I know a guy that I used to work with who picks and eats wild mushrooms .  Today I went out with him and with the dogs and we picked a bunch.  I had mentioned last week to a group of friends that there was a lot of wild mushrooms this year compared to other years, he offered to show me which types were ok to eat. 

Tonight's dinner is pasta in a wild mushroom sauce.  The sauce looks good so far and it is currently boiling on the stove. I tasted a little bit and it just tastes like supermarket mushrooms. I have not had any strange things happen, so they must be ok and I have no signs of obvious illness yet  :D

I thought it best to cook for only me, just in case I have got it wrong.

Does anyone have any experiences with wild mushrooms? ( legal )

I have just eaten it and it was very nice. I sprinkled some grated cheese over the top of it and put loads of pepper on it.  I love pepper and put it on almost everything I eat.

There's loads of mushrooms kicking about that you can just eat. I think you have to be very careful though, there's some that look similar to ok ones but are dodgy.

I don't like mushrooms anyway, but if I did, I think I'd just settle for the supermarket ones.

The best ones to pick are the little tiny ones (but not deathcap ones). Best prepared in a soup, or you can dry them and enjoy them that way.

They've never been illegal. BTW. Until a recent law made illegal the preperation of them. You could buy them at the local market until early this year!

Hmmm, I'd just buy some from the shop...safer!

I think they're now classed as Class A drugs.  So it is illegal to possess, supply, import, etc.

Import? They grow here naturally :) Became illegal to possess fresh ones on one sad Sunday in July, 2005. Although dried ones have always been illegal (contrary to my above comment, it was the fresh state that wasn't illegal).

My mushrooms were legal and just tasted like supermarket mushrooms.  When I used to work in greenhouses, some of the mushrooms that grew there were massive.  I never used to take an interest in them and usually just dug them out as weeds.  My friend who worked with me was the guy who helped me pick them today. He always collected them and took them back home for dinner.  He loved them

The best mushroom I ate was in a London restaurant last month, near the Fifty Casino.  Very juicy with garlic butter.  Yum.

One of my favourite foods now.  I used to hate them as a child.

I always remember Jo Brand saying that Mushrooms were her favourite food because they have absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever.

There is a forrest in East Kilbride called Whiteleys ( sp? ) and in there are loads of mushrooms.  I cycle there often and see so many different types of mushrooms.  They are really interesting things

No, I don't think so Mad.    I see alot on the sides of fallen trees, they are brown and in clusters.  I really need to get myself a camera  :D.   What is the study of mushrooms called?

have you seen the programmes on friday on trees, forget what it was called, but on BBC2, at 7.30. Fascinating stuff, with 2 enthusiastic guys who love their job.

no ive not seen it but id like to because i adore trees. ive got photos of several trees of this type in 3 out of four seasons. here is another of some tall trees in callender

on the programme this week there was a tree they measured as the tallest in Britain as 64 metres, somewhere in Scotland, can't remember exactly where.
btw superb photos mad, I used to take photos of trees years ago, I'll have to find them.

I was just at Langlands Moss in EKB with my friend and his father and the dogs out  a walk.  It is a wooded area and there must be about 20  different species of mushroom.  We actually added about 1 hr onto the walk by getting lost, there were three paths about 4 miles into the  walk and only one of them was the correct one.  We decided on the wrong choice and after 60 minutes of walking came out at the same place we started from  :D .  I am sure I saw some of the famous Chanterelles today, but then again I am no expert. They looked like these

I saw a Lady on TV the other day who has a business selling mushrooms to restaurants. She plants the spores of mushrooms on fallen trees in a forest area near her home.  She makes a nice living from it
