Title: Mike Newell speaks his mind lol
Post by: Longy on November 11, 2006, 11:26:51 PM
I think he has got himself in deep water over this.

Luton manager Mike Newell on assistant referee Amy Rayner:
"She should not be here. I know that sounds sexist, but I am sexist, so I am not going to be anything other than that.
"We have a problem in this country with political correctness, and bringing women into the game is absolutely beyond belief.

"It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have, but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems.

"This is Championship football. This is not park football, so what are women doing here? It is tokenism for the politically-correct idiots."

If someone is considered by those in a position to appoint referees and assistants good enough, then I do not care a jot what sex they are.

Same as in any walk of life.

I do not consider it political correctness that is causing more women to enter football officialdom, therefore Newell is wrong

Even though no doubt he was speaking in a post match interivew when feelings can still be inflamed, I think he should be hauled over the coals for uttering such tripe.

yep.

I don't have a problem with him saying it..however if an outstanding female ref were to come along I don't see why she wouldn't be able to referee a game...but I see his point in trying it out in lower leagues before taking it up to championship+ level.

I agree with him a 100% Football is a mans game and it should be officiated by men.

I am sorry but I think this is completely wrong. If female officials are there becuase they have the necessary experience and qualifications then fine

Women's football leagues have also improved in standard immesurably and a team like Arsenal, top of the FA Women's Premier League have full time coaches for thier ladies team

Even down to the level of my seven year old daugther wanting to play in her school team and succeeding, anything that makes football more modern and inclusive to all must be a good thing for the future health of the game

I'm all for the whoever's best for the job. I'm sure there are women out there that would make great refs given an even playing field. Can't see an advantage in limiting the sex of the match officials to correspond with those playing the game/sport.

Michaela Tabb is a fine example of a woman in a 'man's' sport IMO. Tennis comes to mind too but I haven't watched it in years so don't know which umpires are kicking about these days.

My problem with women in football is the off-side rule.  They didn't understand the old one..they've got no chance of understanding the new one. ;)  ;hide;
