Title: New Opportunity Post by: Poppet7 on December 26, 2006, 11:06:03 PM So, I'm single, not in education at the moment, haven't got children or any other responsibilities, so I have decided to look into a seasonal job abroad. I think it'll be good for me to have a change of scenery, meet new people, and have fun...it's just I don't know where to start and was hoping someone might have some advice for me.
I'm not that fussy about where I go but I'd like it to be warm and holiday-like, maybe even working on a cruise ship. My friend has always wanted to do it so she said she would like to as well and our first choice is Florida but would be equally as happy in somewhere like Spain/Canary Islands/Balearic Islands etc. If anyone has any advice on where to start I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance :) Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Royal Flush on December 26, 2006, 11:28:36 PM So, I'm single, not in education at the moment, haven't got children or any other responsibilities, so I have decided to look into a seasonal job abroad. Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: kinboshi on December 27, 2006, 12:01:46 AM Don't look for sunshine - if you've got a degree (don't know if you have or not), but if you have any degree (which is all you need to get a job there to teach English), go and spend some time in Japan. It's an excellent country to live in. I'd definitely recommend it.
Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Poppet7 on December 27, 2006, 12:08:24 AM No, haven't got a degree, I put that off for a while, was supposed to be in my first year by now. Only educated to A levels unfortunately.
Possibly somewhere where the language is english, but spanish/french is easy enough to deal with. Only educated to A levels unfortunately. Possibly somewhere where the language is english, but spanish/french is easy enough to deal with. That's a shame, as it's an easy country to live in with English as your only language. If you get a chance to go to Uni, I'd highly recommend it. 3 or 4 years (or more if you pick the right course!) of easy tax-evading living. Most of my best, long-term friends I met at Uni, and although I could probably have earnt more by now if I hadn't gone to Uni, I certainly don't regret it. I had a ball there - and that was before online poker, which would have made it perfect! Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Sark79 on December 27, 2006, 12:25:38 AM Teaching english overseas looks great. I am definately going to do it at some point in the future. I know raab is in Indonesia just now or perhaps it is somewhere else now
This is a good site. Look at the forum part of the site, I know some teachers don't have degrees and they are able to teach. http://www.eslcafe.com/ Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: kinboshi on December 27, 2006, 12:39:38 AM If anyone is interested in teaching in Japan, the JET Programme is the best way to get out there. Lots of your expenses are paid for, accommodation is sorted, and they look after you very well.
All you need to qualify is a degree, and to get through their application process. They also have a similar programme for China and South Korea I believe. I went out on the JET Programme, and because I studied Japanese at Uni, my role was slightly different and I was working in an International Relations office and doing all sorts of stuff. But the majority of people on the programmme know no Japanese when they first go out there, and help to teach English alongside a native Japanese teacher. Funny thing is, I don't know what the law is with regards to online poker, but I would have thought the Japanese would have loved it. I can only assume that it's in some way illegal, otherwise I'm sure they would be a major force. As they might be in the future (along with the Koreans). The East Asians will be the new Scandies. Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Wardonkey on December 27, 2006, 12:39:58 AM Australia/NZ. No language problems. Work is easy to get. It's great fun. Good weather.
Pack your bags, don't come back for at least a year! Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Sark79 on December 27, 2006, 12:43:35 AM It would be cool to study Japanese. I was accepted onto an Arabic course for Uni, but in the end did geography and history. Big mistake, I ended up dropping out after 2nd year :D

Pack your bags, don't come back for at least a year! My mate did that 15 years ago. He's still over there!! Just don't mention the cricket (although we're doing OK at the moment...). I was accepted onto an Arabic course for Uni, but in the end did geography and history. Big mistake, I ended up dropping out after 2nd year :D Japanese was good fun, but bloody hard work. Did a Dual Honours degree - Business and Japanese Studies. Spent 30 hours a week doing Japanese, and less than 10 on the Business Studies. Although, if online poker had been around at the time, I think I would have spent far more time playing poker than studying! Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Sark79 on December 27, 2006, 12:48:19 AM Did you end up using the Japanese skills for your current job?
Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: kinboshi on December 27, 2006, 01:08:03 AM Did you end up using the Japanese skills for your current job? No! Had some job offers that would have used my Japanese, but went for 'better' opportunities. I work with online marketing now, and it's something I really enjoy. Maybe down the line a bit there'll be a role that means I can combine both this and my Japanese. Oh, and poker.... Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Div on December 27, 2006, 10:32:10 AM try:

Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Indestructable on December 27, 2006, 11:12:22 PM A friend a few years back was a nanny in the states and it was nothing but trouble and the family were the biggest pain in the ;bumwiggle; going and wasn't recommended as an experience.
Only other advice is to have sufficient money behind you when going, may be a bit of a catch 22 situation. But being skint abroad is probably worse than being skint at home. Don't do farming though, it's well hard work. It's a great place to spend a year. It's so big too, just work some, travel some. Happy days. Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: FlyingPig on December 28, 2006, 01:09:44 AM Working on a cruise ship without a speciality trade its is dam hard work... non stop, up at all dodgy hours. The benfits are good though. Seeing the world and all that.
Austraila is good. Jobs are not as easy to come by as people say though. Canada is promising but stay away from the cold parts, shockingly cold in some places. Where my friend lives it wont get above freezing for about 2 months. Pick wisely, do your homework, or, you could stay here and keep us all smiling at your threads.... Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: redimp on December 28, 2006, 01:17:09 AM Hi Pops
I think you have to be 21 to work on a cruise ship but I may be wrong! I also had a Friend that went to America to nanny and ended up in a whole lot of trouble and hated it. Have you thought about being a holiday rep, A young lass I use to work with has done it for a few years now and loves it,she does Spain etc.. in the summer and the ski resorts in the winter. If your intrested let us know hun and I will see if I can get in contact with her for you. Take care now And keep smiling Shelly xxxxxxxx Title: Re: New Opportunity Post by: Poppet7 on December 28, 2006, 01:19:22 AM My friend is in charge and she has studied abroad and done some sort of camp america thing so she's more clued up than I am. We're going to go on holiday soon as well, get away from life for a bit!
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. Don't think I could do Australia though, so so so far away, I need to be able to get back easily for blonde bashes! My sister was also a nanny at this time, but she isn't called Louise either. It seems to be a good way to spend time in the states and get decent pay
