Title: World Of Warcraft
Post by: Newmanseye on December 13, 2006, 09:21:37 AM
I saw the advert last week for the 10 day free trial of World of Warcraft and decided to give it a wee bash, I did used to play a lot of the original warcraft many moons ago and thought this would be a bit of fun.

Having resurfaced after nonstop slaying of orcs, murlock raiders and forrest Gnolls I can honestly say I'm re-addicted, This game is one to try for  the gamers, I have been neediung to take a break from poker anyways and this seems to give me the avenue to do it.

I highly reccomend you immerse yourself in this game if you like online gaming of this type.

Only drawback i can see so far is the server downtime, if this could be avoided then there would be no visable downside to this game.

Anyway I better get some sleep before the game servers come online.

Cheers

Billy

Weekly Maintance is every Wed, generally 5am-11am Unless their is a patch like last week (Patch 2.0 12hrs downtime).

If you fancy some help or cash come on terenas server and look for Acidmouse.

WoW's first expansion comes out 16th Jan 07 so I think they are trying to get lots of peeps to sign up to buy that.

Having managed to resist buying this game since its release due to fears of losing poker time to it the words 'free trial' proved to be my downfall.

My 18yr old is into this big time...he was like a kid at Christmas when his extension pack arrived today.

He showed me the waiting area outside the portal at 10.50pm....thousands of them waiting for 11pm LOL.

Trouble is his PC cant cope with the extention so he has HAD to ordered a new tower (in his words)...thank god he works now.

He did show me a video clip of a race that was organised on a forum that was very funny...hundreds of wee monsters in a marathon.....think I will stick to poker.

Lol, i made 60 on my Warlock lastnight and i ventured in to the Ol for the first time, Epic place, I need to start earning gold though, the scourge of gold sellers has a real grip on our server so prices are just silly for most stuff, I makedo with drops and tend to avoid the AH unless i'm selling, The old epic gear still sells for 250g for some of it, its just daft

I'm gonna start grinding gold now and hopefully make 70 at some point this week.

Just by grinding anf doing quests 60-70 I made about 2k from vendor drops and selling all the loot. If your skint just do questing and normal leveling. Money drops alot better :)

pfff, reading all these posts makes me want to get back into it. I used to play Half life CS when I first started playing poker, kept me away from the tables in the loss making days.
My mate is making about £100/day on Eve. Every conversation with him is a humming fridge babble of 'LSK ship region clan blah blah ebay 8 billion guns upgrades battleships trillions blah blah'. Some people employ teams of dozens just to go around building up ships and selling them off for thousands...

Ah, CS, been playing that since 2000 when the 7.1 version was released before it got a retail release, 1.6 has to be my fave in comparison to CS:Source, although the physics are damn fun.

Fave maps, De_Vegas and Cs_Thunder, ah, they take me back.

I ended up being quite useful with the Krieg and MP5.

Played in a couple of clans, [EEV] being the best and getting quite igh in ED league.

lol. For me, at the time, gaming was as good as poker...exciting, and direct competition against other people, filled the same hole.
I don't think you can make money directly from half life CS unless you're in a pro clan.

Quake II was superb, well ahead of its time, without having to rely on super-realistic graphics. Atmospheric levels, great baddies (big angry fat guy with chainsaw), great weapons for multiplayer. Mods were great, I used to grapple hook myself to the ceiling and just pipe bomb any passerby.

Righto, you can make real cash from MMORPG's like EVE, WOW, EQ2, etc, by selling in game items and currency to people.  There are online sites that only sell WOW Gold, characters and items for some good money and the economy of the virtual world of Everquest 2 actually is greater than some real countries.

Now, games like UT, CS and Quake provide the oppotunity to make cash in a couple of ways.  1, Become a PRO, this is where the serious money is made, the top English team is 4Kings and Jonathan Wendell has made a nice living by being probaly the top FPS gamer.  2, There are some sites that allow you to wager on a game, if you feel you can beat the other guy, put your money where your mouth is.  3, Some other sites pay by the "Frag" (Kill) on certain games and servers.

