firstly, excuse the complete technophobe language :D

Anyway, we have three PCs here, two laptops and a desktop.  For some reason or other, the laptop I use doesn't seem to be able to pick up our wireless broadband connection anymore (it was fine this morning, then just stopped).  The other laptop and the desktop computer are fine.  The laptop can still connect with no problems via a cable. 

When searching for wireless networks with the laptop it is either finding none, or finding a different network altogether, which the other computers aren't recognising.  Could this be some sort of interference problem?  Mr Claw has tried changing the frequency (or something) but no joy.

Any ideas?

You haven't switched off the wireless on the front have you? Some laptops have switches to turn it off...

have you tried to reboot your router?

Is the router set to broadcast its SSID because if it isn't, it will be invisible?

Yep - tried all that.  there's no problem with the router because the other PCs are picking up the network fine, and there's no problem with the laptop as it is picking up the other wireless network (which presumably is a neighbours).

thanks for the advice - I'll leave it to hubby to see what he can do (although so far he is flummoxed!)

if you are using the laptop on battery power check the power saving options you might find that you have the wireless turned off

easy way to check if this is the problem is to plug it in and see if you can find it with mains power

cheers Ironside - yes it's plugged into the mains - nearly always is.  It was working fine this morning, then I went out for the day and it wasn't working when I got back.  We can only conclude that it must be some kind of interference from this other network we are picking up which we've never picked up before.  Funnily enough although the one laptop is seeing it, the other computers aren't ???

Double click on the network that it can see and delete it from the list.

If you can see your network on there, move it to the top of the list

tried that - still not seeing our network at all...

Check the ip address of your laptop. If its correct try and ping the ip address of your router.

Change the frequency that the network is on.

Hit it with a hammer.

well, we've tried everything other than the hammer already.  Still no joy today.  Tis a pain.  Thanks for all your suggestions - I think Mr Claw will have to ring the techies

Sounds very much like a hardware problem, try a RF card in your cardbus slot.

well - it's fixed.  Despite changing the frequency yesterday having no effect Mr Claw changed it again and all is hunky dory  :)up
