Title: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: patman on September 12, 2005, 09:18:06 AM Ladies and Gents
My wife god love her is starting a post grad course of which she`ll get 100% support from me ....for 8 months most of which is on line..this however scuppers my poker on line efforts. so, Any recommendations for laptops which are the job for on line poker. I would prefer wireless ready or capable. I would (no scottish jokes) to spend no more than 450 approx. i will not really be using the laptop for anything else exept the odd bit of surfing etc. thanks in advance Title: Re: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: action man on September 12, 2005, 09:30:51 AM imo, youre best getting a decent £2000 lap top and paying for it on credit, You can use your poker winnings to pay the monthly installments, if you can't make them then you know your poker needs improving. This way you may be able to multitable without having to overlap, by obtaining a larger monitor/screen.

Title: Re: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: patman on September 12, 2005, 10:04:52 AM ah,
tanls so far the old ying and yang so far...i`m with tight end on the budget bit thats why i was asking on value buys. If i spent 2k on the kit and then hit a bad run i`d end up owing on the laptop and having nowt to play with. I already know i am still learning poker but i`d rather improve by being in the black and using winnings than having the pressure of a payment hanging over me. I will be using some of my limited bankroll to buy it as it is a poker investment but i`m not going into debt for it...thats a mugs game. seen too many folk end up down the slippery road..if i cant buy for cash or 0% to get cash back etc then it can wait. so any actual kit recommendations dell?, hp?..currys? I'd avoid any high street stores. My friend has used and recommended the Dell Outlet Store. (http://www.dell.co.uk/outlet). It's refurbished Dells with warranty etc, I think most of them are almost brand new anyway (things like cancelled orders etc). Title: Re: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: Nem on September 12, 2005, 12:24:59 PM I bought a second hand Pentium 4 Laptop off of ebay a year ago for £450 from a company called T.A.M, i've had no problems so far and it works perfectly for playing poker, web-browsing etc....
A lot of companies sell computers and laptops with warranty on ebay, make sure they have decent enough feedback and then you can't go wrong. Title: Re: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: RED-DOG on September 12, 2005, 01:05:11 PM I bought an Acer Travelmate 4500 for just under £1000 about a year ago (they are quite a bit cheaper now) It rocks

Title: Re: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: Sheriff Fatman on September 12, 2005, 03:31:30 PM Depending on how portable you want the thing to be I'd recommend either the Dell Inspiron 6000 (15") or 9300 (17"). The spec doesn't have to be massive for online poker but programs such as Poker Tracker will increase the demands on the machine if you use it.
Whichever you go for, opt for the WUXGA screen, which has a 1920x1200 resolution. This'll let you play 4 tables without overlap if you want to. There are very few laptops on the market with screen resolutions this high, which is why the Dells stand out for me. I got a 9300 recently from the Dell Outlet store and saved £350 on the new price (you still get full warranties). The site updates every few minutes so just keep an eye out for one with a spec that suits you and then buy it quick! Sheriff TXS....a junior fish like me has a hard enough time playing one or 2 so 4 would be donation time. the dell looks good but i also had a look at red dog recommendation at the acer 4500 and that looks value at about 470 notes. Just purchased this little beauty myself last week mate, great wee thing!Whichever you go for, opt for the WUXGA screen, which has a 1920x1200 resolution. Sheriff Screen, as you say, is the major factor in my decision, i got a deal through my work tho, (tax free etc etc) ;) Title: Re: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: snoopy1239 on September 12, 2005, 05:45:18 PM Buying PC Shopper would be a worthwhile investment.
Title: Re: wife becomes a student - husband requires a laptop...help please Post by: Bongo on September 12, 2005, 05:51:19 PM You could always buy a laptop woth a smaller screen and then buy another screen and plug the laptop into that.
If portability isn't an issue but space is you could always buy a very small desktop PC. You'll get a lot more PC for your money (in general). |
