Title: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 29, 2006, 06:32:53 PM Good evening and welcome to Grosvenor Southampton, where the £500 Southern Masters is starting at this very moment...
A bigger turnout than I was expecting has turned out, leaving 68 players up for taking tomorrow off work should they make the final day. Included amongst them: Tikay (Tikay) Chili (Maria Demetriou) TightEnd (Richard Prew) Joe Grech James Dempsey (Flushy) Michael Greco A trend in caving to the players' will has continued - the structure underwent a pleasing last-minute change from a 45 minute clock and 7k in chips, to a full hour clock and 10k. I think Tikay might enjoy taking credit for that, but it's no problem to them here, what with a nicely manageable field and all. I thought that there must be one more player left who hadn't heard someone do that after an embarrassingly early Freezeout exit, but then the floor came and gave them chips... This must mean one of two things: a) It's a double chance freezeout (5k + 5k) or b) I was watching a cash game.

I am going to throw caution to the wind and try to show these two pictures of Richard Prew and Tikay (who are sat side-by-side on the table currently being dominated by Joe Grech)... It looks like they're having a kind of stare-off. Which they are. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: ripple11 on October 29, 2006, 07:12:24 PM Whats Tikay wearing?? :o ;D

Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 29, 2006, 07:31:24 PM Tikay is wearing that curious blend of 'could be some kind of sportswear' 'two shirts in one' clothing favoured by my little brother and most of the Backstreet Boys. I think powder blue suits him down to the ground, AND the curious badges could be added to without his noticing, I reckon.
Anyway, he's had a bit of a knock, slowplaying pocket Aces (admittedly) trying to lure in the guy with Jh 9d. Jack high flop, which Matey checked in the dark, and Tikay cleverly kept him in til he hit the 9s on the river. Still not had his second chance yet, though. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Pab on October 29, 2006, 07:46:49 PM Hi Jen, hope you are well,

Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 29, 2006, 07:52:05 PM Maria (pictured) has had a shaky start, playing, as she recounts it, "lots of mediocre hands, KQ, KJ, QJ, A9, and either missing or hitting and losing..." One top pair into a set of Sevens later, and she's down to 4,100 out of the full 10k. "I haven't smoked for three weeks," she says, "And I've never wanted one more than at this moment." I might go out and get her some patches.
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 29, 2006, 08:13:10 PM A break is coming up in about 15 minutes, at which point the Second Chance is awarded, ready or not, and that seems like a sensible time to go and count chips. I can say that James Dempsey already has 11,000 without his extra 5k, and looks pretty happy with himself. Jane said that he showed something even resembling discipline, when his AA saw a 4 5 7 flop, and knew to get out of the way of the 57 and 36 against him.
Most of the extra chips came when his slightly odd call of the 400 raised in late position from the small blind with Ac Ts came good - the flop was Jd 5h 3c and all three (or was it four?) players checked. The turn brought a Td, James checked and called the 1,500 bet at him, and then checked-called the 2,050 bet on the 4s river too. He beat Matey's Kd Qh, remarking, "That was quite cool." Also receiving respect for his 'overpair' on a 2 2 6 flop, he got two opponents to pass, one his Six, and the other Pocket Eights. He did have 2d 3d, but how were they to know that? Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: NoflopsHomer on October 29, 2006, 08:17:30 PM Lucky fish! ::)

Pass my regards on to Flushy and Dave Penly please....and everyone else too. JR Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 29, 2006, 09:11:14 PM Chili once again proves that there's often no harsher critic of your play than yourself (I know this to be all too true, but seeing as I'm not playing today I feel like I can give good advice I can't take myself, like, "relax, I've heard worse.") Pretty short stacked, she found the Aces on the big blind. Plus there was a raise to 500, and a small blind raise to 1,000 in front of her. Perhaps slightly panicky, a re-raise of 3,000 got rid of both of the opponents preflop, the s.b. after a lengthy dwell. Immediately unhappy with her play (which crossed the line where you get the first guy to fold and the second guy to call), she was going to poll you on blonde about it. But took one look at my DISCONNECTED bar and went back to play, which on balance is less frustrating.
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 29, 2006, 09:37:29 PM Hello Mr. Alright - yes, regards passed to a happy Flushy (after this rather monstrous hand):
Having doubled up with Kd Kh, Flushy raised it up again, and got a short stack pushing in and two other callers. Flop: Ac 4d 4c A short stack pushes now (Andrew Miles). It gets round to Flushy now, who says, "I'm all in," leaving Joe Grech as the fourth person in the pot, thinking about whether to call all in. "What time is it?" he asks. "Nine thirty? Is there a cash game going?" He calls. Joe Grech shows: Kc Jc Flushy shows: Aspades Qh Andrew shows: Ad Th Original Pushing In short stack Matey shows: 9s Kd Turn: 7c And it looks like Joe will be the beneficiary of a nice pot, before: River: 4s So the substantial side pot goes to James, and the other Ace guy splits with the house for the rest. That hand alone has led to the first table break of the day. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 29, 2006, 10:04:08 PM Blinds are currently 150/300

