Title: Whisky recommendations Post by: redimp on November 16, 2006, 01:17:44 AM Would like to by Pete a nice bottle of malt whisky for Christmas...
Don't want to pay like £80 for one (I'm sure they are good tho) Just a nice brand that tastes good. He has drank a few over the years,i know he has enjoyed Glenmorangie etc.. in the past. And laphroiag ( although i think it tastes like dirt!! but hey what do i know ) Any ideas anyone?? Thanks in advance Shelly Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: rudders on November 16, 2006, 01:28:30 AM try the macallan- king of whiskeys imho, highland park is popular- my fav is bladnoch though- not as common should get any of these for 30-40 quid
Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: moritzey on November 16, 2006, 01:35:06 AM If you want a nice single malt, I'd opt for Oban Whisky - you can get their distillers edition for some 35 quid, I think. My personal favourite at least.

It's whisky! Whiskey is horrible horrible stuff, although I do agree with Macallans! GlenLivet is also very fine and I'm sure your man would enjoy either or even both. ;)Ignore anybody that talks about stuff from Ireland or ,god forbid, the U.S. philistines all! Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: CelticGeezeer on November 16, 2006, 02:59:33 AM I would recommend a Bushmills 16 Year old Single Malt.
Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: ariston on November 16, 2006, 03:42:33 AM You will not find a better bottle than Tamavaulin and it will only set you back about 30-40 quid. I have visited every single distillery in the Highlands and Islands a few years ago on business (ok I am a pisshead) and tried them all (including the Macallan Millenium special edition at £2k a bottle) and I promise you you wont find better. Macallan imo is overpriced tat made for the american market (the biggest whisky shop in the world in ironsides hometown of Elgin agrees with me about macallan before I get threatened with a lynching by the jocs).

Lots of choice, does he like them hard, soft, peaty? I like the Isay Malts for all round taste "Bunnahabhain" (pronounced bunnahavin I think) is a real favourite of mine There are some nice softer tasting ones from the same stable as "Oban" i.e. Glenkinchie and Dalwinnie I guess my current fav though is the Glenmorangie, layed down in sherry casks (dark label) ;stickaforkinme; Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: doubleup on November 16, 2006, 09:38:10 AM My fav is Highland Park.
Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: GlasgowBandit on November 16, 2006, 09:58:12 AM Just remember to make sure whatever you go for you buy him a 2 litre bottle of Irn-Bru 8)
Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: Zebediah on November 16, 2006, 09:59:07 AM My favourite is 18 year old Glenmorangie aged in sherry casks after an initial aging in bourbon casks.
A hundred times nicer than the 10 year old standard and not too expensive. Not sure if it is still 18 years old, but it used to be. Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: Zebediah on November 16, 2006, 10:00:51 AM Just remember to make sure whatever you go for you buy him a 2 litre bottle of Irn-Bru 8) lol, one of my fondest memories of our monthly work "golfing days" up in Helensburgh was the scottish lads having bottles of irn bru "spiced up" for going round the course. Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: Karabiner on November 16, 2006, 10:06:08 AM Laphroag does indeed taste like some sort of bathroom cleaning fluid.
Macallan's 10 year old is smooth and costs about £25, Highland Park is very peaty as is Talisker. Oban is a nice balanced drink as is Mortlach which is one of my favourites. Not even too expensive :) Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: Snatiramas on November 16, 2006, 12:56:55 PM Clynelish - Only one I drink. Only one I recommend. Generally costs around £30.
Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: Bongo on November 16, 2006, 03:38:57 PM My favourite is 18 year old Glenmorangie aged in sherry casks after an initial aging in bourbon casks. A hundred times nicer than the 10 year old standard and not too expensive. Not sure if it is still 18 years old, but it used to be. I found a bottle of this for £15 in Asda a few months back. A very happy bongo I was. Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: RedFox on November 16, 2006, 05:13:15 PM I agree totally with Snati.
Clynelish is the bollox - distilled close to where Glenmorangie is made and imo slightly similiar. So if he enjoys Glenmorangie he will appreciate Clynelish. Island malts are a wee bit harsh but a one to consider would be Bruichladdich - a reasonably priced gem. But overall malts like any other drinks are an indivdual taste and if he likes Glenmorangie, you wont go wrong in getting any variation of that brew. Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: lazaroonie on November 16, 2006, 05:30:59 PM going to have to say Highland Park - the 12 year old is very nice, but the 18 year old which they are bottling now is the absolute bollocks. Even better than the 25 !
Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: AndrewT on November 16, 2006, 05:39:17 PM the 12 year old is very nice No reason for this post other than to have fun with taking quotes completely out of context. Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: redimp on November 16, 2006, 09:32:59 PM Thankyou all some fantastic replys
Much better me having an idea now, rather than buying the one with the nicest label lol Many thanks Shelly Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: Ironside on November 16, 2006, 11:17:32 PM you cant do better than a speyside malt
a 10year old macallan ariston is right it is made for export but thats because most scotts nowadays drink vodka just remember when drinking a single malt do not pollute with water, ice or a mixer i prefer a 25 year old but i cant afford that too often Title: Re: Whisky recommendations Post by: tantrum on November 16, 2006, 11:24:27 PM Quote just remember when drinking a single malt do not pollute with water, ice or a mixer as this is a true crime indeed. This thread made me go and buy a bottle for myself. Unfortunately I got into bourbon recently, and woodford reserve is my drink for the moment. I might try some of the above suggestions though, they sound so yummy.... Karabiners right its about 'blending' the drink to your prefferd taste. I know a few distillery managers who do just that. Now if any of u can get a bottle of the special 'managers' bottles - yum they are the biz. Hope your man enjoys whatever u get him redimp |
