Title: Recycling Question
Post by: Sark79 on October 10, 2006, 02:44:18 PM
Most of us have to split our household rubbish into different groups - this is normally paper, general rubbish, tins + glass and also garden waste.  I was wondering what  we get out of this and surely someone if making money from this somewhere down the line?.  I know we are suppose to have a reduction on our council tax each year, but doesn't this increase most years?

The re-development of previous industrial areas often use compost made from garden waste. This comes from us, but aren't we supplying this  and saving somebody money. The same goes for tins and paper, etc.

I am not complaining and I am all for recycling.  The ideas brought in over the last few years to increase recycling are absolutely excellent and I would much rather my household waste was put to good use rather than finish up on a landfill somewhere.

But I am just curious as to what we get from this?   There are the obvious things such as a cleaner environment, better living conditions for future generations and a nicer place to live. But I am wondering what we gain financially by separating our rubbish and doing another persons job .  It is a job that I am very happy to do and wouldn't want anything for it, I even take my plastic cartons to the local super market to recyle them that way as my local council doesn't collect plastic.  I was just wondering what happens to all the profits? and what do we get in return

1 - It goes to fat men in suits.

2 - Naff all.

The only reason to recycle is to clear your conscience. don't expect payment!

There's always someone making out of things that go on, but it is for the greater good.   What you need to be doing is coming up with a new 'green' method of doing something, then you'll get goverment contracts (if you patient it properly and they don't rip you off) and you'll do well out of it.

I don't mind recycling and I'm getting better at it.  I'm not particually happy about the bins every two weeks thingy because of having food waste lying around for a couple of weeks, but apart from that, it's got to be done, we get a cleaner planet for it.

If they find a way of making recycled toilet paper more comfy then I'll be happy ;grr;

what is depressing is the lecture we get on recyling with various different bins , bottle banks etc and then you see the lorry pick it up ..it empties all the bottles and cans in to the same vehicle ::)..way to motivate us by example - currently the same thing happens with blue and brown bin waste in most places.

so the money spent producing the plastic bottle banks and recycying stations...plastic being enviromentally unfriendly to begin with is wasted for the time being.

there is no use in having blue, brown grey bins of different varieties if the infrastructure to do something with them at the other end is not there..it demotivates people and fails before it gets off the ground.

particularly if the councils are using charging by amount and type of waste(in the pipeline) as an incentive to recylce..it doesnt add up.

i`m all for it but as usual its ill thought out and done with any eye to raising council revenue as opposed to reducing council bills

Of course the fortnightly collections of normal rubbish will be introduced during the colder part of the year so that smells etc won't be an issue until the weather gets warmer. By such time, of course, the new service will then be too established to change back!  ;grr;  More progress!

Happy to sort my rubbish ( and do) for recycling any way the council wishes providing that a) they subsequently deal with the recycled items properly and b) maintain weekly collections for "normal" waste.

Here in Cornwall we always thought recycling was trading your old bike in for a new one.

So disheartning to see this.

Im my area the council increased the bills by 20%, to pay for their recycling scheme, and a new contractor to sort the waste( old company was fine, and i expect a few brown envelopes got passed about).
Then, the recycling vans turn up whenever they feel like it. Different days or weeks to those advertised. Got annoyed with lots of rubbish in different boxes hanging around the house so don't bother sorting it out anymore. All goes in the black bags now.
