Title: fed up
Post by: Claw75 on November 13, 2006, 12:01:04 AM
I've had bad beats, I've felt sick at bubbling, but always taken on on the chin as part of the game.  Don't know what's different tonight but I never felt so fed up with bloody poker as I do right now.  I've been playing just about a year, I'm not getting better - if anything I'm getting worse.  The luck that's seen me manage a handful of MTT wins in the past seems to have deserted me and now it just seems like a complete waste of time and money.  I always knew the novelty would wear of one day and I guess that day has arrived.

I'm going to go and tilt off my last few dollars at a cash table then pack it in - just stick to a live game once a month.

I know the feeling, I'd had an outstanding year until about 3 months ago, at the moment I  just can't win a coin flip at a key time. I guess some of the luck I probably had earlier in the year is evening itself out.

The thing is most of my winnings I just spend on holidays etc so I don't keep a large bankroll, so its getting veeery low now.

I look forward to a change in luck!

PS - feel free to come and find me if you want some free money :)

I was going to say where are you :D

Seriously, don't tilt it off.  I've found in the past when I am playing bad, take a second to think about what you are doing.  I know it's easier said than done, but think of it as explaining to someone else what you are doing and why you are doing it.  I've fond that boring telling my missus about hands has made me realise that I didn't lose due to bad luck, I lost to bad play.

Tilting your cash away won't make you feel better.  Have a small break or perhaps move down slightly in level, don't just give away your money though.

You'll get it back, everyone goes through dry spells :)

things changed for me about a month ago, much for the better again live and more recently on the net. No idea why

take a break, relax about it and come back refreshed when you are ready. Something out of nowhere will improve it

77 vs AK left me with a few BBs left, then I had to go all in with J6 on a 26x flop, vs T2, turn and river were big fat smelly 10s...both beats were by the same guy.

Have £2 for the badbeats, I'd only lose it on badbeats anyway.

don't anyone worry about me tilting off the rest of the bankroll - it's' only $28 :D

Title: Re: fed up
Post by: Graham C on November 13, 2006, 12:17:07 AM
$28 is a nice amount to take to a cash table, you can turn that into a nice amount.  Also it's 4 x $5 stt's or a few mtt's - don't waste it you can put it to a lot of good use and a lot of poker :)

$28 - it's still money.

Claire,

The truest poker "saying" for me is: You're not as good as your best result or as bad as your worst play.

Try to remember all the good things you've done. Think positive. Go to the 'community' section of this site and look hard at what you've achieved in some very tough blonde league fields. Don't doubt the achievement.... You kicked ass!

You put the moves on some much more experienced players than yourself, you've dominated final tables and you've always taken your wins with a little flair. Don't forget the highs.

well for once I'm pleased to report a plan that didn't work :)  My attempt to tilt off all my $$ at the cash tables now has me over $60 in profit on my $28 after two short sessions.  I might stick with the low stakes cash for a bit as I seem to be having a bit more luck there than with the tourneys.

I find the intro of supersystem where Doyle talks about his life very inspiring.
Not the poker bit...just him.

I always made more money at the cash games than with tourneys, maybe you're more suited to cash?  I'm having to learn how to adapt my game a little for tourneys - and I don't know if the play needs to be that different most of the time, it's more a case of a different overall approach.

There's no shame in dropping down a few levels at all.  Better to win a little than lose a lot.

If you do feel like you're on tilit find a micro-limit cash game and play like a maniac.  It's great fun, you can't lose more than a few dollars, and as you'll be playing fearlessly you'll probably end up winning!  In fact, I recommend that everyone tries it every now and again.

Kinboshi might be right, that your play might just be more suited to cash rather than tourneys, but with good results in the past it might be worth having a look at your game to see if you have changed it in anyway that might have affected your tourney results.

I had a bad run on MTT's, but the Saturday before last I entered a series of megacheap tourneys to analyse where I was losing and what I was doing wrong - as a result of that I changed my game a bit and won my first MTT since August on Sunday, and scored my first points in The Hendon Mob League on Tuesday. So it might be worth paying for a few $1 tournaments and scrutinising to see if any errors have crept into your tournament play.

Nowt wrong with your game and I know coz I've seen it live..............oh and by the way we ALL go through this at some point and it seems to happen to me far more on line than live. Your result at low level has already shown that. oh and one other thing I could happily smack the person who just stole half my stack with his 4's against my 8's...........there is more dubious play on line.

