Title: Is this play too cute ?
Post by: Muahahahaha on November 30, 2006, 02:27:30 PM
Playing on Fulltilt 9 seater $10 STT. starting stack 1500.

1 player down

Blinds up to 25/50 I'm in the cutoff with AA & a stack of 1800.

position 4 raises to 175 ( leaving 900 behind ) , pos 6 calls ( leaving 950 behind ). Pot now 425

Now I'm trying to think.  I want to get one stack  all in with the other folding. Pos 6 has got at least 2 big cards or a pair.  Pos 4, I really don't know, I haven't noticed him much yet.  Which means he's not a loose , busy player, but that's about as far as I've got.  ( My analysis is about as good as Tk's alarm when he should be playing ).

I want to just go all in, but is that going to scare them off?  It's a hellofa raise from 175.  But if I only raise to 500 I probably won't scare either of them off, & they'll be getting some kind of odds to call.

So I stuck in 800.  If they call they leave 300 & 350 behind respectively.  Which would be stupid, wouldn't it ?   I'm expecting a fold & a re-raise all in, or vice versa.  If they both go all in, it's not the end of the world, though. Is it?

They both called.  ( confused me - does that make any sense ? ). Pot now 2475

Flop KJx, rainbow.  They both check.  Now that wasn't the flop I wanted.  One of them might have called with AK-AJ, but the other must have a big pair. So am I looking at trip kings ?  Even if I check, the other 300 & 350 will be going in at some point.  So I wade all in, all guns blazing.  They both call, & turn over JJ & QQ respectively.

QQ goes out, I'm down to 600 & mrJJ is laughing all the way to the bank.

Could I have saved myself that last 300 ?  Should I just have bitten the bullet & gone All in preflop ? Was I just too smartarsey for my own good ?

Votes & opinions , please

They'd have both called preflop if you'd have stuck it in and obviously you can't be folding AA preflop.  Slow playing can catch you out.  Just got unlucky imo.

You have to stick the last 300 in that pot, it's the law. Especially how it's not your last 300.

I'd argue that you practically did put them all-in pre-flop. In a pot that size, with the bubble still miles off, they are commited.

Your read that they both had large pairs was spot on this time (although I prefer to think of JJ as a small pair) but will never be 100% in a $10 STT. So often the other folk will flip AK, AQ, and even AJ in these situations.

So in conclusion......Pre-flop was perfect, flop played itself, 50p in the bad beat tin please. :)

I've moved it to save you further abuse from the 'wrong forum Nazi's!' (especially that known troublemaker, NoFlops!)

This early in a STT I'm inclined to shove here as there are always people around who will call regardless.  Given the two hands I doubt either of them would've passed.

At least that way you get to say I got my money in ahead!

At this level, even if you push preflop people won't fold QQ and JJ here. It's just a simple fact.

A simply delicious fact.

Wrong-forum Nazi, love it  :D

In that case I might have to ban you!  Take it back!

I meant the "known" part, I liked to think I always had a mysterious quality... ::)

Nicely back-tracked.  You can stay.

Thanks for the 'realignment' Mr Fatman ( Do I need a 'Sir' ?  ;) - Or maybe just a chant of '' You fat b****rd'' a few times [ that wasn't you, was it ?])

After what Tk said last night on pnl, I was wondering if I should have pushed pre flop.  But i don't like to agree with him too often, it makes me look like a groupie  ( Also I've heard rumours that he has been known to talk tosh, more than occasionally )

No, it wasn't me but I've been called it often enough anyway!

For anyone who hasn't got a clue what he's taking about, Carter USM's gigs in the early days used to start with a guy called Jon Beast coming on stage (usually topless or in fancy dress) to chants of "You fat b*****d" from the crowd.  It became a bit of a signature for the band for a while.  Happy days!

just find a way to get your stack in the middle, be it pre or post flop.

You played this hand well. The preflop raise is the perfect size. Nothing you can do after the flop.

In a $10 game even if you go all in pre, QQ & JJ will call and overcall. One time in three you will be outdrawn here. Very unlucky to have such big hands against you that can improve, but obviously you did want their action as you were the clear favourite. Impossible to get away from really, but the beauty of the stt is forget about the hand and just load up another.

Incidentally, you said that the 425 in the pot was not enough to win. Sure its nice if you can get at least one opponent to stick all his stack in the middle as a massive dog  to you, but remember that you have AA and that is just one pair. If you push and they pass, then you have increased your stack by 25% uncontested and you should never be disappointed with that.