Like real life, just not real. But like it in most other respects. You want a sofa? Go to dfs, they make them, send them to you: you want to furnish your living room on Second Life? Some dude in japan just sits all day making virtual goods and selling them for Second Life. Loads of people now do this as a job. Very very weird. There's even an official exchange rate gamedollars>US$.
They're all listed here: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/sort/genre/gameID/0
Free golf MM game:

Speaking of WOW, I remember watching the news just after Hurricane Katrina: thousands of people lost their homes and possessions. The first news alert I saw was about the devastation and hold up on the relief efforts. The second news alert was a statement from Blizzard saying stranded people who were WOW players needn't worry, they would put their accounts on hold until they got settled. These people were clinging to trees ffs!

Second life is a ****ing joke, its so laggy and dull. No its not like real life, its for saddo's additional no life.

Firstly you need a shit hot speed graphics card and fast broadband, also the servers are often bottlenecked at peak times and you cant enter most popular zones because there full?!

After you have spent 4-5hrs in the place you realise thats it, unless you go to a strip club or porn shop for a laugh very little to do.

Go to a chatroom if you want a giggle or play a real online game.

I have to say getting flying mount is soooo much fun, you can quest alot easier just dropping in on hard to get to loc's and there are around 4 zones/area's unreachable without your own griff.

Also at 70 questing is very profitable, you earn a standard 11g for any quest you complete and I did one last night that rewarded me with 30g + a nice item.

Saving 4k now for epic flying mount jeez halfway there.

My heads hurting, so apologies if this has already been explained on the thread already.

I currently pay for both my two to play on Runescape, but for the past 6 weeks or so my youngest keeps rattling on about WoW.  He wanted to spend £15 on some disk to be able to play it on the PC.  I did try to get him on the Free Trial, but seemed to get stuck in an eternal html active link that never actually enabled him to sign up for it.

I can't get my head around why an online game would need a CD Rom as well.

Can someone please explain to me what WoW is, how it works, how much it should cost, why it needs a CD-Rom and if it is any better than Runescape which costs me £3.20 a month each ? ? ?

I would be much obliged.

Simple speak tho please, cos I dont think my head could cope with much more.

xx

The discs are for the licence or product Key.

Installing from the discs is probably a bit quicker too, and WOW is a phenomenal game, well worth the £8 per month.

Title: Re: World Of Warcraft
Post by: Sheriff Fatman on March 02, 2007, 09:55:34 AM
Trace - its as Billy describes.

You need to buy the original game (~£15) nowadays to install the software.  After that, you pay £8-9 per month subscription to the servers.  The game purchase gives you 30 days subscription.

Be careful if you're buying the game yourself though (I assume the kids know what to get).  They've now released an add-on game called 'The Burning Crusade' which adds extra features to the first game.  Make sure you don't buy this, as it needs the original game to be there first.  At some point I think you'll get asked to buy that too, but the features are mostly aimed at keeping the higher level players interested so its not necessary for the first few months of play.  The add-on is still selling for its full price, so ~£25 for that, when they eventually ask you to buy it!

The only problem with this is the time to download it - took me 17 hours, followed by another 5 for the patches.

With hindsight, I'd have nipped to the shop and spent the £15 straight away!

Thanks for this info guys!

I don't think my youngest realises on the £8-£9 a month bit, this is what I was concerned about.

I'm gonna have to give this one a bit more thought.

So would be a good idea to buy the trial pack from a shop, let him have a go, keep him quiet for a month, and then let the rows start up again just in time for his 11th Birthday!!? ?  ?

Worth it for the months peace and quiet me thinks.

Thanks chaps!

Yep I would do that, although I would say WoW can be a pretty nasty place, lots of utter pricks spamming abuse on the channels and some adult stuff.

He's got me for a mother - he can handle it!!  lol

I let him sit and watch "Puppetry of the Penis" with me the other day - the look on his face added double amusement to what those guys were doing!!

On that note  if you haven't ever seen said Puppetry  it's a must see.....

I caught Jake watching them last week Russ.

I couldn't tell him off 'cos he was laughing too much, so I left him to it!

Not played for 6 weeks or so and my latest subscription has expired so I'm currently locked out.

Level 43 at the time I think, but what little spare time I have is going on poker for now.

Well I am positive that Tikay has been spotted on a train Raiding Karahzan with his Toon "the fat controler".

And Kev must have the "piemucher" which is on my server.

If if "GIT"  is not flushy then i am seriously stumped.
