Title: gmail Help
Post by: Sark79 on November 14, 2006, 11:48:11 AM
I was wondering if a computer expert could help me please  :D

I want to know if there is a way to stop my name appearing when sending an email using gmail?   I have a thing about privacy and actually have about 36 Aliases I use on various sites and with people I meet on a daily basis :D .  I am just a messed up weirdo really , lol.   In 30 years time, I will probably live as a recluse in the Mountains somewhere, :-)

I hate the way every time I send an email using gmail my real name is displayed next to the message. I have tried to change it , but so far haven't been able to.  Of course, I am not talking about the email address, it is just the name I want to either get rid of or change.

With hotmail, there is no name displayed. It is only the email address that is shown.

thanks

when Gmail started up they made it quite clear that they have access to your emails for marketing purposes. That's why they were able to offer such a large storage capacity (now also done by yahoo and I suppose others)

They don't actively read it (a few too many emails being sent even for google to read them) but your emails can be /are scanned for marketing purposes. they are allowed to read it though. You have waived your privacy the moment you signed up for gmail.

Yahoo (and even the dreaded hotmail) does not do this.

It is why I refused a Gmail adress when they first came out.

Thanks.  I don't like the idea of them reading my mail.  All my poker related activities are done by using gmail.  The only sites I trusted with my main hotmail email address is the Blonde forum and Pokerstars, everything else is gmail.   I may change these if they can read me emails to my yahoo email address instead

Wikipedia has something interesting on gmail and privacy.

Open up one of your mails - you'll see advert links in your browser related to the content of your message. This is how Google makes its money, and how it is able to offer everything to you for free.

Every web-based email service 'reads' your emails - this is how spam filters work. In order to work out if a message is spam, you have to read it.

If you go to: Settings/Accounts -- Send Mail As >> edit info there is radio button to choose between the default account name and a text box.  If you check the text box radio button your mails will go out with whatever name you have put in the text box.

Sending unencrypted email is the equivalent of sending a postcard anyway.  If you are bothered about anyone reading it don't do it.

Any email that you send that isn't encrypted (using something like PGP) can be read by your ISP, the recipient's ISP, the IT bods in any company, etc.

Emails are sent and stored as plain text.

Also worth remembering - once you send an email to someone, it's out in the open.  You then have no control over where it goes or ends up.

It was mainly if I was sending a bunch of emails to rakeback providers or that sort of thing to find a good deal. I would prefer my real name not to be shown and also with poker sites/forums, etc.  It is ok now, I have changed my display name anyway

Create another Gmail account for exactly this purpose.

I have quite a few accounts, all for different uses.
