Title: Now what do I do?
Post by: Poppet7 on November 03, 2006, 01:32:19 AM
A few weeks ago I deposited $10 in my account and in one day made it up to $450. Now it's gone right down to $100 and I really don't want to go bust. I've tried playing the $5 stts but they're so full of trout that it annoys me and I usually end up bubbling because of a bad beat. (I used to play $10 and they suited me fine)

I'm no good at cash
I'm practising MTT play but not getting many cashes.

What now?  :dontask:

Tried that once... and won!

Don't think that's the answer though! I think the answer would be to give up completely :(

You must have done my trick of increasing the stakes beyond your bankroll whenever increasing it till the inevitable bad run cripples it.
I like the $20 mark, fewer loons but not pros either. Bluffs even work at this level sometimes lol.

It seems obvious to go to $10 STT where you are comfortable, you have enough for 9 games, more than enough to start rebuilding.

yeah I agree. if you're comfortable playing the 10'er STT's then you should play those. 100$ is fine for that.

Why would you want fewer loons?

I would have thought they were your bread and butter.

Too many loons in a STT mean sitting and hoping you get good cards, then hoping they hold up.
Is profitable long term but is nearly as boring as cash games.

I am a recreational player who enjoys the bonus of not having to pay for my hobby. But I look for games I enjoy, and a level where there is 2 or 3 loons and the remainder tightish is always my favourite mix for a STT. It means I can mix up my game accordingly against different styles.
The loons make the solid players play too tight as well creating a perfect set-up for people who don't play a set game.

I imagine notes on me on sites range from "calling station loon" to "tight as a gnats arsehole".
This is because I never sit down planning to play a specific way, so it depends where and when you played me.

But if I had the choice of a table full of loons or a table full of rocks, I'll take the rocks any day. Then I can be the loon which is great fun lol.

yeah you are of course right.. but it's better to use the 100$ to play a game at a level you are comfortable with then play a lot of games you are not comfortable with IMO.

1 buy-in may be enough, depending on your goals.

I'm in a similar boat at the minute in that I've got $100 and going to stick to $10 six seaters for a bit and see how I get on.  That's fine for me, because I don't mind if I 'go bust'.  You've said above that you don't want to go bust, so for that reason $10 games are probably too risky.  You've been having a good run on MTTs lately - why not play a few $2-$6 MTTs and see how you get on?

Good luck!

While we appreciate bankroll management theory, I've never seen the point of applying it to a £50 bankroll.
It's not the end of the world to rebuy £50 into your account if the worst happens.
Though personally I have never done a bankroll in on STT's, I find 10 buyins enough at these levels.

A well made point

As pointed out in this thread bankroll management means very little if you are prepared to go bust. I mean the $5 are really where you bankroll is at the moment.

Also it is what you want from poker, i have to say personally alot of my enjoyment from the game comes from the sense of achivement of outplaying my opponents (maximising my profits)  and therefore i want to be playing against the worst players possible.

In the world of SNG's though this doesn't necessarily mean the worst players are the loose maniacs, often the over tight players are loosers in these games, you have to know when to LAG it up late on in these games.

My suggestion is play what you enjoy, it sound like small MTT buyins are the way to go here.

"CASH OUT"  if you cant afford to lose what you have remaining, you should not be playing, save your $100 and put it in your pocket for something more useful and when you have a sufficient bankroll return another day, there will always be a game. Also you should have been cashing out when you hit over $200, Every $100 u won you should be cashing out %50 of it..that way you wouldnt be in this situation and because you had extra money you figured you would play higher games when you where a winning play at the lower level. Stick to that level and cash out in future, every little helps. Good luk.

Seeing as I was getting desperate last night I had to go and moan to my poker tutor and tell him to "help meeeee!" so that is what he did. I watched him play a few stts and wrote notes on it then tried it for myself. I'm now on $10 9 seat STTs (Speed) and managed to slightly improve on the $92 I had left!

I agree with what some of you have said about wanting loons at the table but in my case it's been down to the bubble and I have a medium stack, I go all in with a hand like QQ and get shat on by some moose holding K7... it's all well and good if my hand holds but I've been losing every showdown recently (99% I always go in with the best hand) and it gets very annoying!

Anyway I shall see how the Speed STTs go tonight, and also as Claire said, try some baby MTTs, as I have been doing over the past few weeks to try and get better at those too.

Thanks for all the advice :)

Well playing the Speed tourneys has really helped and I've been making the $ in the majority of them, my account is now up to $200, much healthier than the $92 that I was faced with the other day. It's improving slowly, but surely :)
