Title: Laptop buying help please.
Post by: ripple11 on October 16, 2006, 04:11:04 PM
 Afternoon everyone,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop, (which will be 99% used for poker!),...and as I'm not techy minded at all, any pointers/advice/suggestions to what I should look out for??

Budget up to a grand I suppose.

Thanks for any help.

I have an Acer. It does ok for what I want it for. I actually decided on this laptop because I thought with a name like Acer, I would ACE online poker  :D .  My laptop must have been broken when I got it though because that hasn't happened. lol.  I know Nemesis likes Dell laptops and I have promised him to have a look at them next time I go laptop shopping

I'm thinking about getting one of the Dells that you can 4 table on with no overlap but it says

Quote
Please note that this system has a ExpressCard slot and support the ExpressCard format only. This system does not have a PCMCIA card slot.

Is the PCMthingy what you use to plug in a sim card to get mobile internet access?

Are there any laptops that you are able to 4 table VC/Blonde size tables or is this impossible due to their massive size?

If there is one piece of advice I could ever give you about buying a laptop its: DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER BUYING A DELL.

Title: Re: Laptop buying help please.
Post by: marcro on October 16, 2006, 06:21:15 PM
I would recommend getting a laptop with a 17 inch WUXGA screen.  This will allow you to easily see 4 tables without any overlap.  Dell and Sony produce them.

The great Nemesis recommended the two below laptops from Dell and have to say the top one is stunning - a fantastic choice IMO.

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/m1710?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/precn_m65?c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&s=dhs

As he told me at the time its the one he got Ram to buy(top one) - and obviously it comes with a guarantee that you will play like him :)

He also gave me the following advice which I followed;

Make sure you add these features:

WUXGA screen (you may want 17", you may not)

bluetooth

the most memory and hard drive capacity you can get (you wont be upgrading for a few years)

Never did say thanks Nem - thanks.

If you only gonna play poker and browse the internet stick to an Acer one, no point spending over 3-400 when you wont use/need the extra stuff.

as someone who sells laptops for a living, look for the following:

If possible look for the intel core duo processor, 1Gb RAM being the main 2. If you have money to burn there's now some with  2h Gb RAM approx £799 due in to where I work very soon..

In terms of reliability etc... we've had HP and FujitsuSiemens for a cpl of years without any significant problems

Title: Re: Laptop buying help please.
Post by: Jim-D on October 16, 2006, 11:12:14 PM
I've always been told that Toshiba were the nutz for reliability, I've had mine for 2 yrs with no problems what so ever.

Title: Re: Laptop buying help please.
Post by: amcgrath1uk on October 16, 2006, 11:19:27 PM
Toshiba's.... hmmmmm

I must say..The company I work used to sell them... we had one or 2 issues with them... tho through experience I know that customers do like them... built to last!! One other possibly to try is Gateway..got one myself.... some fantastic spec for approx £450 about at the mo

and err....anyone wanting to buy an Acer should shoot themselves 1st!! I've personally been on their tech support line for 9 hours plus attempting to sort issues out. NOT fun

Nemesis is a friend and I think it is sad that a guy who has given so much to this forum is barred at all.  People have quarrels, it is part of life.  Bolt and myself have had comments with each other, but we get on ok now  :D ( I think )  .   I like both Nem and the other person involved, I am sure they are able to sort this out themselves or just not talk to each other if they can't

I'd like to trade in my current Dell laptop and get one of those beautys, but have no idea how much my current one would be worth.  It was bought in December last year, specs are:

Dell Inspiron MXC051 Inter Pentium M processor 1.86 GHZ 781 MHZ
760 MB Ram
60 GB hard drive

Wireless enabled and DVD writer etc.  Any ideas how much it'd be worth?

Guys, If you want a moderated forum then you have to trust those that have to make the decisions to do so in the best interests of everyone and in the a way that is fair and consistent.

People arent suspended on a whim, and with respect no one is in possesion of all the facts APART from those who reached the decision.

O.k, fair enough, then let me just specify to anyone reading that i'm in possesion of all the facts as nemesis sees and understands the situation.