This is the exact reason I hardly play anymore...

I'm sick of losing, so now I only play very low stakes with friends and just
for the hell of it/for a laugh.

The trick is to always make sure you have 100% of your bankroll on the table.

haha - I was last night when I was going to donk off all my money, but today have been sitting down with 7-10%, then doubling up and running.

I know a brilliant, talented, gifted, handsome young player who is going through a terrible dry spell at the moment.

He is working hard though, doggedly trying ensure that he continues to play to the best of his ability and patiently waiting for his form to change.

What a hero! Good luck to him.

Claire,
I learned how to play, deposited some money and began my poker journey.
I played like a rock, text book poker. I made my raises and continuation bets, I went on a winning streak and I assumed it was easy. And it was. For a few months.
Then one day, my continuation bets start getting called or raised on a regular basis. And when I raise pre-flop with Aces and Kings, everyone folds. I'm doing nothing different, but I'm not winning any more. It's frustrating.
Suddenly I realise that people have been studiously taking notes on how I play. They pretty much know what cards I play and which ones I don't. They figure me for the rock that I am. I'm now relying on hitting cards.
So I change my game plan. I decide to loosen up a little and start playing a larger variety of hands from different positions. But I hit a bad run. The outdraws are crippling. I begin to doubt the whole theory behind the game. The odds just don't seem to be panning out like they should be. It gets demoralising.
I go back to basics but don't seem to have the patience I used to have. I start to believe that I am a better player than I actually am. But my bankroll doesn't back that up and it's hard to be honest with myself. I lose faith. I'm all but ready to give up altogether.

Does this sound familiar?
So I took a rest for a week. Then I set myself a challenge. I would sit at a 5/10c cash table with just $1. I would allow myself 2 hours and just two refills of $1, putting a measly $3 at risk each night. I did this for a month. Yes, a whole month!
My best result in the 2 hours was $51.20 from the $1 sit down. I only lost the whole $3 on 4 occasions, the other times I profited, mostly small amounts.
I got my discipline and my patience back. With the challenge I set myself, it was hard not to! I'm back winning again now.
It's still difficult to cope with the outdraws, etc, but I'm getting there slowly.

I don't know you at all, but I think if you really want it you can achieve it.
Good luck.

Good move to switch to some cash games for a change if your confidence has dropped in the tourny's Claire.

Nothing like a change of format to stimulate your brain and make pokerseem exciting again!

Once refreshed I'm sure you'll be able to get back to hitting the tourny's aggressively and successfully once more.  ;bat;

cheers rover and Keith.  don't want to jinx myself, but it's going very well at the moment playing the 6 handed cash tables.  The only dents to my bankroll since I started playing the cash tables the other night have been where I've decided to go in for an MTT or three.  I'll see how it goes - could just be beginner's luck, but I could see myself sticking to cash for a while if it's going to be quite profitable, then using some of the $$ I make from that to play a few MTTs (which are more fun :D)

That's exactly how I play Claw.  Cash is the bread and butter - the odd MTT is the odd treat - and an even better treat when  I do well in one.

I also prefer the 6-seater cash games.

You will suffer bad sessions though, sometimes lots in succession.  Last night was one for me, but don't let it get to you.  If you're outdrawn after playing a hand well and getting your money in with the best of it - you have won (even if it doesn't feel like it at the time).  You'll start to doubt yourself, question whether or not you've just been lucky in the past, etc.  But it'll pass.

Glad you're back to winning ways, and I guess you're not 'fed up' anymore?

Title: Re: fed up
Post by: Claw75 on November 14, 2006, 03:33:53 PM
I wouldn't say 'back' to winning ways - I've never been a winning player.  I've had a few nice cashes before and not had to deposit for a few months, but never been what I'd define as a 'winning' player.  Playing poker for me is recreation, and as long as I don't spend more than a few quid a month doing it, I'm happy :)  If this cash lark takes off though and I look like I can actually make a profit from playing, then all well and good :)

And no, I'm not fed up anymore :)

Nice to see your not "Fed up" anymore, and enjoying your dally into the cash tables.

I went through a similer dry patch after I came back from my pokerless holiday. I could'nt win a bean for the rest of October. I then hit the cash tables, and realized they are full of the worst/best players. I soon got back to winning ways, but I was risking more,so now I'm back doing ok on the pokerstars SnG's.

And enjoying it again,

hope you rak up that bankroll, in time for crimbo.

Good luck. :)up
