Tit is an understatement. Unless you can carry off a good pair of designer sunglasses you really shouldnt be wearing them.

I think you may aswell just wear a sign on your head saying 'dead money'

I spend a high percentage of my life in front of my computer. When I go to a live cardroom I sometimes find them a little bright and my eyes get tired if I sit there for any longer than 6 or 7 hours (rare in a tournament for me I admit). I find myself getting headaches if I sit in a bright cardroom because of this. I wear sunglasses for this reason and this reason only, if you think I look a tit fine- I ain't trying to look good for you, its a necessity for me.

I think it depends. Sunglasses look good on some people. Some people wear them for practical reasons. Some people for a little confidence boost.

Marcel Luske can even pull off wearing them them upside down!

Not everyone at a poker table can match your sartorial elegance flushie  ;m3boy;   :D

Oops......

For the last 3 weeks, I've been wearing shades at the table.......

My eyesight has become so poor, that in seats 2, 3, 8 & 9 I can just about see if the board cards are paint or non-paint, red or black. I have NO chance of seeing the diference between, say,  8c and   8s.....

So I got myself some new specs, & they offered me a pair of prescription shades free of charge. Well, free with the £600 I'd just spent.....

Anyway, I've seen all the cool dudes wearing shades (you seen the two guys in Chips?) so I've joined them by way of "trying it out", hoping I'd look super sexy, & women would throw themselves at my feet. The jury is out so far, there have been a limited number of such incidents. Very limited, actually, but I imagine they are just shy.

Actually, whisper it quietly, I think, in many cases, flushy is right.

As for the donks who imitate Marcel by wearing shades upside down, I must say, they DO look complete tits. I must try it.

I would wear sunglasses at the table, I don't give a monkeys what I look like, I just like to watch people without them knowing I'm watching.

I don't wear them because I can't see the cards on the board properly.

Marcel wears them upside down so that his eyes are hidden, but he can still see the cards by peeking beneath them.

What a vain, judgemental lot you are. (except me)

Against unknowns i think it gives an edge... a lot of people give you 0 respect for wearing sunglasses at the table this can be used to your advantage...

As for looking like a tit...

I agree with you flushy. sunglasses at the poker table are daft. I tried wearing them at my home games a while ago to see what it felt like and I have to admit it is comfortable. As Reddog said you get to study who ever you like without them knowing.

It you stare intensely at someone it's confrontational. if you are staring at someone and they turn and stare back the animal instinct gives both parties an uncomfortable feeling. one has to look away or the hackles go up.
So I can understand why people like to wear them. It's a barrier against that feeling. I decided that I'd learn to be comfortable without that barrier. you can get a lot of information from how people react when they know you're watching them, much more than if they don't know I think. I think concealing your true feelings about your hand is a big part of poker and I think hoods, shade and caps pulled low are an easy solution or at least an aid to this difficult part of the game. Thats part of the reason Im so against over use of the string bet rule. if some one makes a bet by cutting out stacks of chips and you react by looking more and more uncomfortable at the chips keep coming you really have to work on yourself. a poker player shouldn't be reacting to things like that.

I found dealing and playing at the same time at the casino a big help. when dealing you have to look at the person who is next to act. if they're facing your bet, genuine or not you have to still look them in the eye and answer questions about the size of the pot / bet / etc. if I'm holding a monster or am at it (happens sometimes believe it or not) then I think I give very little away because of this experience. you can't really deal with shades on.

some people seem to play poker as an adrenalin sport. emotions running high, banging tables shouting and swearing. If poker players learned to control their emotions there'd be less of that but probably also less sunglasses.

worn them once at bb3 when i had a terrible headache and the lights were making it worse. I always have them with me but never usually wear them.

and of course you have to wear them at the home game with the lads and look as menacing as possible.

I have no problem with people wearing them or not.

I wear them most of the time, same reason as Red, so I can watch people without them knowing I am watching them. Great way to pick up on tells.

Classic is oing to push all your chips in, but watch the facial expression (without them knowing) to see if they want you to push or not. Be carefull though, I have done this successfully , but did once push the chips too far before I stopped and they had crossed the line! DOH!

It is amazing how people react to certain situations, when they "think" no one is watching

What about MP3 players?

even worse I think. there's so much information floating about you miss if you can't hear. also, you don't want to be altering your demeanor when you get a big hand. early tips I read in books advised not to change the way you sit or handle your chips. noone alters more than an MP3 listener with A,A.
Worst I ever saw was in the 200 F/O at Notts once. a guy sat for 45 mins and folded EVERY hand. then UTG he sat upright, took his headphones out and raised 5xBB. everyone laughed outloud and 9 people almost passed at the same time. he put his headphones back in and gave up the SB and BB he's just won in the next two hands. hilarious.

If you want to sit and not make eye contact with anyone and not listen to or talk with other people, play online at home. The reason I htink I've never done cosistantly well online is because I rely quite heavily on visual and aural cues. To intentionally disadvatage yourself just to eliviate the boredom baffles me.

each to their own I guess. I'm not going to tell people they can't listen to MP3s but when they ask " who raised?" or "is it me?" or put a call in when the pot's been raised ... ;grr;

I'm one of those people who get hooked on silly things like if I'm running good I'll wear the same baseball cap because it suddenly becomes "my lucky hat" and likewise (and much more often) if i'm running bad I ditch the old hat and try something new. The point is (I'm getting there honest!) last year in vegas after a couple of bad days i decided the new look would be a newly acquired hat and my shades, which I always take to poker tournies but never wear. It is a personal choice and i dont care who chooses to wear them, but my experience was that it made general observation much more difficult - everything was so dark lol! I'm not saying i wont wear them again but it didn't work for me - my eyes are really bad anyway so i was really struggling to see the cards on the flop - i think it must have been obvious when i was on a flush draw as I'd stand up and lean over the table to see the cards - needless to say they soon became my unlucky glasses so in future i'll stick to my prescription ones!

One of the things i love about poker is the great mix of characters - when you sit down at the start of a tourney and have a look around i dont think you'd see such a mix of people anywhere else, but it's great fun isn't it.

I think it's ok to wear sunglasses at the poker table, I don't wear them myself but if I'm in a pot with someone wearing them I'm automatically scared of them because I don't know where they're looking and stuff. The first time I felt like that was the night before BB2 at Cincinnatis and I was in a pot with monkey boy and I was intimidated by his shades!

I'd wear a full face mask if I could... my poker face is terrible, I always end up giggling :P

i think listening to the ipod allows me to concentrate better on the players actions when i am out of the hand. If i have the headphones in then i don't get involved in any conversations that distract my attention from the action.
It also keeps me out of those stupid confrontations with people who give it the 'next time you raise my big blind i'm all in, i don't give a f***' etc etc which just incites me to raise their BB next time anyway. I have one bloke who has said this to me a stupid amount of times and not once has he gone all in the next time but i see so many beginners or weak of will players who just refuse to raise his blinds because hes quite itimidating.

The older fellas also love a bit of speech play and it winds them up when they think i can't hear them.

but it's the conversation that give you information. you're taking away a big part of the deduction process by not listening.

As with sunglasses, I'm not going to ask people not to use them. if people want to handicap themselves,  ;sexybanana;

A while back I was amongst a group of poker players and came out with the following statement

"There are only two kinds of people who wear sunglasses indoors....blind people and c****"

One of the group of people I was with then piped up

"and poker players"

There was a deafening silence.

Mr Colclough ALWAYS wears an i-Pod. He believes my lisetning to music, it cuts out all the "crap" he would otherwise hear, & enables him to focus better.

There's no right or wrong to these things, it's each to their own.
