Title: O/T disturbing
Post by: bhoywonder on November 14, 2006, 02:02:23 AM
this has been disturbing me all day

a workmate told me today that at the weekend his sister was in Braehead shopping ( this is a very big shopping mall near Glasgow )

anyway a fellow in front of her dropped his wallet,so doing the right thing she picked it up and handed it to him to which he was very thankful

then the man said this 'one good turn deserves another,I would advise yourself and your family to avoid the mall over the months of November and December'

without wanting to sound racist and I hope not to stereotype etiher but the man was middle eastern looking in origin

she immediately reported this to the police who are going through the cctv camera footage currently

I find this very scary

thoughts?

I have to admit if this had happened to me then I would not go near the mall.

Its the kind of society we live in now unfortunatly, christmas shoppers in a large mall are always going to be a target and 1 day its bound to happen.

You either have to brave the world hoping it doesnt happen to you or do what I do and get all ur christmas presents delivered from Argos without leaving the house.

I fear getting to town in one piece with the bloody manic Polish bus drivers that have recently swamped Bath.

I was told the same story but it happened in central station, this was 3 years ago, The problem we have is that some people feel the need to perpetuate these myths and they actually say  things like " dont go near the shops in Nove, ber!!"  to poor unsuspecting souls.

I would not read too much on to it mate.

I heard it, but the man warned to stay away from Dundee.

Why, asked the lady, is there going to be an attack?

No, replied Al Jabbadi, it's because it's a shithole.

it's interesting how these urban myths get about isn't it?  Think this is the second one we've had this week.  I remember a few years ago when posh and becks were getting married and there was the urban myth about the couple getting bought out of their room at the Ritz.  I first heard it from a friend of mine - it was a fascinating story involving acquaintances of his.  Next day on the radio, the whole thing is an urban myth that's been spreading like wildfire.

If we decided to make one up now and spread it about, how long do you think it would take for it to get related back?  Shall we have a go?

extremist groups wouldn t last long if members went around advising people of attacks everytime someone did them a favour/ held a door open. Perhaps the 2 scotish guys off x factorar playing there in Nov/Dec.

This was reported to have happened at the airport on 9/11 as well........................................to nearly 7000 people who didn't get on the plane because of advice from a smartly  dressed middle eastern looking man,

Well I for one will be taking it to heart and going nowhere near any shopping centres over November and December!!

Right thats Christmas taken care of who can come up with an urban myth to get me out of the weekly shopping as well?

the end of the world is predicted for 2012. Embrace yourselves.  6 years to go, so try to have fun and enjoy your life.

actually, that last one reminds me of one day in my middle school (9-13).  I was 11 or 12 at the time and a rumour started going around the playground one morning that the world was going to end at 2.36 that afternoon - caused absolute panic and hysteria!

It's supposedly because the Mayan calendar 'runs out' on December 21, 2012 - signifying the end of the world. In actuality, the calendar doesn't end at all, it's just that the dates are usually abbreviated so Dec 21 2012 simply marks the end of one 400 year period, which will be followed by another.

So you will still have to do your Christmas shopping in 2012.

time to think of provisions, perhaps you can survive 24 hr longer then the rest of us.  I have booked myself for a trip to the Mars, leaving on the 20/12/2012

It's ok - just checked the calendar and the 21st is on a Friday.  I presume we will all get given the day off work if it is the last day of the world, so I'll probably arrange a big party on the 20th to celebrate my birthday, the end of the working week, and the end of the world.

I would be careful anyway and stay away from the shopping centre in question.  Unfortunately there are so many crazy fools like this in our Country now.  It is impossible to predict when something like this could happen and where.

by that logic Sark you'd never leave your house!  Mind you, you're not even safe at home (just remembered that post you made months ago about the roof falling in on you!)

I'm plan to live my life, go where I want to go when and how I want to go there, and do what I want to do.  If I'm ever in the wrong place at the wrong time and get blown up by terrorists, that'll just be unlucky.

you have more chances of dying of cancer/being run over by car/ then be killed by terrorist, unless you live in Iraq.

True, but if there was an Alien watching the News from  his/her Ship. All he would see is negativity. Each day on the News there is one story after another which is depressing.  I remember the News from when I was a Kid, ok there was the stories concerning famine in Africa and the troubles in Ireland, but in general it was a far saner place then than it is now

lol,  I am too much of a News junkie not to watch it.  Euronews is my favorite news channel though, it is good to see other stories rather than the same bunch of stories that is shown on repeat for days at a time.

I know what you mean Sark, and there's nothing wrong with being vigilant, but avoiding somewhere altogether would be taking it to far for me personally.  I know people who have refused to use the tube since 9/11 - turning down nights out etc because they 'couldn't get there'.  When the tube was (inevitably) targeted last year, they pretty much said that they had only surivived because they refused to use the tube(!).  I use the tube every day, as do millions of other people.  I have, however, moved carriages once or twice if I've been sat near someone acting in an odd or suspicious manner - that's where the common sense and survival instinct kick in.  Of course, it's been paranoia on my part each time because the tubes haven't blown up.  It used to be a lot easier before the suicide bomber threat - unattended package, report it.  You can hardly report a person acting oddly to the tube authorities though!

I'm rambling now!  I'll shut up!

I agree that it is daft to avoid somewhere, but if I had Kids or loved ones then I would not allow them to go near somewhere like that if there had been a warning. I am a disorganised fool and generally do my Christmas shopping on the 24th of December, so there is a 99% chance I will be in that shopping centre during the busy time this year

Nobody's going to blow up Kilmarnock Sark, it'd create too many improvements.

Al Jazeera International

English-language channel launches tomorrow at midday on Sky channel 514.

They hope to give a more balanced view of global events unlike the trashy, biased accounts we are used to over here with the likes of Sky and Fox  They've signed quite a few big names from BBC and CNN such as David Frost, Darren Jordan and Rageh Omaar, Riz Kahn and many more (some of whom criticised their own station's output in the past).

They say that stories from the Middle East will be discussed by "experts" based there and not from studios in London or the US. The main programming will be broadcast from Doha with further shows being broadcast from London, Washington and Kuala Lumpar.

Hopefully this channel takes off here, certainly looks promising with the heavy investment so far.

They are actually a very good channel. I hope they will be "smart" enough to make it available to everyone on digital..(including freeview) rather then going to go as an add-on to a Sky package or stand alone subscription channel.
