Title: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 09, 2006, 05:43:35 PM Is this a first for me??
OK PC working fine and dandy until this morning when son goes to go on Runescape and PC freezes - not a problem he reboots and tries again, PC freezes on reboot. He screams for me, I scream at him for buggering my PC up. I reboot it, run a disk check and all is fine - off I go to work. I come home, son is screaming, PC keeps turning itself off. Son gets chucked into next year (j/k btw). I managed to get it to boot up and stay on long enough to get halfway through a scan, then it decided to freeze again, on reboot it decided to keep turning off. PC will boot up for 5 - 10 seconds and then just turns itself off. So, do I assume the fans knackered or do I assume the little sod has dumped some virus or 20 on it? I am currently doing a virus scan in Safe Mode, but PC has been turned off for about 15 mins whilst I ranted and ranted and screamed and kicked next doors cat. So chances are the sodding thing has froze or turned itself off again whilst I am typing this. Suggestions? Pleassseeeeeeeee. Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Ironside on November 09, 2006, 05:47:12 PM sounds like a virus but could also be hardware problem
have you tried doing a restore Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 09, 2006, 05:49:13 PM sounds like a virus but could also be hardware problem have you tried doing a restore That's my next step after I've scanned everything in safe mode. lol At the moment it is still scanning, so I'm thinking it's a virus. I really must get the vaccuum to it though, I bet it's gopping inside. Does anyone know if YouTube can have virus's on it? Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 09, 2006, 06:24:21 PM 45 minutes into Virus Scan in Safe Mode and it freezes.
So I reboot and restore to a few days ago, just as it tells me what it has restored and AVG is trying to load its updates - BOOM! it freezes again. I just don't know what to try next, I've now walked away from it in disgust before it takes a flying lesson. Gone back in to look at it and it's turned itself off again. Title: Re: PC help please! Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Ginger on November 09, 2006, 07:20:56 PM Sounds like the same sort of thing that I was trying to sort out a little while ago:

When the PC shuts down does it autoreboot, or switch off? What make pc is it? Can you get into the BIOS to check the temperatures? Title: Re: PC help please! When the PC shuts down does it autoreboot, or switch off? What make pc is it? Can you get into the BIOS to check the temperatures? It switches off. It's a Novotech one, and I could get in to the Bios to check the temperatures, but I've just took the side off it and discovered that the fan on the Motherboard isn't working. <weep> I'm currently running an online virus scan - even though I'm now pretty sure it isn't a virus and even though I know it's all gonna go kaput before it finishes. I'm thinking it's time to fit a new fan to it - if I don't fry my motherboard before then!!! OH FFS!! Son has just walked in house and said "Why has the PC just turned itself off?" Weep I hate PC's. Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Bongo on November 09, 2006, 07:49:55 PM Should be pretty cheap to fix then.
It should shut itself down before it overheats but I wouldn't want to risk it. Have you tried cleaning the fan out incase it's just clogged? Title: Re: PC help please! Have you tried cleaning the fan out incase it's just clogged? It was whizzing round a beauty when I had the Dyson on it! lol It doesn't want to whizz round on its own anymore though. Stoopid thing. Ever wish you'd stayed in bed? - laptop just froze and crashed too!! Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 09, 2006, 08:16:11 PM Apparently my AMD Athalon or Athlon (I can't be arsed getting up and going to look at the correct spelling) has some sort of thermal cut off on it, and seeing as my fan ain't spinning (in more ways than one ;)) it's cutting out to protect my PC.
Thank you Bongo for your help, but as usual I panicked and then sussed it myself. My Dad's off work for a week now, and has lots of bits of computer spares lying around, so hopefully it'll be up and running again in a couple of days. Title: Re: PC help please! At the time of losing my rag, 24 people had viewed the thread and only Ironside had had the decency to try and help!! It was like a warzone in here with me and the kids all screaming at each other - just cos they couldn't get on bloody Runescape!! Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 09, 2006, 08:21:14 PM Did I just read Kev sticking up for me? ? ?
OK who has nicked his log in? lol Thank you hunny xx Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Graham C on November 09, 2006, 10:23:51 PM dont forget the thermal paste when fitting a new fan, otherwise it will overheat again.
Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 10, 2006, 10:32:33 AM Ahhhhh darn it, I did read about that and I bet my Dad hasn't got any!
I wonder if Maplins have any? Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Graham C on November 10, 2006, 10:56:02 AM Maplins website has some, I guess in store will be the same.
If it's a second hand fan, it would be worth getting some TIM Cleaner to make sure the surface of the fan is clean before applying it. Title: Re: PC help please! Hmm I think I best fork out for a new one! lol Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Graham C on November 10, 2006, 12:48:12 PM Probably better, they are only cheap and will come with the thermal paste on already. It's messy stuff to apply.
Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Bongo on November 10, 2006, 03:12:52 PM You might not need it, if you're just changing the fan then it will be ok.
If you are removing the heatsink from the CPU (or whatever else if it isn't the CPU fan) then you will need some. Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 10, 2006, 04:17:17 PM I argued the toss with him about that paste and he said only if it is for the heat sink as well, anyway he hasn't used any, but I could scream at what he has done!!!
The new fan he has got for it is bigger that the old one and so the screws won't match up - so what has he done? He's only f***in superglued it in place!!!!!!!! Oh I can hear you all laughing now, I'm not laughing - I'm soooo not laughing. He says to me, you will know if it has come loose cos it will make a funny noise!!! God give me strength from men and their bodge jobs!!! Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Bongo on November 10, 2006, 04:33:35 PM Should be fine!
Title: Re: PC help please! Post by: Trace on November 10, 2006, 06:07:35 PM Thank you Ironside, Bongo, and Silo Graham.
