Title: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 26, 2006, 09:51:56 PM Got a bet on NY Giants to win. I don't know much about NFL, but I'm hoping for 3 winning bets out of 3 tonight.
edit: 20-0 up in the first, should be ok ;) Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 26, 2006, 10:08:45 PM absolutely certain
Giants are play off bound, titans just starting a long recovery as a franchise Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 26, 2006, 10:26:25 PM TY Tighty :)
Just watching Bears v Patriots on Sky, quite a good game for me Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 26, 2006, 10:31:21 PM p.s next time you want to know the result of a certainty, ask before game starts. MAKES US BOTH LOOK BETTER!!!
Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 26, 2006, 11:39:18 PM lol :D
I may have been pushing it on my next bet, I took Patriots to win at 1.27 when they turned over just now, I thought they got a TD :blonde: In my defence, I'm playing poker and only have half an eye on it! Thoughts on this game? It's pretty tight eh, I hear they are 1 and 2 in points not conceded or something like that :D Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 27, 2006, 12:11:40 AM what the hell are the Giants playing at??? 21-21 from 21-0!!
Come on Giants! Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 27, 2006, 01:21:00 AM I told you the Titans were absolute certanties
Its why this is such a wonderful game to be fair Vince Young, the titans QB is going to be an absolute superstar, single handedly turned that game round Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Newportlad on November 27, 2006, 08:42:13 PM Lol
Just read this thread. NFL is such a bad sport to bet on. Great sport to watch though. I would have staked my house on the Giants at 21-0 vs the awful Titans. I've bet on a few accumulators each week so far this season, and each week one of the certainties gets beat. Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 28, 2006, 11:23:29 AM NFL is such a bad sport to bet on. Its not really, you just have to completely avoid backing any team at short odds on cos they are occasionally bad value. The value comes from backing marginal underdogs in close contests. That said, Giants at 21-0 versus the Titans and then losing was a real jaw dropper! Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 28, 2006, 11:35:46 AM All bad tipsters have to be bad liars too, but have nevertheless to try and get away with it!
I did say the 49ers would recover this season though, came very close to beating the Rams on Sunday! Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: matt674 on November 28, 2006, 11:37:37 AM stoopid 49ers - 4 points up with 2 minutes to play and the rams on their own 15 yard line and they still blow it!!
with a chance to go above 500 as well >:( Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 28, 2006, 12:53:02 PM Going above 500 :dontask:
I watched a bit of Green Bay v Seattle last night. I'm getting in to this NFL mullarky. Not sure what it all means though :D I've been looking a bit on NFL.com but don't understand all the stats yet. I don't expect to know it all after only watching about 20 mins though :) Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: matt674 on November 28, 2006, 01:00:50 PM Going above 500 :dontask: Saying used by our friends across the pond to signify a team that has a record with more wins than losses. A few of the sports over there use statistics based on a thousand rather than your usual percentage of 100. For instance in baseball a batters average is based on a figure of 1000 but they insert the decimal point after the 1........ :dontask: :D so if he hits the ball every time then his batting average is 1.000 (or one thousand), the good hitters will probably hit the ball 35% of the time or as they call it in Amercia 0.350 (or as the commentator will say - "he's hitting three fifty for the season") Therefore when a team has a record of 5 wins and 5 losses they are said to be "playing 500" or 50% to the rest of the planet! There, clear as mud!! :)up I've been looking a bit on NFL.com but don't understand all the stats yet. If you want to watch American Sport its something you'll have to get used to - they have stats for how many toilet breaks they take during the half time interval!!! Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 28, 2006, 03:59:32 PM Those stats will take some getting used too. They do that with odds as well don't they - I can't work those out either.
