Title: What do you know about Malta?
Post by: Newmanseye on November 02, 2006, 10:55:22 AM
I recieved an E-mail today about a very lucrative sounding position in Malta, now it all seems very nice and never one to buck the trend i have aggreed to meet with these nice folks.  Now not that Im a skeptic I just wonder what the island of Malta is like,

Is the education system ok for the kids of Ex pats?

Is the country a little under developed?

you know the stuff i mean

The more opinions and and gems of information i get the better.

cheers

Billy

Hi,

It was a few years ago but I loved the place.
Very catholic and therefore seemingly crime free (compared to here anyhow).
Landscape typical of that area.
The bus service runs on 1970's British Leylands which are amazingly immaculate and chromed up something rotten, lots of old British cars like that too. Seeing Mark 1 Escorts for eg in pristine condition is not unknown.

I found the people friendly, and they seemed to have a soft spot for the British (WW2 and all that).
It is a very laid back culture and wherever I went I felt at ease and safe (Mind you I felt happy enough in Harlem and Queens).

Personally, an offer like that to me when I was single would have been snapped up.

I heard you can get Falcon flavoured Maltesers there, could anyone buy me some? Will pay for postage and tip extra.

Malta is beautiful, and probably one of the best places to bring up children, but when they eventually leave Malta, they wont know whats hit them.

Me and the Lady went 2 years ago and i must say that its a beautiful country, We stayed at the top of the Island at a place called Melliah Bay (has a lovely long sandy beach, which i think is the only sand beach on the island).

We were told to not drink the tap water as there water system is/was terrible (i didnt listen and brushed my teeth using the water and was on the crapper or 24 hrs).

The roads when i went were dreadful, All bumpy and cracked and getting in a taxi was like going on a rollercoaster,

But i've been told that they have a new fleet of buses and the roads have been greatly improved recently,

And as for the people, I havent met a nicer, friendlier bunch,  Oh and its bloody cheap also (unless you take ya mrs to the jewellery shop..........boy that was a mistake.

Good luck with your venture.

There is a fantastic looking girl called Sabrina who stays there.  I met her on holiday when I was there ten years ago  :D. We sent a few letters, but she opted for a Burger King work colleague in the end  :D.     There are also some nice Bars, etc in the busier areas.  It is a relaxed place, like many other holiday type places.  The taxi and bus drivers are insane.  I loved the War Museum and went there about five times.   There you go, some more completely pointless information brought to you by Sark, lol.

I went when I was 14 and that is where I met Leon. I found it was very much like the UK, they spoke English and had all the english shops, I went in April and it was slightly warmer than the UK. I can't really remember much, where we stayed it was a bit grotty but I'm sure theres nicer places.

Go on a short break with your wife and kids and see how you all like it.

Good luck

Me and Mrs Delboy went there this year. The bus fleet has been modernised, although the roads are still C**p and everyone drives with their right foot flat to the floor and their right hand on the horn!!!

They are building new sandy beaches about.

Have to agree with what everyone has said about the people being friendly. They hate the Germans tho.... :D

Given the chance we woul live there for a year or two.

i loved malta when i was there with brad. there are lots of deserted army barricks. no security around a lot of them. lots of bunkers and turrets. we found a bullet (which we didn't bring back through customs) and lots of shotgun shells. the place was near the hotel we stayed at. it was an old palace on top of a hill with no public transport:)
it was very very hot and the locals are beautiful folk. a real family orientated country.
i enjoyed everything about it apart from the bite from some weird insect with claws that stuck into my belly. ouch:( and the flies were abundant. the fat bodied ones that dive bomb you for your ice cream cone. even inside the flies were everywhere but i heard the had a freak flie frenzy that year:) also, there is a lot of litter in the sea at the harbours. i couldn't believe folk would toss in empty bottles and plastic wrappers to suffocate the earths lungs:(
all that being said, it doesn't take anything away from malta and i will go there again for sure

for 4 nights yes....unfortunately i succombed to the charms of another in the rooftop swimmming pool which somewhat scuppered the relationship from that point onwards  :D
