Title: Default Gateway?
Post by: Poppet7 on November 08, 2006, 03:19:05 PM
I'm having problems with my computer, its connects to the internet but won't let me onto any websites or msn messenger, when I troubleshoot it says its the default gateway and then I click repair and nothing happens so everytime I want to go on the internet now I have to do a system restore and then it's fine for a day or so then I get the same problem...

Anyone have any ideas on how to sort this out?

How do you connect to the Internet?... Are you using a Router to share your connection or does the modem plug straight into one PC?

Who is your Internet Service Provider?

How do you know you are connected to the internet do poker sites work?

Is it just websites and MSN messenger that dont work?

Well it says I'm connected and shows me the speed and time I've been connected... tbh I didn't try poker sites.

MSN Messenger says the thing about Default Gateway
Websites just say cannot connect to server

Could be like 100 different things...

Do this while connected to the internet.

First thing is to try and get a new IP address.

Goto the start menu then to run and type cmd then hit ok.

A new window pops up in this type ipconfig/release then hit Enter

A message should say adapter succesfully released ...

After this type in ipconfig/renew this may take a couple of mins.
----------------

Also check that Internet Explorer is set to automatically detect settings.

Goto Tools->Internet Options-> Connections Tab -> Lan Settings and ensure the "Automatically detect settings" box is ticked ...

-------------------------------

When you say a system restore makes it work How far back do you go? Also do you remember installing any software after that date prior to this problem happening?

It was working fine (this connection has only been set up for a week or so) but one day I switched on the computer and it didn't work. I will try all the things I've been advised to do when I get back later on. Thanks for the help guys.

Try doing Start -> Run -> cmd then type 'ping www.google.com' (without quotes) in the windows that appears. You should get back something like :

Reply from 66.102.9.99: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=241
Reply from 66.102.9.99: bytes=32 time=37ms TTL=241
Reply from 66.102.9.99: bytes=32 time=45ms TTL=241

Ping statistics for 66.102.9.99:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 35ms, Maximum = 45ms, Average = 39ms

if you are connected to t'internet

Possibly the easiest think to do is a system restore to a point that it was working....

Possibly the easiest think to do is a system restore to a point that it was working....

Programs - Accessories - System Tools

Or if you goto your control panel - internet connections. and selct repair it should reset and find your default gateway..
