Title: The England Game Post by: roverthtaeh on November 15, 2006, 09:45:26 PM Having just sat through 93 minutes of 'football', I couldn't help but draw a few parallels between the match and a game of poker.
Holland with their accustomed patient build up. Waiting for a decent hand to come along. England edge ahead then go on the defensive. Taking down a small pot then folding a lot. Neither side prepared to gamble and go for the win. Only playing the premium hands. McLaren with his scrap of paper and his biro. Taking notes on your opponents at the table. A totally predictable draw. An hour and a half at the table just to break even. And finally.... As the camera pans round the ground, showing some gaps in the crowd, the commentator says; "Not quite a full house tonight". Story of my poker life.
