ok yesterday i was off work,went for a haircut,tipped 10%. got a cab to meet my girlfriend,tipped 20%. we did some shopping and then went for ameal, tipped 15%.   when i raturned home the concierge had a dhl delivery fir me,i gave him a fiver. especilly at this time of year tipping never seems to end,i wondered who and how much blondes tip? or even has any1 recieved an extraordinary  tip- i know the last sentence is open 2 thread hijack-try 2 restrain yourselves guys!!

i once got tipped a bottle of louis tres brandy, the guy buying it just said and 'have one yourself'. i naturally enquired 'a glass?' and he clarified that he meant a bottle.

i don't particularly like brandy so my grandad and his pals enjoyed it round at the community centre.

I tip a pound when my pizza gets delivered.

Depending on how much I spend I ussually tip %'s (10-15 being quiteb common) if a taxi is 7.50 to8£ it's a tenner though..same for food deliveries.

I was gonna start a tipping thread but I've seen them on 2+2 turning into slagging matches. I was interested to know how much people tip the pizza driver. I always tip a pound but I used to deliver pizzas 15 years ago and used to get tipped a pound a reasonable amount of the time so I should probably be tipping more now. Or do people tend to give a percentage like 10 or 15% and round it up or down to the nearest pound or something?

Also do people tip their postman and dustmen at Christmas? Our postman is in his 50s or 60s and does what looks like a really hard job, but giving him a card with a fiver in it seems more like a sick joke than a tip, even £10 to a 60 year old seems rubbish but £20 seems too much to me. i'm thinking about leaving a box of Stella out for the dustmen but I'm worried about it getting stolen also we have 2 dustmen the normal ones and the recycling ones so I guess that's one box on each dustbin?

Very interested in what other people do but I hope it doesn't turn into a "You're a cheap B****** if you don't tip" "WTF I don't tip anyone they get paid to do their job" "I'm sooo rich I tip everyone eleventy billion" snoozefest of a thread.

This is a subject which really, really gets to me.

Why should we be expected to tip people just for doing their job?

You get your haircut. You pay to have it done. Why should the geezer get a tip on top of his wage for doing his job?

Even more for a taxi driver. they EXPECT a tip. They are (usually) self employed and get 100% of your fare.

I only tip when I consider service is exceptional.

I would far rather give the money that most people would tip to a homeless person or a charity.

I don't tip at all, its just against my rationale.

When I'm driving in London I spend half my time cursing and swearing at the inconsiderate and selfish driving of taxi drivers.

It would be hypercritical in the extreme for me to tip a taxi driver them when I am forced to use them.

Sorry if I am making this thread a snoozefest, but I have never had this debate on a messageboard.

You shouldn't feel expected to and if you do thats your problem and your insecurity, not society's

I'd propose that a reason for tipping when expected but not deserved is that its a simply a nice thing to do, people that are tipped regularly, such as fast food delivery drivers, cab drivers and barbers dont earn a fortune and its just a NICE thing to do, THEY just might appreciate it

I'm fine with people not tipping. I don't tip when it's clearly expected...like when I'm in a restaurant and it say "A service charge of 15% has been included in the price, but we suggest a 10% tip" (I've seen that a lot) I take that 15% off immediatly and won't pay it nor will I give the 10% They can kiss my hiney. But delivery guys and taxi drivers I ussually do tip but mainly because I can't be bothered with change.

Also if service has been rubbish I don't tip.

i'd rather give to a homeless person than most charities because at least i know where it goes (i know this isn't tipping just giving but hey ho).

I'm a postman and yes i do get tips at Xmas. i used to have my own delivery but now i rotate around a few deliveries.

when i had my own delivery i got £235, bottles of wine, a bottle of bells whiskey, chocolates and lager.I actually feel a little embarrassed when i get tips, sometimes it can be quite awkward. People say "oh hold on a Minute" and go back into their house to get something or "can you knock the door tomorrow postman"

As for tipping, i think i sometimes tip too much, for example i tipped the hairdresser a fiver last time i went.

If i get a takeaway i only tip a £1 to the driver which seems like a little but i haven't had the food by then what happens if its crap.

taxis i tend to round up to the pound and then add a pound so if a taxi is £4.80 i give him £6. Restaurants round up to the next £5

yep 90% of the time you will know that your money is on its way to the nearest off license or drug  dealer ...

Of coure 10% of the time it will be spent on food or clothing.