So if I'm looking at stats for a NFL match, what should I be looking out for? What are the key indicators? Ta Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? So if I'm looking at stats for a NFL match, what should I be looking out for? What are the key indicators? Ta Yikes, to be honest it all depends on what your looking for i suppose. To be honest i dont bet on American Sports, i just watch them for pleasure (apart from basketball as i find that boring to watch) so i dont sit and study all the stats. As you are watching the sports and getting used to them then usually the stats they throw up on screen occasionally are sufficient to keep you interested in what is happening and as you get used to them you will understand what they mean. Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 28, 2006, 04:21:26 PM a very complicated question:
the inital key is the running game...who has the good rushing game in offense...yards per carry etc and which defenses can stop the run? Then look at the overall NFL.com stats, which are the best offensive and defensive teams...each will be ranked 1-32 on a series of measures. Look at the match ups and see if you spot any mismatches eg a good running team comes up against a bad rushing defense. In post seasons, defense and the running game are vital. It is often sdaid that defense wins championships. I'd look there first eg Chicago this year...so so offense but stellar defense, 10-1 record Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 28, 2006, 04:29:57 PM yes 9-2...Colts are 10-1
but it was the Bears offense throwing interceptions that blew it, not the defense Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: matt674 on November 28, 2006, 04:36:35 PM yeah - but then both teams gave away quite a few turnovers but then with two "iffy" offences playing against the ranked 1 and 2 defences it was hardly going to be an offensive extravaganza!!
One particular "strip" of the ball from the New England rookie running back Maroney was first class with him trying to explain it to the coaches on the sideline afterwards!! :)up Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 29, 2006, 09:00:47 AM Cheers for the info.
Been looking a bit into the Ravens v Bengals games (need to post the cute animal names to get to recognise them ;)) It seems as if both teams are quite similarly matched. Ravens are doing well at the moment though and have a good home and away record. If I had to bet now, I'd go for an away win but I think it will be fairly close, less than 7 points between them (although that crazy home crowd could be worth a couple of points ;) OK I made that bit up but it felt appropriate) I think I'll try and watch a few more games so things make a bit more sense to me and I get an idea on who's who. What does PF and PA stand for in the standings table please? Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: matt674 on November 29, 2006, 10:31:29 AM Cheers for the info. What does PF and PA stand for in the standings table please? For someone who doesnt know much at the moment you talk a good game ;) PF = Points For PA = Points Against I too would have to go with the Ravens for the thursday game, both teams coming off shutouts in week 12 but the Ravens was more impressive against the reigning champions the Pittsburgh Steelers where as the In the other meeting between the teams this season the Ravens stormed into a 17-0 lead before allowing the Monkey's key to the game: If the Ravens defence can keep Carson Palmer (Bungals QB) and Chad Johnson (Bungals WR) quiet they should go on to a comfortable victory :)up Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: TightEnd on November 29, 2006, 11:10:45 AM The Ravens are more consistent, have a premier defense and this year for the first time in many years have offensive threats since Steve McNair came across at QB
The Bengals are talented but inconsistent. Their particular weakness is run defense (Tomlinson and the Chargers put 41 second half points on them a fortnight ago) and the Ravens have a human tank, Jamal Lewis, coming from RB. Ravens for me in a low scoring game. However they are not likely to be great betting value at odds-on Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Newportlad on November 29, 2006, 07:40:26 PM Ravens for me in this one as well, in a low scoring game. Since Bill Bellichick took over the offensive play calling, the Ravens have gone back to their power running game, which means a lot of carries for Jamal Lewis, and using up a lot of the clock.
The Bengals have a potent deep passing game with Chad Johnson and TJ Housmenzadah (sp). Will QB Palmer get the time though to throw the deep passes? Doubtful. Bengals want a high scoring game, Ravens a low scoring bore. Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Graham C on November 30, 2006, 06:00:09 PM Seems to be a few doubtful players for the game tonight. I don't know who any of them are obvioulsy but I wonder how much of a difference it will make.
Also the weather is supposed to be lousy. Will this help for a low scoring game? I was thinking of betting under 44.5 pts. It could mean more scores I suppose. Who can tell? Not me that's for sure. Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: crip17 on November 30, 2006, 09:56:59 PM I have put 260 quid on the ravens at 2.65. I think you guys have talked me into it. ;sleep; 8)

Post by: matt674 on November 30, 2006, 10:22:25 PM to be honest i cant understand how all the bookies can have the bungals as favourites - i know they have home field advantage but i dont see it being that much of a factor.
Oh well - only time will tell! ;pokergods; Title: Re: Will the Giants beat the Titans? Post by: Newportlad on November 30, 2006, 11:05:02 PM I have a couple of quid on the Ravens as well (not £260 though) :o :o :o

Baltimore offense was pathetic and the worst defence in the league played out of their skins. stupid game!! |