Ive conversed with him several times over the phone about it, both prior and subsequent to the mods becoming aware of any incident and IMO not only is he unequivicaly in the right with regards to the series of events that led to his suspension but in my own opinion he's been treated very poorly by those in positions of power in blonde, some of whom he thought of as freinds, very sad indeed and a great loss to blonde.

He was in fact posting on the open forum ... the fact that we deleted his post immediately may mean that not many saw it.

As for the last paragraph, that would be a decision that only Nem could make and it would be his decision and no one else can be held responsible if that is the case.

And for the record, I sincerely hope that wont be the case.

so then it stands to reason that if the falable human being is capable of bending the truth for the sake of personal benefit then those in charge of his suspension may harbour the propensity to be "ever so slightly bias" also?

I agree, although I think that for the entire group (mods and admin) to be guilty of this at the same time is stretching it a bit, and I don't see the personal benefit angle.

At the end of the day it comes down to Kev's earlier point, you trust us, or you don't.

Yea it is sad to see two members who I like having a quarrel like this.  We are all here for the same reason and that is to learn to be great poker players like tikay and Phil Ivey, it is sad if a disagreement gets in the way of peace on the forum.  It would be a shame if Smithy felt he couldn't post and also if Nem couldn't post.   I hate arguments, I am a bit of a nancy boy really  :D

I answered a forum response with''The Guns are coming out, and mine are bigger than snoops'' (meaning biceps)

Nem thought I was threatening him with a AK47 hence the Pm's.

The mods dont need to be sorting things like this out to be honest - and i apologise for them having to get involved - they have more important things to do!!!

Groan.....

Do you REALLY think The Mods - me included - enjoy suspending good, solid, Members of blonde?

Did we get it wrong? Maybe, maybe not. Who'll ever know?

Most of us - The Mods I mean - were desperately sad to have to take the actions we did - but if you were in possession of the facts we were - & it's UNLIKELY you were, as we had lengthy written evidence from several parties - you'd know we had no choice. We asked the guys to cool it, several times. We said "please, no more". It continued. Several Mods wrote PM's "come on guys, give it a rest". It went on, and on, The Mods spent hours & hours & hours trying to sort it, time that could have been usefully employed on positive things. Eventually, a line has to be drawn, whether we want to or not. As I said earlier, it's possible we got it wrong. And it's possible we did not. But we acted in good faith, after trying evey method we could to get the guys to chill out. Anyone that thinks we enjoyed all that palaver is not really thinking it through.

I, along with most other blondes, miss Nem greatly. (He sent me the Allen Carr "Give Up Smoking The Easy Way" Book which was damn kind of him). He has to decide whether to Post or not in future, that's his call. I hope he does, but who knows?

People keep saying he's a good guy. We never suggested otherwise. Others "like him". So do we. What's that gotta do with it?

It's a remarkable thing though, the assumption that suspending someone temporarily is easy, or pleasant, or fun.

It's done for a reason, to keep this Forum "just so". We ain't gonna ease our stance for anyone, we want blonde to be a certain sort of place. Those that knock us can knock all day & all night. We will remain a Moderated Forum, where civility, decent manners, respect, & decent morality take precedence. There are plenty of unmoderated Fora for those that don't respect such values, or who feel unable to stay within the boundaries of behaviour we have set.

Some days I almost feel like we have to apologise for keeping this place decent. We get accused of being "nicey-wicey". Like it's some kind of sin.....!

Such is life.

Membership is free, so that allows us to set the Rules.

Goodnight all, see you tomorrow.

PS - How on earth did we get from buying lappies to this?

Shame to hear thats the reason why Nem hasnt been about, ive missed a lot as ive moved house and they can t get my broadband working!
Anyway, im have no idea how the Mods operate on here but as ive moderated large gaming forums for a long time i would just say we use a yellow/red card sytem before we ban etc.
No idea how you guys do it but it works very well, issue there first yellow card and it stays on file for 4 weeks, get another yellow in that time and its a 2 week ban.
Just my thoughts ona very difficult debate because there is nothing worse than having to ban a top poster, I would put Nem in the top 5 posters on here.
