Somehow someone got hold of my ATM card number/PIN, cloned my card and sent this to some guy in Tunisia who has been walking around various ATM machines helping themselves to my cash!  Apparently this is not an uncommon thing but it took me by surprise.  Fortunately the bank is not holding me responsible and replacing all of the cash that was taken from my account.  Not sure how you can protect yourself against this but I thought I'd just pass on the heads up letting you know how easy it is to be a victim.

Someone stole my credit card a while back and went on a mad spendin spree.

An common way for people to get hold of info is in foreign restaurants where they take the card away from you at the table to process it.  I've been specifically warned by locals not to allow them to do this in places such as Budapest and Instanbul.  Make sure you keep the card in your sights at all times.

NB: The same probably applies in UK restaurants.  I've had at least several instances of phantom transactions appearing over the past few years. Fortunately, all have been resolved eventually.

Garages also. Read a while back some workers at a certain garage had a card copier disguised as a swipe machine and cloned loadsa cards

This happened to me recently - the bank immediately spotted it as I happened to use the card in London on the same day that two cash withdrawals were made in Milan.

Sherrif's right - I have had two groups of friends had cards cloned after using their cards in a UK restaurant or bar.

I never use my card to pay for anything. I use it to get money, and I use the money to pay for things.

The bank think it was copied when I used it at an ATM machine to withdraw some cash when I was in Singapore since these withdrawals happened 2 days after this.  Apparently they can slip a reader into the slot on the ATM and someone positions themselves to read your PIN when you key it in.  All in all it is quite scary how easy this happens.  Hard to imagine how much cash it taken in such a manner on a global basis each year.

I caught part of a late-night tv programme the other night highlighting how a card can be copied, in the UK, by a waitress - it involved casually swiping the card, to apparently clean it, on the waistband/pocket of her money apron before proceeding with the actual payment transaction - it was also carried out by the staff member pretending to bend down to pick something up/tie a showlace/etc., and casually swipe it against a copying device attached to the ankle.......... Unfortunately I did not see the whole programme, catch the channel or the name of the programme.
