Title: Bonfire Night
Post by: Tinsel Town on November 05, 2006, 06:23:34 PM
It's like Operation Shock and Awe outside my house at the moment

Wee Agnes , my 70 + year old next door neighbour is terrified and her
cat has vanished causing more worry.

Am I a killjoy or is this night just an excuse for eijits to legitimately
make a racket?
 :( :(

I'm currently making a fruit punch for a party.

1 70cl bottle of Vodka
1 70cl bottle of White Rum
1 70cl of White Wine.
4 litres of Orange Juice
2 litres of Five Alive
1 litre of Cranberry Juice
1 litre of Apple Juice.
Numerous fresh and canned fruits.

It's only one night a year. (Unless you live in the middle East...)

For the flavour sir. I can't bring myself to drink cheap Tesco's house vodka on it's own.

Aww c'mon.... Fireworks rock.  I spent an hour gently freezing in Harlesden watching their 'Don't Try This At Home' public display.  My ears hurt and I keep seeing floating lights in front of my eyes but I'd do it every day if it were socially acceptable.  Blowing small things up which make exciting showers of sparks is pure entertainment.  And Dana's cat is so old I don't think it can hear anything anyway.  Sorry about your neighbour though.

Fireworks should be banned, there's no upside imho of course.

They should only be sold to organised events.  I know there are many responsible people who have the right to buy them, but unfortunately there are also many Neds who aren't responsible enough to be trusted. As a result banning them from being sold in shops is the only solution to this problem.
I was on a Bus the other day and two guys in their 30's got on with a big box of fireworks. They had just bought them and one said to the other  " I am going to try this one when I get home".  It was 11:30 am and not even Nov 5th.  If adults think like this, what chance do their Kids have. None.  The Kids see this as acceptable and unfortunately we are plagued by them for another generation. The cycle continues.

I agree but atleast you were fortunate they didn't light them on the bus (which does happen!).

I use to take the kids to organised displays until 2 years ago, my youngest wasn't well so a good friend offered to take Jenny (11 at the time) along with their children.

One of the large rocket/banger things went flew off sideways into the crowd hitting her, it kinda takes the "fun" out of it from then on.....

In my experience it's far from one week in the year. I think if it was I'd hardly notice and it might feel like an 'occasion' (may be even something to look forward to so long as the things aren't used to terrorise people as they go about their business - wishful thinking.).

Then again, I never had fireworks as a kid (bonfire in the garden, a sparklerand we were happy so not surprising I don't see what all the fuss is about.

How come there was no display in Dublin Jen?

'Shottingham'? Reminds me, I need to watch 'Shottas'...keep hearing kids reference it and brother says there are some funny lines so I'll have to pull my finger out and load the DVD that's been sitting on my bookcase since the World Cup.
