Title: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: TightEnd on November 24, 2006, 10:12:36 PM If so, could they contact me please?
Especially if they have knowledge on self publishing. A friend of mine ( ::) ) is completing his first novel and seeks advice and guidance on how to proceed beyond merely sending the script and a synopsis to 50 publishing houses and getting 50 rejection letters! Ta Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: RED-DOG on November 24, 2006, 10:23:49 PM Your "friend" has to do the rejection slip thing first Tighty. I know a man who wall-papered his bedroom with them before he got published.
It's character building. Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: TightEnd on November 24, 2006, 10:26:51 PM LOL ok then
No short cuts then, apart from paying to self publish? Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: RED-DOG on November 24, 2006, 10:39:34 PM LOL ok then No short cuts then, apart from paying to self publish? Sending it to a few dozen publishers won't cost much, and it won't make the book any better or worse. Much to gain, little to lose. Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: AndrewT on November 24, 2006, 10:48:50 PM I would suggest publishing the first chapter on the internet (blog or similar). Maybe there's somewhere publishing people hang out on the internet where they might have their attention drawn to it. If it's any good it might build up a head of steam.
Has this friend sought critical appraisal from other friends as to the quality of the novel? Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: Colchester Kev on November 24, 2006, 10:50:09 PM I got a letter published in Razzle once .... does that qualify me as being a published author ??
Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: TightEnd on November 24, 2006, 10:51:48 PM Has this friend sought critical appraisal from other friends as to the quality of the novel? yes he has, feedback was good. Couselling services in the local area were flooded with calls for days afterwards. Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: Gryff on November 24, 2006, 11:10:41 PM Self publishing is a very very dodgy route.
You have to publicise yourself etc etc, 99% of self published authors lose money :( Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: Graham C on November 24, 2006, 11:11:35 PM Not meaning to sound obvious, but copyright it before you stick it on the net or send it out to people - just to be sure.

You have to publicise yourself etc etc, 99% of self published authors lose money :( it depends on the author's motivations. If its a "labour of love" eg "Canal Tunnels on the Grand Union Canal 1873-1924" and there's no wider market for it, then the personal reward of, ahem, sharing this with a wider audience might outweigh financial considerations. Yes though, self publishing is not the answer for many Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: Jon MW on November 24, 2006, 11:28:41 PM 50 publishing houses?
rotflmfao I'd advise him to buy the "Writers Handbook" - http://www.whsmith.co.uk/WHS/Go.asp?isbn=0844253758&DB=220&Menu=Books (http://www.whsmith.co.uk/WHS/Go.asp?isbn=0844253758&DB=220&Menu=Books) - this contains pretty much all publishers contact details, it also gives guidance (where they've provided it) on what kind of thing they publish (it's not worth sending a war manuscript to a publisher of romance novels) and what kind of format they want it in (it's not worth sending the whole manuscript if they only want to see a sample chapter). I'd then approach every single publisher who fits in (it'll be quite a few more than 50), if he's got the time and money then he could do this all in one go (good if more than one publisher expresses an interest), or he could do them consecutively (takes a lot more time, but a lot easier on the pocket). (Why am I using so many brackets?) Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: TightEnd on November 24, 2006, 11:30:15 PM (thank you)
Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: thetank on November 24, 2006, 11:41:32 PM Don't worry Jon, (some publishing houses look for parenthesis.)

Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: SuffolkPunch on November 24, 2006, 11:52:07 PM Tighty
don't send the whole script off to pubishers. Send the 1st chapter only, plus short synopsis and a short and concise covering letter. The whole script will NOT be read and it'll cost you a fortune in printing and postage. They will make a decision very quickly based on the one chapter and synopsis. Many will not even go past the covering letter, so make sure you sell yourself well in that, without "overdoing" it - ie saying "this is the book to finally rival Harry Potter" or something similarly daft (it happens!) Good luck! Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: TightEnd on November 24, 2006, 11:53:43 PM I'm intrigued whats the title? Post by: Ironside on November 25, 2006, 01:37:19 AM i beleive there is a new compnay allow people to sell books via the internet they only print the book once a person orders a copy and therefore taking away the cost in self publishing the person buying the book get a book that looks like one you buy from a bookshop

Post by: Rod Paradise on November 26, 2006, 11:47:36 AM Tighty, another Site I'm involved in ended up publishing our own book, we had iot done in the USA (as it was cheaper), and sold it ourselves. We had to sell a hell of a lot to cover the costs, but we're damn proud of our book. We ended up with a few hundred quid to aid with the site running costs.
I can get details off the guy who did the publishing if you want. Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: MPOWER on November 26, 2006, 12:40:42 PM I have just finished a book. It took about 18 Months to complete
I may consider offering it to a publisher. it just gives a big boost to your confidence once you have finished. I guess the next step is hoping some professional publishers will give it a go. Regards M Title: Re: Any blondes with experience in publishing? Post by: tantrum on November 26, 2006, 12:50:28 PM Before going to the publishers, it would be worth to give it to a good editor, and make sure that the synopsis is of the highest quality. Most publishers won't receive unsolicited manuscripts anyway - due to the possibility of being sued I.e they publish a book by other author that is similar to your story and blah blah blah.. So perhaps a good route is to go via literary agent first.
