a suit i think), at one point there was a random dog with a human face and the portraits in the house had duck heads on them. The plot can't really be described as it didn't really seem to make sense. Now about an hour before this film started I had been indulging in nefarious activities involving mushrooms, so it is possible i dreamed the whole thing up. But if I didn't, does this bizarre film sound familiar to everyone? But if I didn't, does this bizarre film sound familiar to everyone? Yes, this is very detailed description of the film. Do you remeber at least what country of origin this film was from? And as u say about your activities prior to watching the film, it is possible that the ginger assassin was not ginger but blonde, dog was in fact human who happend to have hairy chest, and the whole film was a musical called 'House of Ducks' Thanks MrsLime for a tip:) |
