Title: Best PL Omaha strategy book for beginners, plees?
Post by: Mokers on September 07, 2005, 01:01:36 AM
I'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to this, but I want to broaden by horizons somewhat by learning the game of Omaha. I know some of you kind, learned gentleblondes will have had some experience with reading, or Omaha, or if you're special, both, so any suggestions for a starter book would be appreciated. Else I'll just swipe the first book off the top of Amazon's bestseller list. Tar.

There's a yellow one with just two cards on the cover. It's really straight forward and great for omaha begginers. Can't remember what the bloomin ell it was called tho.

I'm sure some1 can remember for me.

Good night all.

Sounds like Omaha Holdem Poker - The Action Game by Bob Ciaffone to me!

Very good book.

To be honest there aren't that many choices - Super System 2 has a section on it by Todd Brunson and there's a Q&A format book called 'How Good Is Your Pot Limit Omaha?'

There's a book by Lou Krieger and Mike Cappelletti (or something like that) that I've avoided like the plague after reading a review of it.  Its one of the few poker books I don't own!

Ciaffone is probably your best bet, although its not a complete beginners book as such.  However, as long as you know the basic rules of the game you should be fine (it also covers Hi/Lo)

Thanks. Since I'm relatively new to poker I've only picked up a few books on low-limit cash play, which is my main focus, and hadn't realised that Super System covered Omaha a bit as well. I fancy my NL Hold'em play enough, but I'm sure picking up SS2 couldn't hurt. I think I'll buy the Ciaffone text as well just to qualify for the Amazon Super Saver Delivery offer.

Super System 2 section by Lyle Berman has its critics and is probably more suited to deep stack PLO, not the relatively shallow stack capped buy in games you get online.

I like Reubens book "How good is Your PLO" amazon should have it. There is PLO mentioned in PL and NL Poker by Reuben and Ciaffione too

I must admit I struggled with berman in SS2

I'd recommend Ciaffone, for once!

Apologies - I said the SS2 section was Todd Brunson's, not Lyle Berman, in my original post!

'PL and NL Poker' by Reuben/Ciaffone is a great book and I'd recommend it.  Its not PLO specific, its aimed at all forms of 'big bet' poker.

The Krieger book I referred to was actually another Omaha 8 book (by Krieger and Tenner).  I've dug out the review I read of it which is linked below as its actually quite funny - the quote from the book is just painful reading!

The Ciaffone Omaha book is out of print, and second hand copies cost silly money on Amazon.

The good news is, I heard an interview with him a few weeks ago, in which he said he is working on a new edition for publication later this year.

The Reuben How Good Is Your Pot Limit Omaha (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1904468071/pokerpiqueand-21/202-7869333-1106223?creative=6394&camp=1406&link_code=as1) is a good book too - though if you are just starting out you might find the numbers he deals in a bit scary. Also, be aware it's more a situational book i.e. what should I do in the following position, rather than a tutorial approach.