She says he is always dealt a pocket pair, which almost always spikes a set to go with it. Over 50k, I think it will be hard for anyone on that table to take him on.
Meanwhile James and Dennis O'Mahoney are slowly accumulating their table's chips, although a new batch of people from table break Two aren't giving them the respect they Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: ItsMrAlex2u on October 29, 2006, 10:33:01 PM Hi Jen

Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 12:09:00 AM Update Post -
So much has happened in the last level, while I have been practising my temper-control talking to the Voice of Vodafone... more on that when I feel like I've done some work, reporting to you these things: Tikay is OUT - he never got above his starting stack, really, and had one of those plays-itself hands to finish him off about 20 minutes ago. He found Ad Qh and raised to 1,200 (blinds 200/400). A little stack called all-in, and he received another call. Flop: 9d Td Jd. No options there - the rest (6k or so) went in; call from JK - no improvement, and quick re-seat in the cash game, where they appear to be playing Omaha hi-lo. Almost hoping my internet had firmly kicked the bucket so I could give that a go instead. Flushy still going very well, and distraught to think that "the one time I get chips, and keep them for a while, you can't get online." Well have a congratulatory smiley, then... ;cheerleader; ------------------------------------------------- Big hand on Table ex-Tikay - they got Aspades Ac, Kd Kc and Qh Qs dealt at the same time as (smaller chipped) Ad 3h. So - the predictable preflop raise-fest occurs, but lets the Queens know by the time it gets back to him that he really shouldn't call. That leaves the Aces, Kings and A3off to see what happens. A big shout loud enough to get my attention despite listening to Tom Waits in an effort to control my rapidly deteriorating temper got me to the table in time to find out that the Kings had four-flushed in diamonds, getting rid of the Aces, while good old A3 of course took the main pot. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: NoflopsHomer on October 30, 2006, 12:15:42 AM A big shout loud enough to get my attention despite listening to Tom Waits in an effort to control my rapidly deteriorating temper got me to the table in time to find out that the Kings had four-flushed in diamonds, getting rid of the Aces, while good old A3 of course took the main pot. Chili is OUT - sounded like a bit of a frustrating evening for her, after a tough start and then playing low stacked with the chip leader on her table. Blinds: 300/600 Players remaining: 35 Dennis O'Mahoney 12,000 Steve Bovis 38,000 Mukesh Morjaria 4,500 Dave Penly 27,000 Mike Harnett 14,800 (optional Internet Rant) I'm not sure how many people know this, but blondepoker counts as "Controlled Content" with service providers. When I signed up, I spent about two hours of my life which I am never getting back trying to lift the bar, which presumably opened up a whole exciting world of porn and online gambling which in turn allows Vodafone to charge you a quid and register you. For some reason, tonight was the night they decided to reinstate said bar. For a start, finding out what the phone number of your Data card thing is isn't as easy as you might think, when you've pulled off the little sticker through many many close-nearly-broke-that-off-in-laptop moments. It's an uphill struggle of the sort that can only happen when you're on the phone and your battery is dying - "I am just lifting the bar now." "Great." "And putting it back on..." "No, I don't want it on, I want it off, like it has been for the last year." "Well, it's funny, you have to do it like this." "OK, but am I going to be able to access my site?" (feeling like I ought to say it was suitable for children) "Just turn it off and reconnect." "I've done that about 40 times tonight." "Do it again." "OK." Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 12:30:28 AM Here's Dave Penly, who seems to think (bless) that I have a psychic link with Snoopy and can tell him the latest from Dublin even without the Interweb. Sadly that is not the case (although I've been tempted to run out in the car park with my laptop to have a look, even though I know that's not terribly wise).

