Title: Stop spammers?
Post by: Acidmouse on December 11, 2006, 01:06:32 PM
I know other forums have this feature but I would be interested to know why/if it can me implemented on Blonde?

When someone joins the forums thay have to wait 24hrs to be able to make a post. Cuts out 99% of spammers.

It probably cuts out 50% of prospective new members too...

Most of blonde's (genuine) new sign-ups arrive via live update threads.  Not allowing them to speak would defeat the object of getting them to sign up.

We have a number of anti-spam measures in place, but we have to stop short of measures which potentially impact the genuine sign-ups too.

I don't see how waiting to post puts anyone off, if they want to join they will. If you look at most of the members on this forum how many posted the day they joined? Well if you don't mind deleting spam threads all day I guess this don't matter.

More and more spammers now seem to join up a few days before making their first post, so i doubt this would work for too long - the downsides could be quite big though!

The mystery here is that the incidence of follks joining blonde specifcally to spam increased dramatically about 4 weeks ago. From 1 or 2 a week, it suddenly went to 5 or 6 a day, almost instantly. Why?

We are examaning every possible solution but our policy is embedded in Sheriff's reply really.

In the meantime, we apologise for the hassle these time-wasters cause everyone.

The reason you get more spammers is becasue the more popular/links in search engines Blonde has? i guess they use spidering (is that a word?) software to troll popualr sites/forums to spam.

 ;iagree;

How many times has someone joined to ask Jen or Snoopy, "How is so-and-so getting on?" And then stayed and become a full member.

Thanks, but that does not answer why we had the sudden increase in spammers - it literally happened ovenight!

As most of them are automated then i'd guess that someone released a new spambot around that time.

someone reach tikay to count please

it was one or 2 spams a month to 30-40 a day

but most blondes sign up while reading a live update and wanting to wish there friend well

so the 24 hour rule would be wrong

hopefully the new web team will be starting soon

i KNOW they are much more techinally minded than i'll ever be

and they will have the abilty to add a few new features to the forum secuirity that i have wanted to install for a few weeks

What happened to sparks and bream?

Nothing "happened" as such, but they were unable to devote the time to blonde that I needed them to. Once Dave moved on, I had to make a number of changes, & sorting out Bream & Sparks was one of them. They were owed a lump of money, & I agreed I would get them paid up, & we would engage new Techies who had the necessary time I believe is needed to progress blonde to the next level.

We will part on excellent terms, & I am most grateful to them for being so patient while I found the cash to pay them off. (Pay their bill, that is). The "handover" will take place later this week.