I also think that a failure to tip when expected reflects poorly on the individual, how he feels about himself and how he's perceived by others, Its a philosophy, a way of life, I'd think someone that didn't tip when expected(not asked for as boldie pointed out) was cheap and sad.

none of my pals or family would act in such a way, nor would i be expected to and i'd be pulled up by a lot of people if i was paying for a cab somewhere and i was paying and didn't tip, its just a liberty.

The only thing i can imagine at present thats sadder than not tipping when expected is moaning about it as well.

9:30.....lay in a urine soaked door way for 1/2 an hour

10:00....UEREKA!!!! someones given them a tenner, hhhhhhhmmmmmm..........now what to do with that tenner??? wait till primark opens in the morning and get a nice v neck jumper or go and get mashed to try and forget the last 2 hours of their living hell life thats been the same way for years and set to continue?

I wouldn't tip the postman because he only brings me bills and junk mail (tons of 'em) and i wouldn't tip the dustmen because i have to take my own rubbish to the end of the street or they won't take it and if they don't like the look of the bag they leave it anyway.

I live in Sutton Surrey, as I say our postman is pretty old, does a great job and is always friendly whenever I speak to him. I don't think our dustmen are supposed to take wheely bins that have so much stuffed into them that the lid doesn't close or binbags left next to them. They do take them though which was especially helpful when our daughter was in nappies. I have done a couple of jobs where I was very grateful for getting tips.

It's funny i suppose but if you put a split bag out they leave it yet if i buy a binman from my local pub a drink he'll come and take away anything i leave out!!

My wife tend to lead the way on how our family tip. She American and likes to tip if the service has been of an excellent standard else they get abuse  :)  ;bumwiggle;

Sounds fair to me.  If I get a taxi, and it doesn't arrive late, he's courteous and has a clean car, etc. - then he'll get a tip.  If it's at the end of the night, it's usually a hefty one from all the shrapnel left over.  If the driver is rude, the taxi's filthy, or he turns up late - then he doesn't get a tip. 

Similar situation in restaurants.

The situation in America is slightly different - in that the service is an essential part of their pay, and the wage they receive takes into account the tips they'll get.  I suppose it could be argued it's the same in the UK, but if I get crap service from them, then their wages aren't going to be supplemented.

But then again, I'm a tight Yorkshireman...

A simple question- who" expects this"- the barber/taxi driver/etc? society ( not all of us by the sounds of it), and why? what is a tip for? good service?- I dont have a huge problem with this- for doing their job, which I am already paying for? cant quite get my head round the logic? who decides who gets tipped? probably started by the  tippees(is this a word?) themselves. Why dont we tip shop assistents in woolworths or in the charity shop ( probably low paid/ volounteers)? I work in the NHS hopefully  helping to ease peoples pain etc, definately not a well paid job, and I certainly would not expect a tip. If we get a box of choclates they get shared ( and are gratefully recieved) however we are not allowed to accept gifts/ money other than this and any recieved goes to the department (to buy books etc.

I knoe there are a few points here but they are genuine questions  as to what the thinking behind tipping is.

PS I do tip(10%) particually in restaurants, but not if I am unhappy in any way with the service.  Am I merely bowing to peer/ society pressure?

I only tip in restaurants if the service is really good. I don't really tip anyone else... I should be ashamed

i never meant by posing the question of tipping to bring about a debate as to should/shouldnt i tip. i think that whatever the reasons are for or against are purely personal and justification seems banal either way. i was really trying to find out a sort of list of who gets tpped, for "whatever reasons " mine seems massive-apart from those mentioned i also tip-removal men,paperboy,cocktail waitresses(excessively),bar staff,delivery drivers (of larger items) dealers-croupiers,doormen,car valet....

how much do you tip the people who park your car at the Vic? Do you tip twice ie the guy who parks it and the guy who retreives it or just the second bloke?

I'm not saying that Edinburgh ppl are careful with their money, but when I tipped a waitress who brought me a coffee at the Scottish Open in the Maybury, she said "Whats that for?"

I tip in resturants, but Sophie always moans at me as she thinks i am a stinggie tipper, with just a few quid.  better than a kick in the teeth, thats wat i say!

We have a no tip policy at my clinic. We get paid well for our jobs, and the client has paid for us to do a good job. Why should they give us extra?
I always tip waitresses at the casino though - if it means I get my hot chocolate before you I'll pay whatever it takes.