The board: 7s 6h 8d His opponent had bet out what looked like 10,000 into a little less than that in the pot. Flushy had clearly just pushed in over the top and was calmly waiting while the other guy sweated over calling all-in. Eventually, Matey passed Qh Qd face up, for which he was rewarded by James showing 9s 9d. Back to 57,500 then. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 02:27:45 AM Flushy is OUT - Finally ran AQ into Aces... but it was the previous two hands which did the real damage.
Incidentally, I know someone was asking about Alex Martin...well, he was Big Blind Sevens Matey in that other hand. Now sitting comfortably on around 40k. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 02:35:58 AM Michael Greco is pretty short stacked (under 10k) and not in the best of moods after losing this pot:
He was in the small blind, and I saw him call the button's 4k on a board of Jh 8d Tc 5h. River: 3h check-check. The button reveals the (winning) Jc 8h, and a bit of bitter muttering follows, including the words, "lucky," and "f***." Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 02:57:57 AM A few more chip counts, now that it looks like the action may be gently grinding to a halt in preparation for the pause between days (otherwise known as the poker nap):
Steve Bovis 58,000 Michael Greco 7,500 Ryan Fronda 16,000 Vu Nguyen 12,700 Richard Prew 36,000 Tony Adderley 25,000 Jeff Rogers 58,000 Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: NoflopsHomer on October 30, 2006, 03:04:52 AM Flushy is OUT - Finally ran AQ into Aces... but it was the previous two hands which did the real damage. Bad luck flushy, please wish Tighty all the best, he's due a good result. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 03:11:27 AM Jane just spotted Michael Greco doing a last-minute-elimination sprint from the card room, so can't ask him what happened...
But that means that they're down to 19 and that will most likely be the number returning to play tomorrow, as there are only seven minutes remaining in the final level. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 03:17:17 AM With just two minutes to go, it's safe to say that This Is The End of today. While I balance the need for sleep with the desire to procure full chip counts, here's a picture of Tighty, doing his best to pretend he doesn't want his picture taken.
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 03:25:24 AM STOP PRESS
Addressing mainly my own echo at this unsociable time of night on a Sunday, I would like to Update the End of Play time to one hour from now. For much of today I have been thinking it's Saturday, you know, Main Event and all. So I was sure they had to kick us all out by 4am. But no - one more level is being played, and then a return tomorrow at 2:30pm, as far as I know from the advertising leaflet. Down to two tables now. <Break> Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Wardonkey on October 30, 2006, 03:28:10 AM Echo...
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 03:56:05 AM Thank you for that, Wardonkey. I've been having a chat with Flushy who's extolling the virtues of the $20 rebuy 8 min blinds tournaments, as opposed to these things with a decent structure. If he was thinking about having a go on this laptop, it would be the worst idea since CheeseWiz.
Signs of tiring from the last 17 now - going to go get some photos of those who may have escaped earlier photography. Including the new Chip Leader. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Wardonkey on October 30, 2006, 04:01:31 AM I'm off to bed!
Hard luck Flushy... Good luck Richard. Thankyou Jen. Nite, nite ;sleep; Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: NoflopsHomer on October 30, 2006, 04:06:54 AM Snoops and I are off to catch the flight home, no sleep for us. Take care Jen. ;applause;
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 04:08:22 AM Still Life of Chip leader and Local Chris Egerton with Hot Drink, surrounded by other decent stacks.
Then, pan right slightly to get the permanent chin supporters (Jeff Rogers, left, I think). Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 04:10:52 AM Here's Richard, looking like Homer and Snoopy are going to feel when they land in England.
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 04:16:35 AM To cover for the fact that I have totally failed to get chip counts, and am now going to sit here and wait for the full lot just to show good faith - here's a closeup of the chip leader's soft drink. Notice that the little plastic spoon thing is sticking straight up - magic, or just hot chocolate?
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 04:20:17 AM Let no one say that I ever take the easy option.
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 04:23:57 AM In the closing minutes (the actual closing minutes, this time) - Ryan Fronda (front) getting a weird sort of staring at from Vu Nguyen.
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2006, 04:40:12 AM As promised, the End of Day Counts, before I crawl across the parking lot to my hotel...

Sleep well, all of you. Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Rookie (Rodney) on October 30, 2006, 04:50:50 AM Great Updates Jen.. Good Luck Tomorrow Tighty!
Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: riverdave on October 30, 2006, 05:59:56 AM Chip leader is most definitely this guy now - over 100k after two large stacks got it all in preflop rather abruptly. Raise from Ad Ah, re-raise all-in for the full 50k (from the Ks Kh); call. King on the turn. Big stack for this gentleman, now positioned two to the left of Flushy. The rail for the Other Guy. that was me grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on October 30, 2006, 08:43:36 AM Many thanks for these updates, Jen, top notch as usual, especially considering you were running around on your tod. :)up
Please remember, folks, that Jen isn't paid per update, she gets the same figure however many venues she works at. With this weekend already scheduled in for a Dublin update, Jen volunteered to cover the Southern Masters for those who wanted to follow the likes of tikay, Tighty, Chili and co, so please show your respect and give the lass a warm round of applause for a job well done. ;applause; :respect: Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: SupaMonkey on October 30, 2006, 09:00:41 AM ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; Title: Re: Southern Masters Live Update - Interactive Post by: Tonji on October 30, 2006, 10:22:09 AM Thank You Jen, a fine breakfast read. ;applause; ;applause; ;applause; Good Luck Tighty.
