Title: Re: Worlds Greatest Tournament Post by: Graham C on December 04, 2006, 11:44:43 AM I loved the World Cup and I probably shouldn't say it but I'd love it if Sky had coverage of the matches. I think some of the commentary on the BBC and ITV (especially ITV) is appalling. I appreciate they are piggy backing on other peoples pictures but no one does footy like Sky.
The World Cup is the best for me, a whole month of football. I get a bit disappointed when the group games are finished and we're down to one game a day at best but it's a fantastic tournament. That and the Olympics. The Olympics for me has so many subplots and fantastic stories. Title: Re: Worlds Greatest Tournament Post by: Teacake on December 04, 2006, 02:43:43 PM The World Cup isn't even the best tournament in football, the Champions League is far superior IMO.

So much wierd and wondeful pisch you've never heard of, but get into every four years. I don't know what Olympic comissioner was bribed to allow Beach Volleyball to get in, but god bless his corruptness coz that s*** is awesome. There's even something for the missus, she can watch the Aswell as the bizarre, there's the true litmus tests of our species. The 100m sprint where the fastest c*** in the world is crowned. The heavyist class of weightlifting, where the strongest c*** in the world is honored, and lawn bowling where we discover who the saddest c*** in the world is. If the Americans didn't always win, it would be even more fantastic. A per capita medal table should be introduced in some crazy Sky graphic, just to gove Togo a reason to get more excited. (and to piss of the Welsh that they play as Great Britain) Seriously though, it's one of the few things where England and Scotland can put aside their differences for a few weeks and compete under the same flag. I knew of no little kid in Aberdeen, who was ABLC. (Anyone but Linford Christie) Long live the 'lympics. ;surrender; Title: Re: Worlds Greatest Tournament Post by: Colchester Kev on December 04, 2006, 03:25:07 PM I was a great fan of the olympics in days gone by, Ovett & Coe and then Cram etc etc ... but now all i can do is watch it with suspiscion thinking that anyone who does really well is pumped up on some banned substance or another ... the olympics despite their values and ideals are sadly tainted .

I would have to say either the Ryder Cup or The World Series of poker. The Ryder Cup is brilliant viewing. And in the wsop, not only the main event, i love tracking the progress of all the top players, and all the blondes. The world cup is ok, but England are over-rated and full of players from all the top teams like Chelsea and Man Utd, teams which i dislike strongly. That's true in many of the events, but not so much in others. I was going to point out Paula Rafcliffe, but the Olympics is the one medal she is still in the hunt for. The amount of time and effort some athletes put in to get to where they are (like Paula) is immense. But when you see them line up for the 100m final, those thoughts do go through my mind. Which is sad really. They just appear to be, as more of the perpetrators (steroids, collusion, multi-accounting etc) are caught. When they are, big story, all over the global press for everyone to have a good tut. I mean, you want proper nine bob note territory, you gotta go and look at the Berlin Olympics in the 30s. The good old days gone by weren't that rosy at all. Going back even further, I mean they all used to play in the nip didn't they, how bent is that. ;) It's probably tougher now than it ever was to scam a gold medal. 2) Euro Cup 3) Winter Olympics 4) Summer Olympics World Cup has to be #1. I just don't see myself getting nearly as excited about the olympics as about the world cup to be honest. Was fantastic this year, saw the Germany-Argentina match outside on a hotel terrace with lots of friends and all my former teachers (was my younger brothers' graduation day), which was a little strange but a great atmosphere. It's a whole month of football, you always get the great side-plot (south-korea in 2002 or ghana this year, anyone?), nobody ever expects anything from the German team, which makes every victory even sweeter, there's enough time to teach your girlfriend all the names of the Swedish team and she _will_ know the offside rule. Hour long auto-corsos (or whatever the word for that is in English) after every game, drinking with police officers in the streets, learning lots of new football songs and loosing your voice the day after the group stage. It's just the best time of your life and happens every two years (Euro is almost as good). If you're still not convinced: THE song for the worldcup. Makes more sense if you understand the lyrics, but I suppose the title gives the main concept away. Now I know most of them and I still watch every game) and of course The Olympics (Winter is better but summer is great too) - When Canada beat the USA in Salt Lake City in the final of the mens and womens ice hockey it was my proudest moment as a Canadian. Title: Re: Worlds Greatest Tournament Post by: Canuck on December 05, 2006, 06:16:49 PM About 8 years ago Fox Sports, to cope with American fans not being able to follow the puck on the screen, introduced a glow puck which was a specially designed puck with electronic gadgets and gizmos in it which allowed computers to track its progress. When the puck traveled at an average speed ie player carrying it or passing it, the puck would glow blue. If the puck traveled fast ie a shot, it went red.
It was a massive joke in Canada and many beer adverts made fun of it. I have watched and played hockey since before I can remember. I was on skates before I could walk. And its weird because I have no problem following it, yet it is a problem for many new or not too familiar with the game which is unfortunate. It is the best sport to watch, play and follow. 'Soccer' has nothing on it. Title: Re: Worlds Greatest Tournament Post by: thetank on December 05, 2006, 06:28:59 PM Do they play Ice Hockey in Sweden?

In England, when you fly over built up areas and you look down, you can see loads of footy pitches. In Sweden, it's like that but for ice hockey. for drama... I've seen nothing better than the end of season playoffs to get into the Premier League... there has been some absolute classics, as well as some total drama in the other playoff finals ( I certainly cant forget Man City's comeback 2-0 down with 1 min + injury time to go and go on to win on penalties.. watching replays today STILL brings a lump to my throat) for entertainment value... nothing like the NHL/NBA/MLB all star games... overall tho... it HAS to be the Olympics... so many sports.. so many amazing stories.. and soooo many bloody funny events ( one that springs to mind is USA losing at basketball/baseball!!) (headteachers) Jesus they pay their teachers a lot of dosh in this country. and then I found out why...you have to be nuts to be a teacher these days. Kids get away with murder and if you're a bloke people look at your funny because you work with kids (apparently a lot of male teachers are now quitting because of the countries obsession with spotting peadophiles everywhere). Respect to everyone that does it on a daily basis..Lord knows I wouldn't move into teaching unless it was at a uni.
